Angry Guard Opens Fire Outside Walter Reed
An armed security guard fired at least 10 shots at another guard during an argument outside a busy entrance to Walter Reed Army Medical Center early Wednesday, police said. No one was hurt.
Good thing his marksmanship matches his anger management skills.
"This was rush hour on a busy thoroughfare. There were cars and pedestrians in the line of fire," said police Cmdr. Hilton Burton. At least two parked cars across the street were hit. The guard who was fired upon ran to a nearby house to call police.
Retired in some haste, did he?
The other guard, Dwan Thigpen, 34, of Fort Washington, Md., was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday, police said. Police and jail officials did not know whether Thigpen had an attorney.
nor did they care.
A Walter Reed surveillance video of the shooting shows two civilians ducking to avoid the gunfire, Burton said.
Washingtonians know what to do when the lead flies.
It also shows the two security guards arguing, and a third guard trying to break up the altercation. "There is a brief struggle between the security guard and the suspect, where the third guard is apparently trying to stop the suspect from taking his gun out of his holster," Burton said. The video then shows the first guard pulling out the gun, a 9 mm Beretta, and chasing and firing at the victim, and the victim running
really fast
and trying to get out of the way, Burton said. Police were still reviewing the video, and there were no immediate plans to release it. The guards worked for Vance Federal Security Services, said Joe Gavaghan, a spokesman for the company, which contracts with Walter Reed. Vance is "cooperating with authorities investigating this incident," said Gavaghan, adding that the company could not provide additional details.

The hospital is the Army's premier center for treating injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
God, imagine what the wounded soldiers inside thought! Lock this fool in a cage and let children come by and poke him with sticks.

A tale of romance gone horribly wrong
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Police on Wednesday were investigating how a naked couple fell four stories from the roof of a downtown office building to their deaths.

The man and woman were found near the sidewalk by a passing cab driver around 5 a.m. Wednesday. One person was pronounced dead at scene and the other died a short time later at a local hospital.

Clothing was discovered on the roof, leading authorities to suspect the couple, in their early 20s, may have been having sex. Their identities were not released.

Texas crowd kills passenger riding in vehicle that struck child during Juneteenth celebration
AUSTIN, Texas — A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday. Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him, authorities said. The Austin Police Department identified the victim as David Rivas Morales, 40. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police spokeswoman Toni Chovonetz said she had no further information, including how many people were involved. The driver was able to get away and is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.
Under other circumstances, this would be called a "lynching."
Also, "Bangladesh."

#12  Please, gentlemen.

Juneteenth is a perfectly fine celebration of the arrival of the news that the enslaved population of the United States had been declared free by Abraham Lincoln.

I am sorry (and more than a little angry) that this man was killed by a mob, but that is no excuse to denigrate the observance of such an auspicious day.

#13  The southern tip of Texas was sort of forgotten by the North. After awhile it was along the lines of "who is occupying the tip?", "Oh, no! We forgot. Better go free those slaves."

So that made Juneteenth ..
A unique celebration that reminds one of bureaucratic failure too.

#14  Juneteenth is a perfectly fine celebration of the arrival of the news that the enslaved population of the United States had been declared free by Abraham Lincoln.

That is very true, however, it has increasingly become a day when a lot of Blacks use slavery as an excuse to commit violence. Juneteenth violence happens a LOT more than what you hear about in the media. As someone that lives in Texas and has seen the violence grow over the decades as a result of PC tolerance, I have about had my fill of scofflaw behavior excused on the basis of race. There is a backlash coming, and it will not be pretty.

I am sorry (and more than a little angry) that this man was killed by a mob, but that is no excuse to denigrate the observance of such an auspicious day.

Denigration? That's rich. The only parties denigrating this "auspicious" day, are the bad actors among the celebrants. Like spoiled children, any excuse to tear something up.

#15  So it's a big deal in Texas. Fine. Celebrate it in in Texas. Why are they having riots over it in Milwaukee and Syracuse? It's sad, embarrassing and wrong that a crowd killed a man. The perpetrators need to be brought to justice, and the man's family needs solace and comfort.

This whole thread is getting ugly, and we mods (and we've been talking this morning) don't like it. If the ugliness continues we're going to delete the whole post and all comments.

#20  pot shots at an entire race of people won't be tolerated.

Unless they are Arabs.

Seriously man, is this the first time you see pot shots at an "entire race of people" in this forum? Where have you been the last several years?

And why did you ever think you could have a forum that tolerated bigotry towards Arabs to the extent that it has, and not end up becoming a place where other sorts of racial bigotries also hang out to have the occasional smoke?

Welcome back, Aris. We don't take after all Arabs or all Muslims, just the ones who want to kill us. Which seem to be many. And persistent. You may not understand that, but most of us here do. The ones who don't hear from me and the other mods. AoS.

#23  Juneteenth 2007

In Milwaukee, crowds at the downtown festivities attacked cars. One driver was pulled from his vehicle and severely beaten before police arrived. A woman was also arrested during the festivities for assaulting a police officer.

In Syracuse, New York, several fights broke out amongst youths at the event and two people were stabbed. This lead to police shutting down the event early.

AUSTIN, Texas — A crowd attacked and killed a passenger in a vehicle that had struck and injured a child, police said Wednesday. Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night. The man who was killed had been trying to stop the group from attacking the vehicle's driver when the crowd turned on him...

The above are not opinions. They are major news events. Oh, and by the way Aris Katsaris, you need to distinguish between discussions of mobs of Arabs, Caucasions, etc., etc., vs mobs of criminals. At this time our biggest threat of criminal gangs wreaking havoc are out of the Middle East. So either as an Arab or as a Juneteenth African American organizer get your criminal element under control, or we will.

#26  I was following this thread this morning when N. Law, (probably not his/her real name) posted the redacted comment. It was quite benign, and no racial slurs were used.

I suspect that the "Pink" moderator bunched his shorts over the use of the Spanish word for black, and N. Law's comment regarding the lack of ethnic tolerance displayed by Americans of African ancestry. All in all, quite tame compared to some of the other stuff that is allowed to fly around here.

Then, when the moderator was called on their rather capricious moderating decision, a moderator applied that adorably childish picture of the black officer. Surprising, but not too much, as some of the moderators here display an astonishing lack of suitability for their role.

Just my opinion.

Disclaimer: I do not know N. Law.

First, it's salmon, not pink. Another moderator, Scooter, has pink.

Second, the Spanish word for black, used in the context it was used, was not a benign description of skin tone. Unless you've lived in a cave (Afghanistan?), you understand perfectly well where the conversation is going when someone throws up 'negro'. Rantburg is dedicated to illuminating the WoT, and this sort of rot is a serious distraction to us. We're not going to have it.

Third, the picture you refer to was not put up by a moderator.

Finally, if you don't like the moderators, no problem. There are plenty of web sites out there. That's the beauty of the Internet.

#28  I think for most of us, this is not a matter of 'race' or color. To me, there's one race, humans. Either you are one or you're not. Which it is depends on how you act. I wouldn't care what color skin the people who commit acts like these have, as long as they're punished. If you commit an act of evil, then you deserve punishment. There are no excuses for what they did.

"Sugar, they is black, and they is white... and then they is trash!"

#32  Quite a number of us here at Rantburg descend from the sub-Saharan region of the planet. (Not me, that I'm aware of, but a good many others.) It's not capriciousness or a sudden attack of PC-itis to refuse to insult our own. Nor is it ever inappropriate to demand good manners from the posters. Finally, the Rantburg moderators are demigods acting in accordance with the site-owner's will. You don't like it? Leave. Like so many things worth having, Rantburg is a privilege, not a right.

#33  And why did you ever think you could have a forum that tolerated bigotry towards Arabs to the extent that it has, and not end up becoming a place where other sorts of racial bigotries also hang out to have the occasional smoke?

Tsk tsk, Aris. You can't just waltz in here like this and talk sense. You'll make their heads explode!

Like so many things worth having, Rantburg is a privilege, not a right.

It's also out in the public domain. So if Rantburg says something stupid, it's fair game to pile on the scorn. Complaining about that, or reminding others that this is a privately-owned website is rather weak. Grow up.

Kashmir's Muslim clerics learn English to turn global
Steadfast to go global, Muslim clerics in Kashmir have enrolled themselves in a university to learn English. Over 36 clerics from mosques across the state have enrolled for an 'Intensive English Course' at the University of Science and Technology in Awantipora. The clerics have realised English is well on its way to becoming a dominant global language of communication, which could help them convey the message of their religion to others.

Mohammad Hanifuddin, a cleric-turned English student said that we are learning English to teach others about our faith. The full-time course for one year would equip the clerics with better language skills, which they hope would help them travel outside the country. "English is the easy way of communication. Arabic is only limited to a few countries including Saudi Arabia. When we go to some foreign country such as America or Europe, we won't be able to communicate in Arabic and would need English for the purpose. We also need English in southern India," said Tanveer-Ur-Rehman Vani, another cleric-turned-student.

Interestingly, most of their teachers are women, who found their senior students more receptive and serious about the academics. "It's difficult a bit, but then these all are intelligent - as they are Muftis and Moulvis. Their motivational and learning levels are quite high. They are doing quite fine and hopefully would do so in the future," said Syed Rubina, an English teacher, Islamic University of Science and Technology.

Besides helping them overcoming language barrier, the course would also open up avenues for higher education to the clerics.

Mods: Am I having cookie problems? My last post ("Charges filed over outsourced uniform flags") turned up unattributed and the "Hello ryuge" is gone from the top of my page too.

#2  Hey Mr Hanifuddin - I think the world has got a very, very good idea about what your 'religion' is all about. Even behind the veil (ho ho) of Arabic, we've got a clue what you have in store for all us 'unbelievers'. So to you I say, in perfect colloquial english - go shove your 'message' where the sun don't shine.

#1  Eh, so what. Got that already in Florida and Arizona. Hasn't killed anyone yet to go outside and puff away instead of forcing nonsmokers to breathe that noxious crap.

And yes, smokers brought it on themselves by not telling rude smokers (the kind with some bizarre idea that they have the constitutional right to light up anywhere and everywhere) to knock it off.

#3  Maybe this is too simplistic but here goes. Maybe, the owners of privately owned establishments could just put up a sign that says something like ‘This is a Smoking establishment.’ (Either partially or in its entirety) That way people could choose…yes choose…to enter the building either to patronize or for employment. Naahhh…to simple right? Not enough victimization in that method.

#4  I find it interesting that voluntary smoke free restaraunts and bars caved hard and fast.

Maybe a bar should put up a sign that says "smoking required" and have all the employees sign waivers. That's a commerce test I'd like to see....

#5  DepotGuy, you are spot-on.

We are about to have imposed on us (July 1st) mandatory non-smoking areas all over Britain. In public places, *and* in private places too. Pubs, clubs (public and private), restaurants, theatres and in a huge number of other places.

It is simply wrong to do this. People have the right to do with their lives what they wish. If a pub/club is a smoking establishment, I choose to go there or not.

Personally, I absolutely detest smoking - I lost both parents to smoking-related diseases and have never, ever smoked.

That is not the point. I should not have the state telling me what I can and cannot do with my own body.

Incentives work (tax breaks for fully non-smoking establishments), whereas forcibly telling people what they can and cannot do is morally repugnant.
