[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] As of Sept. 1 2021, it will be a felony in Texas to pay for sexual services of any sort. Does that include jewelry, movie + dinner?
The bill, titled House Bill 1540, passed unanimously on Thursday and was signed into law by Republican Governor Greg Abbott ... governor of Texas. Abbott is a Republican. His 2014 Dem opponent, state senatrix Wendy Davis, thought the absolute, most pressing, most important issue facing the state was abortion. Abbott beat the pantyhose off her. His 2018 opponent, Lupe Valdez didn't dwell too heavily on abortion, but she lost too... Sandra Guerra Thompson, the director of the Criminal Justice Institute at the University of Houston Law School, summarized the rationale behind the new law.
"This law is a rethinking of the traditional supply side in prosecutions that tended to target the women who were involved in these activities and not the buyers. It's also coming from a growing awareness that oftentimes, those involved are from a vulnerable class," Thompson said, according to The Hill.
The law appears to be modeled on what has previously been dubbed the Nordic model, which was first implemented in Sweden. Under this model, hookersprostitutes sex workers ...the oldest profession was legal (though not always unregulated) for thousands and perhaps even millions of years. That never has made it something most people want their daughters doing... are not criminally liable, but their customers are.
The debate continues to rage worldwide over what the legal status of sex work should be.
Kathleen Kim of Loyola Marymount University Law School strongly disagreed with the new Texas measure, saying, "Putting individual 'johns' in jail will do absolutely nothing for victims of trafficking."
"In fact, it harms them because evidence demonstrates that the more resources that go into law enforcement approach, the more that victims lose because resources that ought to be going towards things like victim benefits, social services support, and legal advocacy, is still unavailable and maybe even diminished because more resources are going toward a dominant criminal enforcement approach."

In reality, the Taliban makes no secret of what it is all about: It is an Islamic group, dedicated to establishing the rule of Islamic law in Afghanistan. The word "Taliban" means "students," i.e., students of the Qur’an and Sunnah. That’s basically all they’re about. The Taliban regards the "international community" as largely made up of jahili regimes, that is, societies of unbelievers that deserve no respect and certainly warrant no accommodation. Whether the "international community" accepts the Taliban or doesn’t, the Taliban will soldier on for Allah. If they attain victory now, they will rule Afghanistan. If they don’t, they will keep fighting against the next crowd of infidels that comes into the country.
I understand but disagree with those who felt we should leave Afghanistan; I cannot understand why it has been done with such tragic human cost; without an effective strategy to defend our partners; and with inestimable shock to our nation’s credibility, reliability, and honor.

Some difficulty was encountered with gaining the assistance of Zonians and others in 1989, prior to the US invasion of Panama and toppling of Noriega. Some of those were reluctant Americans (yes Americans) who had served in Vietnam and watched events unfold following the US withdrawal and fall of Saigon.

The only reasons he managed to come up with for this action are dubious in the extreme and the assembly members who have already been digging into the case are almost universally flummoxed over how this state of affairs came to pass. They learnt this stuff in college, you know... to "enforce and implement" the Trump-era Remain-in-Mexico policy in response to a lawsuit from Texas and Missouri, which claimed that the administration’s attempt to terminate the policy was illegal and harmful.
The two Republican states had sought a preliminary injunction against the administration’s June 1 memo formally ending the policy -- officially called the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). They argued that the ending of the policy was in breach of the Administrative Procedures Act (APA).
The ruling by Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, orders the Biden administration "to enforce and implement MPP in good faith" until it has been "lawfully rescinded" in compliance with the APA, and until the federal government has enough detention capacity to detail all migrants colonists subject to mandatory detention.
However, there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly... it notes the injunction is narrow and also states: "Nothing in this injunction requires DHS to take any immigration or removal action nor withhold its statutory discretion towards any individual thatit would not otherwise take."
