Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief May 20, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • JOURNALIST ALI LATIFI REPORTEDLY RELEASED – Well-known media personality Ali Latifi was arrested shortly after leaving the residence of the former President, Hashmat Ghani. Eyewitnesses say the Taliban charged him with consuming alcohol and possibly being drunk. The journalist was released shortly after the incident occurred and released a tweet that said everything was a misunderstanding and that he had been treated well.

  • PAKISTANI POLICE SEARCH FORMER PM’S HOME – After conflicting reports suggested ousted PM Khan had turned police away from his residence, the search was confirmed to have taken place and was led by the Police Commissioner of Lahore. The Police contingent was forced to obtain a search warrant after the initial visit to the Zaman Park residence. The search was focused on arresting 30-40 PTI party members who stand accused of arson and vandalism of military bases in last week’s violent demonstrations. It seems that no arrests were made but Khan’s associates were handed a list of over two thousand names of people who were wanted for questioning. Khan has been portraying the protests as a ‘conspiracy’ and has challenged the government to prove that PTI took part. An extension of bail has been granted in his highest-profile case and he will be free until the 2nd of June. The former PM sought medical care for stomach pain early on Saturday morning.

  • IRAN AND TALIBAN TRADE BARBS AND LEVY THREATS OVER HELMAND RIVER DISPUTE – Taliban officials criticized remarks made by the President of Iran over the water rights case that has caused decades of tension between the two countries. In a statement, the Taliban said the President’s remarks were inappropriate and cautioned its neighbor to refrain from using incendiary remarks in the future. After the remarks, Iran’s envoy in Kabul (Kazemi Qomi) demanded that a delegation be allowed to visit the Helmand River and assess its flow. He said the visit should take place within 30 days. Iran’s President had hinted at retaliatory acts if the Taliban do not honor the 1973 accord. Farmers and livestock growers in Sistan and Baluchistan Provinces say the water levels are insufficient to plant crops and water their animals. It is not clear what actions Iran could take if it determines the agreement is being violated.

  • RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER WARNS UKRAINE THE US COULD ABANDON IT LIKE IT DID IN AFGHANISTAN – Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister made remarks in an interview reminding Ukraine’s leaders of the US’s short attention span when it came to international causes. The FM specifically brought up the Afghanistan and Egyptian cases to make his point.

  • LAND REFORM PROGRAM IN TAKHAR RESULTS IN ANOTHER CLASH – Locals in the Khaja Bahauddin District challenged the Taliban officials who were attempting to seize land from citizens and pass it to nomads (Naqileen). The land in question was considered valuable grazing property. The Taliban were acting on an order from Kabul to redistribute 1,000 acres to the Naqileen. The locals reputedly used farm implements to threaten the Taliban officials and drive them away. The incident is said to have taken place on Thursday and locals expect the Taliban to return in force and continue the process.

National Security Forces seize military consignment at Mogadishu Port
Yesterday we had the announcement, today here are the details.
[GoobjoogNews] National Security Forces seize military consignment at Mogadishu Port https://t.co/6UqCrSnOVN— Goobjoog News (@GoobjoogNews) May 19, 2023

The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has seized a consignment of military equipment at the Mogadishu port believed to have been intended for use by the al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them...
holy warriors.

Speaking at a news conference in Mogadishu, State Minister of Defense Mohammed Ali Haga said the agency found the arms labeled with false manifests indicating that the goods were intended for commercial use.

"At the port of Mogadishu, NISA personnel discovered a shipment of military hardware and kabooms concealed within containers posing as authorized business imports," Haga said.

He added that the sleuths had been monitoring the plan to import the arsenal to the country and that intelligence officers tracked the consignment from the source until it arrived in Mogadishu in containers.

So far, 10 people including businessmen who illegally use their import-export licenses have been detained. NISA has also seized four trucks that were supposed to ferry the illegal military consignment from the Port of Mogadishu upon clearance.

"Our agency has been following the activities of these individuals in Somalia and outside Somalia," Haga said. "It has been following their involvement in this smuggling network. Fortunately, all of them are in jug, and none has escaped."

NISA officials also seized a similar consignment of equipment intended for al-Shabaab use at Mogadishu International Airport, underscoring the commitment of the Federal Government of Somalia and its security apparatus to rid the country of terrorism.

"Our forces have also seized military equipment at Mogadishu’s Aden Ade International Airport," Haga added.

This comes as the Prime Minister of the Federal of Government of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre chaired a high-level security meeting in Mogadishu, in which he lauded and encouraged the security forces to maintain their hold on the capital and remain relentless in their pursuit of wresting the remaining regions from cruel hands of the Al-Shabaab.

At least 20 killed in Burkina's troubled north: local sources
[AlAhram] At least 20 people were killed in a series of raids on villages in Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
's troubled north, security sources and local residents told AFP Friday.

Armed men attacked three villages early on Thursday in the country's northern Yatenga province.

"Yesterday at around 5 am (local and GMT), gangs attacked the villages of Pelle, Zanna and Nongfaire", a local resident said Friday, giving a toll of 25 people killed.

There were "many others injured", the resident said.

Another resident said that "the assailants who came on cycle of violences were chased by volunteers (civilian auxiliaries of the army) and soldiers".

The attack was confirmed by a security source, who put the corpse count at "around twenty" adding that search operations were underway to find the assailants.

The attackers "were hit by air support after taking refuge in the Barga forest. Several of them died," said another security source.

Burkina Faso, which saw two military coups in 2022, has been battling a jihadist insurgency that crossed from Mali in 2015.

Captain Ibrahim Traore, Burkina's transitional president after staging the most recent coup on September 30, has set a goal of recapturing the 40 percent of the country's territory which is controlled by jihadists affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State

group.

The violence has seen more than 10,000 killed -- both civilians and military -- according to the NGOs, and displaced an estimated two million people.

Earlier this week, some 20 non-combatants were killed in two attacks by suspected jihadists 400 kilometres further south in the Centre-Est region, bordering Togo and Ghana.

City cop shoppe Station House Officer (SHO) Sher Ali Mandokhail told Dawn.com that all of the injured were being treated at Civil Hospital, Zhob and one of them was at death's door.

He said Haq’s vehicle was partly damaged in the incident while the JI emir remained unhurt.

In a tweet, the JI also said that Haq — who was visiting the area to address a political gathering — was safe and that the attacker had been killed.

Jewish, Palestinian worshipers clash in Jerusalem a day after city’s Flag March
[IsraelTimes] Rioters throw stones, injuring two 20-year-olds and a policeman, as law enforcers try to disperse crowd; 8 arrested in overnight disturbances across the capital

Clashes between Jewish and Paleostinian worshipers broke out across Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday, a day after the contentious annual Flag March through the Moslem Quarter, which was again marred by abuse and racism toward Paleostinians.

Rioters at the Lion’s Gate threw rocks and other objects at each other, as police stood between the groups and used riot dispersal methods to clear the crowd, police said. The violence came as Israelis commemorated Jerusalem Day, marking the reunification of East and West Jerusalem during the 1967 Six Day War.

Amid the violence, two 20-year-olds — reportedly Jews — suffered light injuries to the head and were taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.

A policeman was also maimed and required medical treatment.

Overnight Thursday, eight suspects were arrested in violent mostly peaceful incidents across Jerusalem.

Border Police were deployed to disperse Jewish and Arab rioters who threw stones at each other and vehicles in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of A-Tur, causing damage to cars, according to a police statement.

Police said they detained two residents of East Jerusalem and three West Bank settlers for questioning over the disturbances.

In another incident, two suspects were arrested for spraying pepper spray at civilians and soldiers outside Jerusalem’s Old City. There were no reports of injuries as a result of the attacks.

Also near the Old City, a 25-year-old suspect from the coastal city of Ashdod was arrested for spraying pepper spray at two civilians. They were lightly maimed and required medical treatment.

The disturbances on Friday and Thursday came after the annual Flag March to the Western Wall, which is meant to celebrate Jerusalem’s reunification. It has gained notoriety over the years as it is often tainted by hate speech and violence by far-right Jewish participants toward Paleostinians and their property.

This year’s event once again featured racist chants and scuffles with Paleostinian residents as the largely teenage, religious nationalist participants made their way through the Old City’s Moslem Quarter.

"Deeply disturbed by the inciteful and racist chants by some Israeli participants in the annual flag march held in Jerusalem’s Old City yesterday," UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland tweeted Friday, following earlier international criticism. "I deplore the attacks on journalists while covering the march. Such actions and statements only breed fear, hatred and distrust."

"All leaders have a responsibility to act against snuffies and to speak out against acts of violence and incitement," Wennesland added.

Police said they arrested 10 people even before the formal start of the Thursday rally at 4 p.m., including several left-wing activists who temporarily blocked a West Bank highway outside of Jerusalem while attempting to prevent settlers from attending the march. Several other people were detained for provoking Paleostinians, police said.

Despite several dozen instances of violence and harassment by Jewish participants, and pre-march threats by Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamaswith about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
terror groups, the rally managed to conclude without a major incident. Two years ago, Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", fired a barrage of rockets at Jerusalem to coincide with the march, leading to an 11-day war between Israel and Gaza.

Terrorist attack against government troops foiled in Syria
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM]. An attempted terrorist attack against Syrian government troops was thwarted in the Syrian region of Al-Tanf. This was announced on May 19 at a briefing by the deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in the Arab Republic (TsPVS), Rear Admiral Oleg Gurinov .

ATTACK ATTEMPTED IN AL-TANF REGION FOILED IN SYRIA
As Gurinov clarified, an attempt to commit a terrorist attack against the Syrian security forces was stopped in the Al-Tanf region, which is under the control of the so-called "international anti-terrorist coalition."

It is noted that a group of militants was found in the area west of Mount Tell al-Tuwayed on May 18 at about 23:30 local time. The militants in three pickup trucks were noticed by servicemen of point 134 of the tank brigade of the Syrian armed forces, the terrorists tried to covertly leave the al-Tanf area.

After fire from the Syrian security forces, the group managed to hide in the area of the Slubi valley, in the territory under the control of the “coalition” troops.

Gurinov pointed out that the incident clearly demonstrated the inability of the "coalition" to ensure control over the al-Tanf regions, as well as to fulfill obligations to suppress terrorist attacks by radical extremist groups that maintain a presence in southern Syria.

Earlier , IA Regnum reported that the Pentagon's statement about the destruction in early May in the northwestern part of Syria of a militant who allegedly had great influence in the Al-Qaeda terrorist group (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) may turn out to be erroneous .

Experts in the field of combating terrorism, after analyzing the information about the electronic correspondence of militants, did not find any evidence of links between the murdered local resident and terrorist groups.

SDF says Turkish drone kills civilian in Manbij
[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday said a civilian was killed in a Ottoman Turkish drone attack in northern Syria.

"Today evening, at about 6:30 p.m., a Ottoman Turkish UAV belonging to the Ottoman Turkish occupation targeted a civilian car in the al-Kharoufia village in the southern countryside of Manbij city, causing severe injuries to the civilian Abdul Wahab al-Muhammad al-Hajj Hamidi, who was immediately taken to the hospital to be martyred later despite medical intervention," read a statement from the Manbij Military Council and published by the SDF.

Manbij is a strategically located town at a crossroads connecting Aleppo, Raqqa, and the Kurdish-administered northeast. It is under the control of the Manbij Military Council, a local Kurdish-led force affiliated with the SDF. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Turkey accuses the Syrian Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the backbone of the SDF, of being the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an gang struggling for Kurdish rights in Turkey and named a terror group by Ankara. The YPG denies the charge.

The SDF is the main ally of the US-led global coalition against ISIS in Rojava and has carried out several raids against the group in recent weeks, arresting several suspects, including big shots.

Ankara frequently targets SDF military bases and alleged vehicles with drones. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Turkey has carried out over a dozen aerial attacks against Kurdish forces in northeast Syria (Rojava) in the last five months, killing 11 fighters and five civilians.

Iran hangs 3 linked to Amini protests, drawing condemnations
[IsraelTimes] Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi and Saeed Yaghoubi were found guilty of shooting dead three members of the security forces at a protest

Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
on Friday executed three men convicted of killing security force members during protests triggered by Mahsa Amini’s death last year, the judiciary said, drawing condemnation from rights groups.

Majid Kazemi, Saleh Mirhashemi and Saeed Yaghoubi were found guilty of "moharebeh" — or waging "war against God" — for shooting dead three members of the security forces at a demonstration in the central city of Isfahan on November 16, the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website said.

Iran witnessed waves of nationwide protests following the September 16 death of 22-year-old Amini, an Iranian Kurd who had been arrested for an alleged breach of the Islamic republic’s strict dress rules for women. During the protests, which Tehran generally labelled as foreign-instigated "riots," thousands of Iranians were arrested and hundreds killed including dozens of security forces.

Friday’s hangings bring to seven the total number of Iranians executed in connection with the demonstrations.

Kazemi, Mirhashemi and Yaghoubi were arrested in November and sentenced to death in January. They were also charged with membership of "illegal groups with the intention of disrupting national security and collusion leading to crimes against internal security," Mizan said.

It noted "evidence and documents in the case and the clear statements made by the accused" showed that "the shootings carried out by these three people led to the martyrdom of three security forces."
