Business owner shoots, kills 2nd burglar in a month
Edited for brevity.
For the second time in one month, a business owner in west Dallas has shot and killed a burglary suspect. Dallas police believe James Walton was sleeping when his burglar alarm sounded late Saturday night. Police say he found two suspects at his business, Texas Allied Welding Supply. He shot and killed the first suspect, 37-year-old Jimmy Gannon.
Now simply referred to as the ex-Jimmy Gannon.
The second suspect was also shot, but was not seriously injured.
Back to the range, Mr. Walton!
According to investigators, the two suspects may have been looking for copper.
But the only metal they found was HOT LEAD!
Robert Brown, one of Walton's neighbors, said he's proud of the shooting. He said it brings "a sense of pride of your neighborhood, taking care of your own. I like it."

Last month, Walton shot and killed Raul Laureles after he tried to break into his business.
"We'd just gotten that stain out of the carpet, and then it happens again!"
"People have the right to defend their property and their own life," said Dallas Police Sergeant Andrew Harvey. "We'll refer to the grand jury and make sure they hear [the case]."
This sounds like a dream neighborhood--sensible cops who respect a man's right to defend his life and property and proud neighbors who appreciate someone making their neighborhood safer--why is this the exception instead of the norm?
Walton was questioned by police, but was not arrested.
I love a happy ending!

After then, he said about once a month, some creep enters the store, takes one look at the floor, then marches out again without a word.

Woman Jailed for 50 Days Over Cat Urine
A few days old.
Tampa, Fla. (AP) -- Cynthia Hunter spent almost two months in jail over a vial of cat urine. Hunter, 38, was arrested Aug. 15 on a charge of petty theft after she was accused of stealing from a Wal-Mart store.

Deputies added charges of possession of a controlled substance after finding a vial containing a yellow substance in her purse. A drug field test suggested the substance was methamphetamine, The Tampa Tribune reported.

Hunter had protested, saying the substance was dehydrated cat urine for her son's science project and that it had been purchased at an animal clinic. She was released Thursday after lab tests found the substance was, in fact, cat urine.

Hunter pleaded guilty to petty theft and a judge gave her time served. It was not clear if she had an attorney and why the substance might have tested positive for methamphetamine.
Don't ask her, ask the cat...

#5  Sorry SteveS,

But consider this: there are a lot more people walking around with methamphetamine in their purses then there are people carrying around dehydrated cat urine in theirs, my guess (Read: I am certain) is that not very many people have been caught up in police/drug shenanigans because of this type of overseight.

1. FARK recently commented on new "Wine" countries in Eastern Europe, remarking after tasting the wine that the only mystery was how they got the cat to sit on top of the bottle when it ...

2. Fast acting law enforcement officials here updated drug/alcohol tests to include characteristics of cat urine in their screening ...

3. Poor lady got a BETA version of the test.

It could happen ...

Boy, 12, bitten by hippopotamus
A 12-year-old boy was listed in moderate condition Sunday morning after being bitten by a hippopotamus at Ramat Gan's safari park. According to park officials, the boy got out of his car to be photographed next to the animal and was bitten three times. He was taken to Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer.
"Whoa! Doooood! Where'dja get that scar?"

#3  Crocodiles have enough brains to leave them alone for the most part, if that says anything. Fortunately for the crocs, the hippos are vegetarian.

I seem to remember a National Geographic or something from years ago that showed what a protective mother hippo going after a croc that tried to screw with her calf. The situation only took seconds to resolve and the guys shooting the film didn't bother to interview what was left of the croc after the incident.

Some of the hippo's teeth are most of a foot long and they seem to have double-jointed jaws.

If you ask me, hippos rank right up there on the intelligence curve and can be very compassionate. In fact, I can think of a couple of Congressional Senator positions for Massachusetts that would be better filled by hippos. They would vote correctly about half of the time, one of them would be more civilized about snacking during meetings and take up a lot less room, and both would be a lot quieter.

Riot police storm pub after a smoker lights up in protest to the ban
It wasn't exactly the dramatic finale one cricket fan was expecting.

Having installed himself in his local pub to watch England play India, John Vaughan was enraged when the channel was switched over to football just as the cricket was reaching its thrilling conclusion.
The only way a cricket match could have a thrilling conclusion would be if a Harrier picked that moment to make an emergency landing on the pitch.
So Mr Vaughan lit up a cigarette in protest. When he refused to extinguish it, staff pressed a panic button behind the bar. And a few minutes later six riot police officers wearing protective gear stormed the pub.
The control freak/busybody lobby is obviously trying to follow up the great success they have had in stamping out marijuana and alcohol over the last 150 years.
Mr Vaughan had been watching the one-day international at the Copper Pot pub in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, last month. The game was about to finish when the channel was switched to the England versus Israel Euro 2008 football qualifier.

Mr Vaughan said yesterday: "The cricket only had ten minutes left, but the football wasn't even going to start for another 45 minutes. "We complained but nothing happened. So I decided to light up out of protest. "Staff told me I couldn't smoke, but I said I'd had enough of being pushed around by the Government. "They pressed a panic button and the next thing I knew, there were six policemen in the pub and two outside."
He's lucky. American bars generally have either a) bouncers or b) owners with baseball bats.
No action was taken against demolition boss Mr Vaughan after he agreed to leave. There was a big cheer round the pub from about 60 people, added Mr Vaughan, "and even the police found it quite amusing."

Warwickshire Police confirmed officers had been sent to the pub on September 8 following reports of a man "smoking and being aggressive". A spokesman said: "They explained why he should not be smoking, asked him to leave and he did so happily
It is remarkable and ominous how a gang of neurotic control-freaks, the health activist industry, have turned a clinically diagnosed mental illness, the compulsion to control others, into a mass movement that they have then used to put themselves into power. I have an idea: get little American and Israeli flags printed in food color on your cigarette papers. That way, you can burn them anywhere and claim protected free speech. Yell "Allahu Akbar!" a few times and the bobbies won't dare mess with you.

#2  A one day cricket match lasts about 6 hours, plus lunch of course. If he had watched the whole thing in the pub, he would be well oiled.

Fred N, I gather you are not a cricket fan. If you ever get a chance to watch a game on Australian TV do so, if only for the interesting technology they use in the broadcasts. Cricket is streets ahead of any other sport in this respect.

Europe
Georgia considers a return to monarchy
The Georgian Parliament is to discuss the possibility of restoring the monarchy in the country. The idea was floated by the Head of the Georgian Orthodox Church and has been warmly greeted by opposition parties.

With no end in sight to Georgia's political turmoil, the country's top religious religious leader has proposed a radical solution - bringing back the country's royal family. Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, says putting the Bagrationi family back on the throne could end the nation's political woes. “This is not a matter to be decided by others. It is we who should decide this. The Georgian people and the people living in Georgia have to decide this. You know that the rule of the Bagrationi Dynasty was terminated in 1801, and since then Georgian people have nurtured a dream to restore the ancient, divinely blessed dynasty,” he said.

The Bagrationi Dynasty is the longest serving royal house in Europe. They ruled Georgia in one form or another for over a thousand years, until Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire and the monarchy was abolished.
Seem to have survived better than the Romanoffs.
Today, the main branches of the family live in Spain and Italy, but they remain popular in Georgia. And after the Patriarch’s statement, they could be coming home at last.

The idea has been greeted with jubiliation by the Georgian opposition - newly united following the arrest last month of former Defence Minister Irakli Okruashvili on corruption charges. That was just two days after making a series of scandalous allegations against President Mikhail Saakashvili. Earlier this week, the former minister was released on $US 6 million bail after repudiating his allegations against the President.

The opposition say they will nonetheless continue their protests against the Government, and one of their main demands is a reduction in the powers of the President. For the opposition, the Patriarch’s statement seems like a blessing.

"I'm for a parliamentary republic. I'm also for the possibility of restoring the constitutional monarchy here. A constitutional monarchy is also a kind of a parliamentary republic and this was the principle idea of our Patriarch,” says Freedom Party leader Koka Gamsakhurdia.

The Patriarch’s is thinking long-term. His idea is to groom someone from the Bagrationi clan from childhood. This means the opposition are unlikely to get their king or queen any time soon. For its part, the Government isn’t ruling out the idea for the future.

Mikhail Machavariani Deputy Speaker of the Georgian parliament thinks, “At this stage it is not possible for Georgia to become a constitutional monarchy”. “If we, Georgians, make this decision, a monarch must be raised from childhood,” he added.

Ordinary Georgians also seem prepared to at least consider restoring the monarchy after more than 200 years. “The idea of having a constitutional monarchy is of course lovely, but I’m afraid it’s absolutely unrealistic,” one of the citizens says.

Another local believes, “The restoration of the monarchy will happen in the future, it will be the best path to follow for the next generation.”

The Patriarch’s idea is an appeal to Georgians' sense of history and unity at a time when the county is gripped by a political crisis. And because Georgians respect the Patriarch, the idea is likely to be taken seriously.

The idea of bringing back Georgia's royal family will get its first test in parliament shortly, when MPs discuss the proposal.

Senator "The Surge is a Failure" Reid's Poll numbers are plummeting
Molly Ball of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Senator Harry Reid's favorable rating in Nevada has "plunged dramatically," according to a new poll. Currently, Reid's favorable rating is at 32%, while his unfavorable rating is at 51%, a net 23-point drop from the last poll taken in early May when Reid scored a 46/42 favorable/unfavorable rating.

Ball reports this is the first time Reid's unfavorable rating has eclipsed his favorable rating. It also puts him below the favorable ratings recorded by President Bush and radio host Rush Limbaugh, among others:

Senator John Ensign 51/19
Bill Clinton 51/37
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman 42/17
Hillary Clinton 38/51
Rush Limbaugh 34/50
President Bush 34/53
Senator Harry Reid 32/51
Governor Jim Gibbons 30/29

Pollster Brad Coker of Mason-Dixon offered a wry observation of Reid and Limbaugh's similar ratings: "That's how polarizing Harry Reid has become. But Rush is trying to be polarizing. Reid just does it anyway."
I wondered about this in a comment last week - sure enough the Las Vegas Newspaper comes through with my answer

#8  Resemblance? not really. Except in the level of danger they present.

Reid is just plain wrong, and he is blind to his and his party's folly. They and their adherents are aiding and abetting the enemy publicly with their statements, and too many sheep agree with them.

Quisling had a few parades and speeches, but few people took him seriously. Nobody in Norway had elected him to any public position. He went to Hitler and told him he had an army of Nazi sympathizers in Norway ready to do his bidding. Hitler bought it.

When Quisling marched into the Norwegian Radio office at the outset of the German attack, the radio announcer barely recognized him. When he saw Quisling's demands, he had an inspiration: "Major, why don't you read your message to the people of Norway yourself?" There was therefore no doubt in any Norwegian's mind who betrayed them.

When Gen. Falkenhorst took Norway, it took him just a few minutes to realize that Quisling was a fool and a liar. So he let Quisling be the figurehead; let him have his parades and press conferences and his ego trip, while ignoring Quisling in any kind of policy making.

Reid is no figurehead. He has been given a position of leadership that he has not the character or wisdom to handle.

GW student leaders call for tolerance
The word describing their wishes is not "tolerance".
Both Jena Six and last week's controversial poster campaign have caused some students to call for increased awareness and action against racism and religious intolerance at GW and colleges nationwide.

University President Steven Knapp recognized the poster's content as satirical, he said in a blast e-mail Friday, but also said the posters "do not represent the attitudes of our student body. Our campus has come together in deploring expressions of hatred and reaffirming our principles of civility and mutual respect," Knapp said.

Students convened Wednesday night at a Student Association town hall and panel discussion. The SA initially planned for the forum's theme to be "What has Jena taught us?" but changed the theme to "Tolerance on our campus and in our society" in light of last week's poster controversy. "We have slipped on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to tolerance and dignity," said Michael Tapscott, director of the Multicultural Student Services Center.

At the forum, students discussed Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. Some who spoke were appalled that the University would allow the event to take place. Senior Shannon Holmes, a member of the Black Student Union, encouraged students to protest the week through a letter-writing campaign. "Why are we tolerating such events?" Holmes asked. "Why are we letting speakers like (conservative author David) Horowitz come to our campus?"

SA Executive Vice President Brand Kroeger encouraged students to attend the events, and if Horowitz said something hateful or racist, to challenge him on his statements. Kroeger, a junior, also noted that while Horowitz spoke at last year's awareness week as well, few students mentioned it.

At the forum, students also discussed defining hate speech and instituting policies against hate speech on campus. Tim Miller, the executive director of the Student Activities Center, said students should be able to express their opinions as long as it is done in a "civil and instructive manner," which the fliers did not do, he said.

While most of the discussion centered on the poster incident, American studies professor Suleiman Osman warned against keeping the dialogue limited to one event. "Focusing on incidents does not give a sense of larger structural issues and problems of racial inequality," he said.
"Remember the Narrative. Facts are so illusory."
The BSU and the GW chapter of the NAACP are beginning to put this idea into practice, compiling testimonies of racism on campus. These groups said they want to increase their presence at GW and raise awareness of all racist incidents on campus, including a roommate's racist remark or a professor's ignorant comment. "We clearly see that there are racist sentiments within the University," said Whitney McGuire, president of the GW chapter of NAACP. "In this educational institution, we expect a certain level of openness."

They are also looking to reach out to other colleges where racial incidents have occurred, such as the hanging of nooses at the University of Maryland and Columbia University. "We are committed to spreading awareness and contributing money, bodies, time and other resources to support initiatives that seek to combat these insanities," said senior Charles Basden, president of the BSU, referring to the racial incidents that have happened on colleges around the country.

Tapscott said the MSSC is collecting testimonies documenting both positive and negative racial experiences on the GW campus.

#1  University President Steven Knapp recognized the poster's content as satirical...

Did he clearly make that point up front when he first commented upon it? Or after the threat and discovery that it wasn't conservatives? Remember being 'conservative' is a hate crime on campuses across America. You're guilty till proven innocent in a court of law. Ask the Duke Lacrosse team.
