On the same day that the anti-poverty group ACORN announced the launch of an "internal review" after four undercover videos exposed its workers offering advice on how to skirt federal laws, a fifth video surfaced that purports to show a worker offering to help bring underage girls into the U.S. for the purposes of prostitution.
The latest video was filmed in San Diego by conservative activist James O'Keefe, 25, and partner Hannah Giles, 20, who posed as a pimp and prostitute as they did in their previous undercover stings.
In the latest video, O'Keefe asked the man if Tijuana is the best place to bring the girls to cross over into the U.S.
The man replied "yes," because he has a lot of contacts there who can assist in bringing them across the border. Here's the video (sorry - don't know how to imbed)

ACORN, calling the actions of some of its employees "indefensible," has suspended advising new clients as part of its service programs and is setting up an independent review to see what happened.
ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis said in a written statement that she was "ordering a halt to any new intakes into ACORN's service programs until completion of an independent review." The actions were taken, she said, "as a result of indefensible action of a handful of our employees."
Videos of ACORN workers giving tax advice to people posing as prostitutes and other revelations have led to growing criticism of the organization in recent days.
Lewis continued: "We have all been deeply disturbed by what weve seen in some of these videos. I must say, on behalf of ACORN's Board and our Advisory Council, that we will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust. ACORN, an advocacy group, has fired at least four employees after hidden camera videos showed the group's workers giving financial advice to women posing as prostitutes. The firings occurred in the group's Washington and Baltimore offices.
ACORN has been targeted for years by conservative groups that consider it a sometimes unsavory arm of Democratic electoral politics. The Senate voted earlier this week to deny funding to the organization to help with the next census.
ACORN stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. It advocates for poor people. It conducted a large voter registration effort last year and some employees were accused of submitting false registration forms with names such as "Mickey Mouse." ACORN has said only a handful of employees submitted false registration forms.
Of their half a million employees some presumed-to-be small number file numerous false forms -- a federal felony -- and some other presumably small number (we hope not the same ones) demonstrate willingness to aid and abet felonious behaviour. Were I in charge, we would put all operations on hold until every employee had a criminal background check and one of the Big Five accounting firms had conducted a thorough audit... as a start. Perhaps bring in one of the major management consulting firms to redesign all our systems to make sure our clients, both retail and government, would be able to trust us going forward. Get the president's brother to repay that million dollars he wandered off with, to pay the first installment on the cost. The president and the board will have to pay for the rest, given that as a charity, ACORN shouldn't have any money lying about for such things. No doubt this post demonstrates exactly why nobody is asking me to be in charge.

Having seen the videos, I am amazed that something that looks so much like a SNL comedy sketch - on both sides - could be real, but O'Keefe did this same sort of thing before, at Planned Parenthood.
We don't know how many ACORN offices James & Hannah went to, but it couldn't have been too many, and they managed to find at least five 'flawed' ones - there's no way to make those statistics look benign.

I suspect that a full blown investigation of ACORN's shady financial ties to several national politicans will prove absolutely disasterous for the Democratic(or Demoncratic) party. They will have to stop the investigation at all costs.

Last night, Jon Stewart featured video clips of ACORN employees advising undercover journalists posing as a pimp and a prostitute how to hide the nature of their business in their tax forms.
The video clips debuted on biggovernment.com and were featured by FOX News commentator Glenn Beck. Since then the clips have circulated widely on conservative blogs and news sites and sparked a vote in the Senate to de-fund the organization.
"The bad news is that ACORN appears to be a criminal organization that aids and abets criminals and get millions of dollars in taxpayer money!" Stewart said, after highlighting the clips on his show.
Stewart joined conservatives in their criticism of the media, wondering why major media outlets failed to investigate ACORN or report on the investigative videos.
"Where were the real reporters on this story...Where the hell were you?" Stewart screamed into the camera.
"You're telling me that two kids from the cast of High School Musical 3 can break this story with a video camera and their grandmother's chinchilla coat, and you've got nothin'?" he asked. "I'm a fake journalist, and I'm embarrassed these guys scooped me. Let's get to work people!"
That's it, then. Mr. Stewart's audience read the New York Times, etc, or at least they fancy themselves the kind of people who would read the NYT if they actually, you know, read. In other words, the kind of people the NYT, etc would like to seduce into becoming regular customers.

Now it's okay for all the "cool kids" to say ACORN is bad without coming across as "racist".
If Stephen Colbert zings them too, ACORN's gonna be in a heap of trouble. (Who knows, maybe then Congress might actually sorta/kinda investigate what's going on in that cesspool?)

See, this is what you get from affirmative action paralysis, just like with our President. You cant criticize for obvious transgressions for fear of the backlash or being labeled racist. Long ago Limbaugh said that if you are a businessman and want the ability to critics and fire employees for malfeasance, those employees better be white males.

And one of the delicious side-effects is that it makes 60 Minutes look very,very, very bad. As in sclerotic, ancient ... and worse than that, out of touch. Dan Rather's old pals must be squirming like a sack full of eels this week, being the butt of jokes like this.
And ACORN is going down, and if there are a lot more episodes of the James & Hannah show, changing the name won't help, much - whatever the call themselves next may go down as well.

There oughta be an investigation on how ACORN even started getting federal money 15 years ago.
Um...it was created out of the Community Reinvestment Act. The Clinton Administration began the drive toward taxpayer funds through its shenanigans with the banks 'donating' funds to ACORN in order to comply with the CRA. Then came the expansion of ACORN into 'vote generation' (eh-hem, I meant voter registration).
It was created out of CRA and, for the most part, ALWAYS been funded by the 'taxpayer' (by one means or the other). ACORN was truly the first mainstream 'community organizer' organizations.
Oh, and let's not forget that its founder, Dale Rathke, resigned last year after his brother Wade was found to have embezzled almost $1million from the group. However, Dale Rathke continues as a 'chief organizer' for ACORN Int'l LLC.
This is not 'news'...it's just that nobody was paying attention (except me and a bunch of fellow Rantburgers).
Does anyone know if the statute of limitations is sufficiently long to permit the next administration to launch criminal investigations into Bambi's Justice Dept for dropping the Black Panther case, reinvestigating the Steven's case handling, and any possible charges for racketeering/conspiracy/accessory/fraud regarding crimes committed by ACORN staff, including those that did not report illegal activity????
I think it's pretty obvious that there won't be investigations by this administration (but pigs have flown before...)

I believe the Holder Doctrine(c) being contemplated right now to prosecute current and former CIA for keeping this nation safe during the Bush Administration is going to provide the precedent to in fact make it happen. The left's ultimate failure in the US is the inability to grasp a fundamental principle that the founding fathers engineered into the government - don't give the government the power or authority to do anything you wouldn't want your worst enemy to have.

To be charitable, I think the Speaker usually votes only to break ties.
However, according to reader Kevin O'Brien on Glenn Reynolds' site:
Its a typical these-voters-are-such-rubes stunt; the House and Senate voted to defund ACORN on different bills.
The Senate bill is a housing bill, the House bill the federal takeover of student loans. Each bill will wind up in conference committee where the ACORN ban can be quietly stripped out, behind closed doors and secure from prying eyes. Then the org can keep on doing its important work of voter fraud and pandering to presumed pedophiles.
The most useful principle to hold close when considering members of Congress: theyre all crooks.

"ACORN is dead, long live COI". ACORN is changing it's name to protect the guilty. Wonder how much of our money the "new" organization will get.
The House of Representatives wasted no time in lowering the boom this week on the rude and inexcusable conduct of Rep. Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina. Wilson yelled out "you lie" while President Barack Obama was delivering his health care reform appeal to a joint session of Congress last week.
It took just six days for the House to approve a formal rebuke of Wilson.
OK. So far, so good.
Now, what about the questionable conduct of some other members of the House?
Take Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Rangel has been under investigation by the House ethics committee for 10 months.
Granted, this is more complicated than one lout shouting "You lied."
But Rangel's alleged conduct could be far more damaging to the reputation of the House. He faces allegations that he:
--Controlled four rent-stabilized New York City apartments, one of which he illegally turned into a campaign office.
-- Took a homestead exemption on a Washington D.C. house, which is only available for a primary residence. Under New York law, a rent-controlled apartment must be your primary residence.
--Solicited donations on congressional letterhead for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York and worked to preserve a tax break for an oil drilling company after its top executive donated $1 million to the center.
--Failed to report to the IRS and pay taxes on $75,000 in rental income from a beachfront property in the Dominican Republic.
--Underestimated on his House ethics statement the value of a Florida condo he and his wife owned.
--Violated House disclosure rules by failing to report the full details of some privately sponsored trips.
There's more. Last month, Rangel amended his House financial disclosure forms to report profits from the sale of a Harlem townhouse, thousands of dollars in mutual fund dividends and two checking accounts valued at $250,000 to $500,000 each.
Rangel has displayed an appalling lack of candor and care in his financial affairs, yet he remains chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee.
Did the House Democratic leadership learn nothing from the political price that Republicans paid for their ham-handed handling of ethics issues when they were in charge of the House?
By not dealing swiftly and forthrightly with Rangel, the Democrats are telling the public that ethics doesn't really matter. Charlie Rangel? He's too important for that.
Democrats, rap Joe Wilson for being a boor. He was.
But you still have a much larger problem in your midst.
By the mid-1960s Powell was being increasingly criticized for mismanagement of the committee budget, taking trips abroad at public expense (including travel to his retreat on the Bahamian isle of Bimini), and missing sittings of his committee. He was also under attack in his district, where his refusal to pay a slander judgment made him subject to arrest. He spent increasing amounts of time in Florida.
Following allegations that Powell had misappropriated Committee funds for his personal use and other charges, in January 1967 the House Democratic Caucus stripped Powell of his committee chairmanship. The full House refused to seat him until completion of an investigation by the Judiciary Committee. Powell urged his supporters to "keep the faith, baby" while the investigation went on. On March 1 the House voted 307 to 116 to exclude him. Powell said "On this day, the day of March in my opinion, the end of the United States of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave."[5]
Powell won the special election in April to fill the vacancy caused by his exclusion, but did not take his seat. He sued in Powell v. McCormack to retain his seat. In June 1969 the Supreme Court ruled that the House had acted unconstitutionally when it excluded Powell, a duly elected member. He returned to the House, but without his seniority. Again his absenteeism was increasingly noted.[6]
In June 1970 Powell was defeated in the Democratic primary by Charles B. Rangel. In fall 1970, He failed to get on the ballot for the November election as an Independent.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said yesterday she is clueless about an amendment to prohibit government funds for embattled ACORN, although it overwhelmingly passed the Senate Monday and the White House is calling for the group to be held accountable.
"I don't even know what they passed," Pelosi told The Post yesterday. "What did they do? They defunded it?"
The amendment to suspend housing grants was a stunning blow to the community-activist group -- and came as some Democrats and the White House have been backing away from the group.
The vote was preceded by the release of videos by conservative activists posing as a pimp and prostitute soliciting -- and receiving -- tips from ACORN employees about how to shield income, avoid taxes and set up a brothel. The issue now goes to a House-Senate conference committee for a spending bill. Its fate is up to Democratic leaders, particularly Pelosi, since the House passed no such provision.
Some fellow lawmakers were surprised that Pelosi wasn't following the issue.
"I think that she's not focused on the issue of corruption," said Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who has been hammering ACORN.

Pelosi is too busy consolidating power. Her day is coming, and it will be sooner than I ever thought. What an incredible dolt. The Donks had the world by the short hairs and they got too greedy. All they had to do was show leadership. Focus on one agenda item at a time, and the world would have been theirs for the foreseeable future. Instead, because of surprisingly inept leadership and vision, they pissed away the goodwill of the American people. And a heck of a lot faster than GW and the Trunks did.

As a Beacon Hill vote on the push to allow Gov. Deval Patrick to appoint an interim U.S. Senator draws closer, President Obama's political committee sent another mass e-mail urging constituents to demand passage of the bill.
The Herald reported today that the vote, scheduled to happen tomorrow, has a majority in both the House and the Senate. "Before they vote, all your state representatives need to hear loud and clear the support we all share for an interim Senate appointment," wrote John Spears, Massachusetts director of Obama's political committee Organizing for America.
Lawmakers in a 17-member committee are expected to endorse the legislation tonight and send it to the House floor. The move comes as U.S. Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus released a detailed sketch of the $856 billion health care bill.
State legislators were originally leery of the push because they voted in 2004 to strip former Gov. Mitt Romney of his appointment power. The political move was done to prevent Romney from appointing a Republican in the U.S. Senate if Sen. John Kerry was elected president.
Critics have called the new law another political power grab and Senate Republicans plan on using legislative maneuvers to stall the bill.

Debra J. Saunders Will the sex scandal of former GOP Assemblyman Mike Duvall make a difference for the California GOP? In that Duvall -- now known as Spanky -- had the good sense to resign 15 hours into the scandal, the answer would be: No.
Orange County Republicans are like weeds. Cut off one and another will grow in its place. With any luck, Duvall's replacement will respect the position and not treat the Capitol like a frat house. True, Duvall comes across as another Republican family-values hypocrite -- but that's only because he proved to be one. The beefy lawmaker bragged in graphic detail before what he thought was a turned-off Capitol microphone about two affairs -- one with a Sacramento lobbyist with business before the energy committee on which he was vice chairman. Insiders, who wouldn't blink at the news of a lawmaker straying outside his marriage vows, were left dumbstruck at the Duvall's barrier-breaking stupidity.
The issue isn't that Duvall failed as a role model, because no one knew who he was until his chatter about spanking and lingerie catapulted Duvall from Sacramento obscurity into the limelight of international scorn.
GOP leaders did not lift a finger to defend Duvall for saying the indefensible. To the contrary, even before Duvall's resignation, Orange County GOP Chairman Scott Baugh called on Duvall to quit.
Why does this keep happening to family-values Republicans? Probably for the same reason it happens to Democrats, like former Sen. John Edwards and former prosecutor and New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer: Because it happens. And because they get caught.
In a sense, Duvall's fall shows how too-big political egos are a problem that takes care of itself. Pols get arrogant, and that means sloppy.

In what is currently a difficult political climate for Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid trails two potential Republican challengers seeking to unseat him as he faces reelection next year in Nevada.
The first Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of the 2010 race shows Sue Lowden beating Reid by 10 percentage points, 50% to 40%. Lowden is chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party and the preferred candidate of the Republican party establishment.
GOP hopeful Danny Tarkanian beats Reid by seven points, 50% to 43%. Tarkanian is a former basketball player for the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and the son of a legendary college basketball coach.
Any incumbent who polls below the 50% level is considered potentially vulnerable, and Reid is clearly in that category. Likely to help him somewhat, however, are the problems the state GOP is experiencing, with a highly unpopular governor and the state's other senator, John Ensign, forced to disclose an extramartial affair.

At a banquet/fundraiser for the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California last weekend, the first speaker was Arif Alikhan (Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles - in charge of public safety for the city). He bid farewell, as he is going to take a post as Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. Arif Alikhan is a devout Sunni and the son of Pakistani immigrants (here).

Professor Agha Saeed of the American Muslim Task Force (AMT) spoke of the aftermath of 9/11 and the struggle of the Muslim Community against the pervasive atmosphere of Islamophobia and hatred. It was a struggle against the tide - a very strong tide - to prevent Muslims in America from being marginalized and silenced.
Professor Saeed ....issued five demands from Muslims to the Department of Justice. These demands included a cessation to the infiltration by spies of mosques and an end to the introduction of agents provocateur. In addition there was to be a cessation of attempts to undermine Muslim groups such as the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Why Alikhan? DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano noted Alikhans broad and impressive array of experience in national security, emergency preparedness and counterterrorism. I am not sure what she is talking about (neither is she, I am sure.)

He began his career seven years ago, when he took a job with the Department of Justice hunting down computer hackers, crooks who were selling merchandise on Ebay at rock-bottom prices. In his former position as an assistant US attorney, Alikhan consistently did his work accurately and silently, never producing any headlines. But then he suddenly became one of the most important men in Los Angeles, America's second-largest city after New York.
He took the position of Deputy Mayor in November 2006. The year that the Congress went Democrat and history and America took a disastrous turn. Muslim organizations demonstrated a strong unity of purpose and message on the issue of 'mapping' that led to a position of strength for Muslims in the meeting. Those involved in the initial phases of this controversy were the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, and Muslim Advocates.
Today, the people of Los Angeles spoke and the City of Los Angeles listened to the collective voice for justice and civil rights.
