Algerian army surrounds armed group
(KUNA) -- Algerian army forces are besieging a group of 12 gunmen in Skikda, 560 km east Algiers, security sources said here Friday. Acting on a tip-off, the army moved immediately to get engaged in clashes with the armed group before surrounding its elements, the sources said. During the operation, Algerian troops destroyed hideouts of the gunmen and recovered a considerable quantity of munitions, they added. Meanwhile, another armed group killed two members of self-defence divisions and seized their firearms at Amarna in Sidi Bel Abbes State, 450 km west Algiers.

#3  Real democracy in Kenya means candidates position themselves as either pro-US and non-genuine anti-fundamentalist, or genuine fundamentalist Muslim, ie Islamist (probably supported by Saudi Arabian money, too, but I didn't read that far -- perhaps there's a surprise in the final paragraph, but someone else will have to look for it). I hope that helps, Icerigger.

#4  It's the old wheels-within-wheels routine.

Kenya has had a sizeable muslim population for centuries. Based on experience, they've never been friendly to Americans (neither are most Kenyans), but strip away the usual NYT-template and the ex-Newsweek journalist's agenda, and somebody's obviously got them really whacked up and paranoid.

Take your pick of the usual suspects - Saudi Wahabbis, Yemenis, Somalis, etc. But in a way, the low-level paranoia and confusion seems almost Cold-War like.

Arabia
Saudis bust ring planning Haj attack
Saudi security forces have arrested Al Qaeda militants suspected of planning to mount attacks during the current Haj pilgrimage, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television said yesterday. The television quoted an unnamed security official as saying the suspects aimed to cause "security confusion" during the pilgrimage, in which more than two million Muslims are taking part. They were arrested in various cities in the kingdom days before the start of the pilgrimage on Monday, the official was quoted as saying. The report did not say how many were being held.

#5  the 1979 Grand Mosque seizure.

But the Saudi regime responded to the takeover not only with the "stick" but with the "carrot," trying to please those likely to have sympathized with the takeover. It granted greater powers to the religious establishment. Crackdowns followed on everything from shopkeepers who did not close for salah and newspapers that showed photos of women, to the selling of dolls, teddy bears (images of animate objects being haraam), and dog food (dogs considered unclean).[

India-Pakistan
Two arrested in Indian courthouse blasts
Police on Saturday arrested two men suspected of being Islamic terrorists militants involved in a series of explosions that ripped through courthouse complexes in three north Indian cities last month, killing at least 16 lawyers.

The men, who police suspect belong to the Bangladesh-based Harkatul Jihad Al-Islami group, were arrested before dawn at a railway station near Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, said Brij Lal, a senior state police official. "The arrested men, identified as Mohammed Khalid and Mohammed Tariq, are suspected to be involved in the serial blasts at courts in Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi last month," he said.

Lal said both men are Indian Muslims and "part of a close network that provided local support to the terrorists." However, he would not say if they were suspected of actually planting the bombs.

Paks raid madrassah after mosque boom
Pakistani police raided an Islamic school and arrested seven students yesterday, hours after a suicide bomber killed at least 50 people inside a mosque packed with holiday worshippers at the home of the former interior minister, police said. The bombing, which left bloody clothes, shoes and pieces of flesh scattered across the house of worship, was the second suicide attack in eight months apparently targeting Aftab Khan Sherpao, who escaped injury. After the bombing, dozens of police and intelligence agents raided an Islamic school in the nearby village of Turangzai and arrested seven students, some of them Afghans, police officials said.

Iraq
Five killed in suicide attack on Iraqi police
A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-rigged minibus against a police station south of the Iraqi capital and killed five people, including four policemen on Friday, security officials and medics said. The attack took place at around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT) at Al-Rasheed police station in the town of Yusifiyah, 25 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Baghdad, security officials said. Eight people were also wounded in the attack, including seven policemen. A medic at Baghdad's Al-Yarmukh hospital confirmed the attack and said the wounded policemen had been admitted for treatment at the facility. Insurgents regularly attack Iraqi security forces in a bid to sabotage the battered country's attempt to build its own armed forces.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli army pulls out from central Gaza after killing seven militants
(Xinhua) -- Several Israeli army tanks and armored vehicles pulled out from central Gaza Strip on Thursday after killing seven Palestinian militants and wounding nine others, including two local cameramen, witnesses said. Early on Thursday, Palestinian residents said that more than 10 tanks, bulldozers and armored vehicles rolled into an area east of al-Mughazi refugee camp in central Gaza Strip amid intensive gunfire.

The witnesses said that heavy armed clashes broke out in the area between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian gunmen, who are members of several Gaza armed groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad (Holy War). Moaweya Hassanein, chief of emergency in the Palestinian ministry of health said that seven Palestinians were killed and nine wounded, including two local cameramen. Armed groups sources said that four of the dead are members of Islamic Jihad armed wing, two from Hamas armed wing, and one from the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC).

The operation lasted for about 18 hours in the area, where an Israeli army spokesman told Israel Radio that the operation was limited and part of the military routine to rein on militants firing rockets at Israel. The spokesman said five Israeli soldiers were injured, one seriously, adding that the wounded soldiers were evacuated for treatment in Israeli hospitals.

During the operation, several militant groups claimed responsibility for launching more homemade rockets and mortar shells at Israel. The Islamic Jihad armed wing claimed responsibility for wounding the Israeli soldiers by firing missiles and bombs at the Israeli army forces operating in the area.

Al-Qassam Brigades member killed in Khan Younis; Israeli forces withdraw from Al Maghazi
Ma'an – The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas announced that one of their members was killed on Friday morning, during clashes with Israeli forces in Abasan, Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. Dr Muawiya Hassanein, Head of Emergency and Ambulance Services in the Health Ministry, said twenty-seven-year-old Awad El Fahem was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, but died soon after arriving at the hospital.

On Thursday evening Israeli forces withdrew from both the Al-Maghazi refugee camp and the village of Al-Masdar in the central Gaza Strip, leaving seven Al Qassam and As-Saraya Brigades members dead and 27 injuried. Four Israeli soldiers were also injured during the invasion of Al-Masdar, one of them seriously.

The Israeli army announced that Thursday's military operation in the central Gaza Strip was part of "routine" operations and was not part of a large-scale incursion into Gaza, as had been alleged.

Thousands of Palestinians attend funeral of eight killed in Israeli invasion of Gaza
Ma'an – Thousands of people took to the streets of Gaza on Friday for the funeral of eight people killed in Thursday's Israeli incursion into the central Gaza Strip. They died during an Israeli invasion east of the Al- Maghazi refugee camp. The funeral processions started from Al-Shifa' Hospital in Gaza, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and Nasser Hospital. During the funeral procession everybody had gun sex bullets were fired in the air, amid chants demanding the resistance factions respond to the continued Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

In a telephone interview with Ma'an, Al-Quds brigades' spokesperson Abu Ahmad said that the Israeli attacks against Palestinians means that they want to eliminate the Palestinian resistance and stop their attacks against Israel. He also added that Al Quds brigades lead the resistance in Palestine and the Brigades' rockets had become a strategic threat to Israeli cities.

#2  During the funeral procession everybody had gun sex bullets were fired in the air, amid chants demanding the resistance factions respond to the continued Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

Only soldiers get a gun salute. The President gets one because he is Commander in Chief. These "people" were militants, and thus legal combatants .

In a telephone interview with Ma'an, Al-Quds brigades' spokesperson Abu Ahmad said that the Israeli attacks against Palestinians means that they want to eliminate the Palestinian resistance and stop their attacks against Israel.

Well, YEAH. You hit me, I hit you back. In fact, I'll hit you back harder and more often because I want you to stop. If YOUR Allah is so damn big, so damn smart, so damn powerful, and favors and loves Muslims so much, why doesn't he stop Israeli bullets and missiles and tanks himself? Why rely on international pressure on the Israelis?

I had a church member piss me off, and I'm still pissed off: we were discussing the palestinian situation, and she pompously asserted that the Israelis should stop attacking the Palestinians, even after I pointed out the rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. I rather heatedly insisted that maybe they should try stopping their attacks. She laughed, as if the thought that Palestinians should stop attacking civilians was crazy, but took seriously the thought that the IDF should stop attacking terrorists. Pissed me off.

#3  Until Israel can slaughter the entire bunch without deadly recriminations from the West, this mess will continue. While the paleostains deserve a good portion of the blame, I also heap scorn and ridicule upon those Western nations that demand that ISRAEL stop, but never say a word to the paleostains to rein in their foolishness. The $6-7 billion pledged by the west to the paleostains should have some serious strings attached - like "stop making war on Israel, or we'll give our tacit approval to wiping you out once and for all." Nothing else will work.
