The best-known goat in Sudan has died months after being 'married' to a man in the South Sudan cap.
Local elders ordered a man found having sex with the goat, later called Rose, to 'marry' her last February. 'The idea was to publicly embarrass the man,' says Tom Rhodes, editor of the Juba Post, which first ran the story.
The BBC's story of the 'wedding' caught the public imagination and became one of the most read internet stories.
Rose, black and white, is believed to have died after choking on a plastic bag she swallowed as she was eating scraps on the streets of Juba. The 'husband', Charles Tombe, said he was drunk at the time but has since refused to comment on the issue.
CLARENDON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A school district employee faces lynching charges, and authorities say the victims were a group of teenagers.
It was another quiet day in downtown manning until a mob scene broke out in the Dollar General parking lot. 'I heard the woman say they're fighting, they're fighting,' says Tonya, an employee at the Dollar General. 'I seen a little girl getting beat up, her weave being pulled out by a grown woman.'
A young girl was losing the fight to a woman nearly 30 years older. And Dana Hawkins wasn't holding back. Authorities say she even had help from another woman, 37-year-old Carol Smiling. 'The adults were holding down one or two of the juvenile victims, while the other juveniles were attacking them,' says Manning Police Sgt. Homes Smith.
Authorities say Hawkins' daughter jumped in along with another girl, and helped Hawkins and Smiling beat up three teenaged girls.
But why? it isn't clear to the Dollar General worker who saw it all unfold. 'What was going through my mind is that's a damn shame,' Tonya says, 'because a grown woman got no business in a child's mess.'
One of the victims tells us they were targeted because she'd recently broken up with Hawkins' son.
The mess sent Smiling, Hawkins, her daughter and friend to jail. They all face lynching charges in the mob-style beating of the young girls.
What authorities say is even more perplexing, is that Hawkins works as a benefits and payroll administrator with Clarendon County School District One. 'We have adults in altercations with adults all the time. But when you have adults in altercations with juveniles, someone has to have a cooler head,' says Sgt. Smith.
We called Hawkins at her home Wednesday, and were told she had no comment.
The superintendent of Clarendon County Schools tells us Hawkins is innocent until proven guilty. She still has her job, and the support of the district. It is a gross abuse of language to call this 'lynching' but that is apparently how the law reads in SC.
Police reports show that three men arrested in a Phoenix home invasion and homicide Monday may have been active members of the Mexican Army. While on the J.D. Hayworth show, Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Mark Spencer said that the men involved were hired by drug cartels to perform home invasions and assassinations.
The Monday morning incident at 8329 W. Cypress St. resulted in the death of the homeowner. Between 50 and 100 rounds were fired at the house.
Spencer said a police officer told him that one of the men captured said they were completely prepared to ambush Phoenix police, but ran out of ammunition. He added that all were all dressed in military tactical gear and were armed with AR-15 assault rifles. Three other men involved in the invasion escaped.
However, Phoenix Police have not confirmed the men were Mexican Army members. Sgt. Joel Tranter said one suspect revealed that he had 'prior military training,' but 'no credible evidence' that any of them were active in the military. Redacted police documents on site. The local, State and federal government are trying desperately to hush up this incident.

All the gear except the weapons could be bought through the cheaper than dirt catalogue and their presence is meaningless. Bragging that they were prepared to ambush the police or that they had military training should is easy enough to investigate but is more than likely bravado.
You have to wonder why so few bullets if that's the case. I can pop off 100 rounds at the range pretty damn quick with a revolver, I think it would take seconds with an AR-15. If they had military training they were ineptly prepared.
They should be tried as murderers and any connections to drugs and/or Mexican military should be exploited. But when it all settles they are just punks that saw HEAT as far as I can tell.

To put this in context, in West Phoenix there is a large desert area used as a dumping ground in drug killings.
Almost exclusively Mexican, the local papers refused to associate all the killings, put them as individual stories in the truss ads, and just stopped reporting them when the count was over 40 bodies.
By now, perhaps 80 or more bodies have been recovered there in the last 10 years.

This is the problem I have with McCain, folks. Sorry. I know Iraq is important and I know all too well that Obama will be far worse. But I expect better from Republicans and until I get it I refuse to vote at all. Maybe some day they'll figure it out or maybe they just don't care about little old me. I live an hour's drive from the border and uncomfortably close to Interstate 5. These people drive with impunity up and down I5 every day. The only comfort I can take is they're not interested in me. But their product is readily available all over SoCal. I don't want to hear any crap about how the government is doing all that can be done about it. Apart from a cosmetic bust every now and then just for show there is absolutely nothing being done. McCain won't even talk about it. I know, Obama won't either. But that's not good enough anymore. I want something done. HEY, SENATOR! IT'S THE BORDER, STUPID!

Abu Uluque, you have to ask yourself if Obama would be better on the border. Imperfect as he is I think I trust McCain on border security more, simply because he understands the war on terror even if he doesn't understand the other border issues.

The Hoover Administration looked at building a canal from San Diego area right across the states on the boarder with Mex coming out in the Gulf of Mexico a natural barrier. Make it wider than Panama so ship size is not as limited. Great public works project and would bring up land values in some pretty dry areas. Cost of shipping goes down etc.

This became an issue for the various states several years ago, when it became clear neither Congress nor the President were going to tighten down the border. The states have begun handling things. Local police have been trained and deputized as ICE enforcers, ICE has been cleaning out prisons and work places at a steadily increasing pace, and localities and states have passed laws making illegal aliens, well, illegal. Basic fencing is less expensive than dealing with this kind of thing -- so let the states get on with putting barriers in place along the border, and let the Federal government catch up later.

Reminder: Mexico deports thousands of illegals from Central America, each year. I have personally witnessed one crop of deportations at the border with Guatemala.

An Australian bridegroom was horrified to learn after he had walked down the aisle that he was already married after a drunken holiday romance he could barely remember.
The husband has had to confess in the Family Court that he spent 28 days partying and drinking in Arizona in 1978 on leave from his job as a cook on the oil rigs. He can remember the 'nice' blonde American woman he met through a pen pal newspaper advertisement but little more. 'He has no recollection of going through any form of ceremony of marriage with her, or of discussing marriage, or of anything referable to marriage,' said Justice Sally Brown, who annulled the marriage last month.
Not only that, but the man, who describes himself as an old-fashioned romantic, was already married at the time to his wife of 14 years. Yesterday the 67-year-old, who cannot be identified, told The Daily Telegraph 'the sky fell in' when he was shown the Arizona marriage license. 'I looked at the signature and thought it could have been mine or it could not have been,' he said.
The man had since divorced his 1966 wife. It was when he married his Hawaiian girlfriend in 2006 and applied to live in Hawaii with her that U.S. immigration authorities broke the bad news. He said his latest wife, who has become his girlfriend again because their marriage was declared invalid, was very understanding.

Thanks to some text message-savvy grandchildren, North Carolina drivers whose license plates have the potentially offensive "WTF" letter combination can replace the tags for free.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday the state Division of Motor Vehicles has notified nearly 10,000 holders of license plates with the letter combination. Officials learned last year the common acronym stands for a vulgar phrase in e-mail and cell phone text messages.
The DMV recently realized the same letters appeared on the sample license plate on its own Web site. Officials are trying to remove the plate from the site.
"I can't believe it," DMV Commissioner Bill Gore told the newspaper on Monday when alerted to the situation. "Obviously, I didn't know it was there."
DMV officials got word of the plates last July when a 60-year-old technology teacher from Fayetteville complained about the plate after her teenage grandchildren clued her in.

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) A cyclist in Boulder County was injured after a run-in, literally, with a bear. Tim Egan, 53, was riding on Old Stage Road Tuesday afternoon when suddenly a bear appeared in front of him. Egan hit the bear and ended up skidding across the road.
'This bear looked at me with a look of terror on his face and sort of made a noise,' said Egan. 'I looked at him with a look of terror and we went, 'aaaahhhhh.''
He cracked some ribs, suffered cuts on his head and had road rash. Egan said he and the bike flipped and flew over the bear, hitting the pavement hard. News Video at the link

From the Department of Damned-With-Faint-Praise, a group going by the regal-sounding name of the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is planning to ask voters here to change the name of a prize-winning water-treatment plant on the shoreline to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.
The plan - hatched, naturally, in a bar - would place a vote on the November ballot to provide 'an appropriate honor for a truly unique president.'
Supporters say that they have plenty of signatures to qualify the initiative and that the renaming would fit in a long and proud American tradition of poking political figures in the eye.
'Most politicians tend to be narcissistic and egomaniacs,' said Brian McConnell, an organizer who regularly suits up as Uncle Sam to solicit signatures. 'So it is important for satirists to help define their history rather than letting them define their own history.'
Not surprisingly, those Republicans in a city that voted 83 percent Democratic in 2004 are not thrilled with the idea. Howard Epstein, chairman of the ever-outnumbered San Francisco Republican Party, called the initiative 'an abuse of process.'
'You got a bunch of guys drunk who came up with an idea,' Epstein said, 'and want to put on the ballot as a big joke without regard to the city's governance or cost.'
The renaming would take effect on Jan. 20, when a new president is sworn in. And regardless of the measure's outcome, supporters plan to commemorate the inaugural with a 'synchronized flush' of hundreds of thousands of toilets that would send a flood of water toward the plant, now named the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant.
'It's a way of doing something physical that's mentally freeing,' said Stacey Reineccius, 45, a supporter of the plan. 'It's a weird thing, but it's true.'

That's is a great idea. Let's take it on step further. Many know the term "take a crap" came from the name on British toilets produced by Thomas Crapper.
I also will name my toilets San Francisco (40 minutes to my west) and henceforth when I have a BM it will be called "taking a San Francisco".
Even better I will call it "taking a Frisco". The term "Frisco" drives them nuts by it's self, so this way you can double my pleasure.
I can now leave a symbol of my disdain for San Franfreakshow anywhere in the world. I can hear Tony Bennett now; "I left my Frisco, in San Francisco".

A working sewer system is a mark of civilization.
They think it is some sort of insult when in fact the only way it could be is if the sewer system quit working - in which case it may be worth it just to watch "Physicle and Mentally freeing" working people haul their filth to a designated drop point, bucket by bucket.
An argument on I-10 between a Tallahassee woman and a Fort Lauderdale man led to the woman being seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when she jumped out of the car when the driver refused to stop on the interstate, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
' I jumped out of his car. It was my fault, Marquita Cherrell Armstrong, was quoted by troopers as saying at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Armstrong, 24, was a passenger in a car driven by Jeffery Dawayne Watson, 27, of Fort Lauderdale, when the two begin to argue Tuesday afternoon, according to the FHP. When Watson missed the Monroe Street exit, Armstrong told him to stop the car and let her out, but he refused to stop in the construction zone. He told her that he would continue to Thomasville Road and let her out there.
Armstrong then opened the door as Watson slowed down and then she jumped out, striking the pavement. Watson and another motorists stopped to treat her and called 911.

When cowboys hit the road 50 years ago in search of the next big payday at rodeos, they did so in pickups and small horse trailers for small purses.
Today, winning cowboys can afford a few luxuries, with first-place prize money reaching more than $10,000. Diesel trucks that cost $25,000 and $30,000 horse trailers are fixtures in rodeo parking lots.
But bigger is not necessarily better. First it was a proposed ban on plastic bags. Now, a member of the influential Madison Plan Commission wants to ban the restaurant drive-through -- or at least restrict the ubiquitous symbol of America's auto-centric lifestyle.
'Given the concern about all the carbon going into the atmosphere, I'm not sure we should be building more places for people to sit idling in their cars,' says Eric Sundquist, who was appointed to the citizen panel by Mayor Dave Cieslewicz this spring.
A former newspaper reporter in Atlanta now working as a researcher at the UW-Madison's Center on Wisconsin Strategy, Sundquist notes that several cities in Canada have recently moved to ban the drive-through coffee shop or stand-alone fast food restaurant 'Bans haven't gotten as far in the U.S., although I know San Luis Obispo, Calif., has one,' he says.
Officials are 'shocked and appalled' that a Mexican judge has released a man imprisoned in connection with the death of a Yuma-based U.S. Border Patrol agent, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Wednesday.
Jesus Navarro Montes, arrested Jan. 22 in Mexico, was recently released from a Mexicali prison. Navarro had been sought in Mexico for allegedly smuggling migrants. Navarro Montes is a suspect in the Jan. 19 murder of Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar.
It could not be determined immediately what charges Navarro Montes faced, what charges Mexican authorities presented to the judge in seeking to hold him, whether Navarro Montes had petitioned for bail nor the circumstances of his release.

Spain doesn't have any native apes or monkeys. Gibraltar claimed by Spain has Barbary Apes, a species of monkey. And like all all monkeys in my personal experience, including Gibraltar's apes, they are nasty, vicious and extremely dangerous animals.
If you want to deal with monkeys, I recommend at least one of the following - mace, cattle prod, handgun.

Not what I'd call outrageous. They are at least as intelligent as many of our own congress critters. At the rate we're going there won't be an ape anywhere on the planet in a few years. It's a desperate situation that generates questionable legislature like this, but at least somebody is doing something instead of just sitting around with their thumb up their ass.
A judge in Marion County on Wednesday denied an attempt by the sponsors of two citizen initiatives to lift a state-imposed ban on gathering of voter signatures for the initiatives.
Darryl L. Larson, a retired Lane County judge who was temporarily assigned to the case, refused to grant a temporary restraining order against the state Elections Division, which imposed the signature gathering ban.
The two initiatives target trial lawyers, key allies of the Democratic Party. One would limit the amount of contingency fees lawyers could collect in civil cases. The other would require courts to sanction lawyers who file "frivolous" legal claims.
The Elections Division imposed the ban on several initiatives until their sponsors comply with a new state record keeping law. Initiative sponsors have until July 3 to submit voter signatures to qualify for the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
The sponsors of the two initiatives are also seeking to overturn the ban in U.S. District court in Eugene, where they have challenged the constitutionality of the new state law.

Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice MA Zafar directed the inspector general (IG) on Wednesday to ensure that the police did not harm a girl who married on her own will and was in the Darul Amaan.
MA Zafar issued the directions on the petition of Muhammad Hanif who was seeking the recovery of his daughter in law Hina from the illegal custody of her family. The judge on June 18, had sent Hina to the Darul Amaan after recovering her from her family.
Muhammad Hanif had filed a petition, which said that his son Sheraz had married Hina with her free will, two years ago. He said that they were leading a happy life and his son had gone abroad. He added that Hinas parents persuaded her to come to their house to see her family members, and later detained her.
The judge issued protection orders for the petitioner Hanif and Hina when Hanif informed the court that after the last hearing, the police had beaten him up. He alleged that a deputy inspector general (DIG) was supporting the accused party and had registered fake cases in various police stations against him and his son. Hanif alleged that the police were not letting him enter his house and had also robbed it. He added that his life and property should be protected. He also said that the police squad positioned outside the Darul Amaan were harassing his daughter-in-law.
The judge, however, allowed the father, mother and brothers of the girl to see her in the Darul Amaan every Wednesday from 10:30am to 11am in the presence of the Darul Amaan superintendent. The judge told the superintendent not to let anyone give Hina food. The judge adjourned the hearing till July 7. On the last hearing, Hina had appeared before the court and had said that no one had forced her to marry and that she had married Sheraz on her free will.

The Washington state Supreme Court says workers who leave their jobs on a voluntary basis can still seek unemployment benefits.
Whether they get those benefits depends on the reason they left their jobs in the first place.
The ruling was handed down last week in the case of Spain v. Employment Security Department and Batey v. Employment Security Department. The case involved two women who quit their jobs, one reportedly citing verbal abuse and the other saying she quit due to disagreements with management. Both were denied unemployment benefits.
The court said when the state legislature enacted unemployment benefit rules, it did not disqualify all workers who voluntarily left their jobs but rather those who left "voluntarily without good cause." The ruling goes on to say the legislature has never defined good cause.
"We must decide whether the statutory list of reasons that do not disqualify an individual from benefits is also an exhaustive list of good cause reasons to voluntarily leave a job without losing benefit eligibility. We conclude it is not," reads the court written opinion.
The court remanded the case back to the state Employment Security Department to determine whether the women had good cause to leave their jobs based on their claims.

That's a pretty unfair headline. I've worked some pretty crap jobs before, and quit for darn good reasons. As in, being ordered to serve rotten food, deny discounts to customers, etc. Why should someone who gets laid off hit the jackpot? Hint: in crappy retail and food service jobs, there are almost never layoffs.

The trouble is many fold. First of all, unemployment comes out of the pocket of both the employer and the taxpayer.
If there is an economic downturn, this makes employers think twice, because if they fire employees, they will still have to pay them. So they do not gleefully fire employees on a whim.
However, when you quit a job, you quit as an individual. Why should your ex-employer, or the taxpayer, pay unemployment for nothing? Anyone can think up an excuse about how they were oppressed at the job they quit.
This is why the rule has always been that if you quit, it is your problem, but if you are fired, you deserve employment. Quitting is your choice.

Here in California at least, I contribute to unemployment with every paycheck - it's called unemployment insurance. When I leave an employer voluntarily, as I did last year when it became perfectly clear that I was not going to receive the promotion I was seeking and that management was going to maximize its profits at the cost of decreased safety for its employees and those we worked for and with, why should the employer have the final say on whether or not I receive unemployment benefits when I worked for them a mere 2 weeks and was grandfathered into their employment when my previous company lost the contract where I worked? Why should any employer have the right to deny me unemployment benefits when I have been paying on that unemployment insurance policy for many years? That's my money, not theirs and not the state's. Granted that the employer contributes to the policy, but that's an issue between them and the state and the unions, not between the employer and the employee.
PS. My claim was deined by an employer I had worked for for 2 weeks, as explained above, and later denied on appeal when the adjudicator sided with the employer. So, 4 years worth of paying into that unemployment insurance policy went for nothing and it amounted to hundreds or thousands of dollars paid it - for what? Nada, zip, zero, nothing - and you bet your ass I'm bitter about that!
