Today in History #1 -- Appomattox
In accordance with the substance of my letter to you of the 8th instant, I propose to receive the surrender of the army of Northern Virginia on the following terms, to wit: Rolls of all the officers and men to be made in duplicate, one copy to be given to an officer to be designated by me, the other to be retained by such officer or officers as you may designate. The officers to give their individual paroles not to take up arms against the government of the United States until properly exchanged; and each company or regimental commander to sign a like parole for the men of their commands. The arms, artillery, and public property to be parked and stacked, and turned over to the officers appointed by me to receive them. This will not embrace the side-arms of the officers nor their private horses or baggage. This done, each officer and man will be allowed to return to his home, not to be disturbed by United States authority so long as they observe their paroles and the laws in force where they may reside.

US flight cancelled after pilot's #%&! foul language
Northwest Airlines cancelled a flight set to leave from Las Vegas to Detroit after the captain cursed on a cell phone in a bathroom, then swore at one of the 180 passengers on the plane, officials said on Saturday. "He used what was described to me as rude language," Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said about Friday's incident on Northwest Flight 1190. "At some point during the boarding process, he left the cockpit, went into the front lavatory, locked the door and continued his conversation. "Passengers who were boarding the aircraft could hear his end of the conversation through the lavatory door." When the captain emerged from the bathroom, a passenger confronted him about his behaviour, reportedly prompting more cursing by the pilot of the B757 aircraft.

Local police questioned the captain, whose name was not released, and determined there was no cause to conduct a sobriety test, Gregor said. But Northwest cancelled the flight and flew the pilot back to his base in Detroit. The airline said it expected to get the last of the delayed passengers to their destinations by Sunday. "Northwest is conducting a review of the matter and has apologized to its customers for the inconvenience," the company said in a statement.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Frogs rain down on Serbia
Traffic came to a halt and locals fled inside after thousands of frogs fell from the sky onto a Serbian village. Residents in Odzaci told local daily Blic they thought the world was coming to an end.

Aleksandar Ciric said: "I saw all these small frogs just start raining down. There were thousands of them." Another villager, Caja Jovanovic, added: "This huge 'cloud' seemed to come out of nowhere and its shape and colour looked very strange.

"We were all wondering what it was when suddenly frogs started to fall from the sky. I thought maybe a plane carrying frogs had exploded in midair."

But climatology expert Slavisa Ignjatovic said there was a simple scientific explanation for the incident. He said: "A whirlwind has sucked up the frogs from a lake, the sea or some other body of water somewhere else and carried them along to Odzaci where they have fallen to the ground. It is a recognised scientific phenomenon."
Yeah, right. Are you sure the stake through Milo's heart is still in place?

Arabia
83,000 homeless children roam Saudi streets - study
Riyadh: Around 83,000 homeless children are roaming the streets of Saudi Arabia, according to a recently released study. The children are believed to have been brought from neighbouring countries to work as camel jockeys and later were used for selling low-priced goods, according to Dr Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Yousuf, associate professor of sociology at the Riyadh-based Imam Mohammad Bin Saud Islamic University.

The researcher pointed out, in the study published in Riyadh, that some of others enter the kingdom illegally and most of them can be seen begging near traffic lights. In 2005, the Yemeni Ministry of Social Affairs acknowledged that around 300 children were crossing the border every month.

Contrary to what is reported in the daily press, the study noted that 69 per cent of street children in Riyadh are Saudis while 56.6 per cent of them are females. Around 88 per cent mothers of begging children are illiterate while nine per cent have only primary education.

The results corroborated an earlier survey conducted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). An ILO study reported in 2002 that the majority of child beggars in Saudi Arabia are citizens, many of them girls with disabilities. They often beg accompanied by their mothers.
Compassionate society they have there.
Study noted that 69 per cent of street children in Riyadh are Saudis, 56.6 per cent of them are females. Around 88 per cent of the mothers of begging children are illiterate while nine per cent have only finished primary schools. The study noted that 60 per cent of the children's fathers are married to another woman, while 50 per cent of fathers are unemployed.

The main factor behind the growing phenomenon are economic, social and family ones. Many street children said their families couldn't afford their education costs. The study noted that 60 per cent of the children's fathers are married to another woman, while 50 per cent of fathers are unemployed. Orphanage and domestic violence and abuse are among the factors for the increase of the phenomenon.

Dr Al Yousuf warned that young beggars were at risk of turning to crime if their plight was not addressed.

#3  This speaks volumes about what passes for priorities in Muslim societies. All their boasting about superior morals and stronger family ties are worth shit. The only thing that holds their families together are illiterate loving mothers who slave in isolation while under the constant fear of being divorced in an instant by some fickle husband. Some life! Screw Islam and its twisted culture. All that tremendous oil wealth sure doesn't reach very many of the people. We all know what trickles down on them.

Take four wives, urges Bahrain MP
An Islamist lawmaker has urged his male peers to take four wives, three Bahraini women and one foreigner, in order to help address the issue of the high number of spinsters in the country.

Shaikh Jasem Al Saidi, an independent with strong ties to the Salafis in the lower house, said that Bahraini men should not hesitate to wed more than one wife for the sake of the nation.

"We do not want to have spinsters in the country and we do not want a rise in the divorce rate either. Taking more than one wife is the solution, and I advise that the members of the Council of Representatives should set the example," he said.

But his remarks, uttered in a light tone, drew compassionate opposition from the other 38 men who sit in the 40-member council.

"Please, just speak for yourself," the Islamist deputy was told by fellow member Hassan Al Dossari, while Latifa Al Gaood, the only woman in the lower council, preferred not to comment.

Al Saidi's suggestion came after the council could not agree on the merits of extending health privileges to foreign women married to Bahrainis.

#1  I'd recommend not sending your sons to jihad, yer Eminence, but that's just me.

Though I s'pose it's only coincidence that if you send 3/4 of the young bucks off to perpetual war, that would leave (carry the 9, divide by pi), roughly 3 extry lonely wimminz pining for each village elder.

Nah, couldn't be. I'm sure there's a mistake somewhere.

Olde Tyme Religion
Prophet's face blurred in French textbook
Headline exactly as posted by Expatica...Prophet, no sneer quotes.
A French publisher said Thursday it had blurred the face of the Prophet Mohammed in painting reproduced in a history textbook after teachers warned it could spark protests by Muslim students. The publisher Belin confirmed a report in the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, which said it had digitally masked the face of the prophet in a reproduction of a 13th-century miniature painting.

Charlie Hebdo, which was acquitted earlier this month on charges of insulting the Muslim religion for printing cartoons of the prophet, published the miniature in question in its latest issue. Belin defended its decision to blur the image in a letter to several teachers who wrote to it to contest the move. "After presenting our new schoolbook to your fellow history and geography teachers in a number of schools, several told us that such a presentation of the Prophet Mohammed would today be perceived as provocative..." the letter said. Belin denied it had been "under pressure to blur the image" but said the teachers had warned of "the difficulty of teaching calmly in very heterogeneous classes," in a clear reference to Muslim students.

A spokeswoman for the SNES teaching union, Alive Cardoso, attacked the decision saying it was "injustifiable to manipulate a source" and was "contrary to the work of a historian".

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Boozing kills 10 in Iran
Ten people have died after drinking homemade hooch in a holy city in Iran, where the consumption of all alcohol is banned, the Kayhan newspaper reported on Sunday. “On April 2, a large quantity of bootlegged alcohol was distributed in Qom,” Iran’s clerical capital and the home of many religious seminaries, south of Tehran, it said. “A number of the drinkers were hospitalised and according to the inhabitants of Qom, 10 people have died,” the ultra-conservative daily added.

It said that local officials had yet to confirm the death toll. It is not the first time that toxic moonshine has claimed lives in Iran, an Islamic country where the production and consumption of alcohol is generally strictly prohibited.

#2  I am the man, the very fat man,
That waters the workers' beer
I am the man, the very fat man,
That waters the workers' beer
And what do I care if it makes them ill,
If it makes them terribly queer
I've a car, a yacht, and an aeroplane,
And I waters the workers' beer

Now when I waters the workers' beer,
I puts in strychnine
Some methylated spirits,
And a can of kerosine
Ah, but such a brew so terribly strong,
It would make them terribly queer
So I reaches me hand for the watering-can
And I waters the workers' beer

Now a drop of good beer is good for a man
When he's tired, thirsty and hot
And I sometimes have a drop myself,
From a very special pot
For a strong and healthy working class
Is the thing that I most fear
So I reaches my hand for the watering-can
And I waters the workers' beer

Now ladies fair, beyond compare,
Be you maiden or wife
Spare a thought for such a man
Who leads such a lonely life
For the water rates are frightfully high,
And the meths is terribly dear
And there ain't the profit there used to be
In watering the workers' beer
