While Anti-Gunners Hate It, Hong Kong Residents Long For Second Amendment
[Bearing Arms] While some anti-gun activists may pay lip service to the Second Amendment, still others want to see it repealed. They argue that it’s a roadblock used to curtail gun control in the United States.

They’re not wrong. Of course, that’s a feature, not a bug. It exists primarily to do just that, prevent tyrants from disarming the American public.

For anti-gunners, though, they don’t see it that way. They somehow are able to oppose President Trump and call him a tyrant while simultaneously wanting to make sure he has authority over all the guns.

No, it doesn’t make sense to me either.

However, while some want to repeal our Second Amendment, activists in Hong Kong seem to have a very different opinion on that single sentence in our Constitution.

#4  Lets talk scope.

I believe in gun ownership. If you don't own one you are irresponsible in regards to protecting the family.

When the Second Amendment was ratified by we the people, a gun was a one shot musket. 6 shooters were not even around yet.

My father, the proud owner of at least 10 guns of which one was an AR15 with a 30 round banana clip was a WWII vet. He fought the japs. He brought back a jap sword, medals, a jap bayonet. One of the souvenirs he was not allowed to keep per military and bring back home when he made it back to stateside was a jap machine gun. He took out the machine gun nest of 3 japs with a grenade and his 45. They did render a flesh wound to his leg during the conversation.

The shooter in Ohio had a gun that had a 100 round barrel clip. Dozens upon dozens of people were sitting ducks to this device bought "legally".

Should the Second Amendment include that device? Should the Second Amendment that was ratified to allow the people to have one shot muskets be modernized with some restrictions in modern times????

#5  ..the First Amendment cover a 'Free Press' which was a manually operated press, the technology of the times. It didn't envision radio, tv, cable, or mechanical automated printing.

The second militia act of 1792 required citizens to arm themselves - to wit

Militia members, referred to as "every citizen, so enrolled and notified", "...shall within six months thereafter, provide himself..." with a musket, bayonet and belt, two spare flints, a box able to contain not less than 24 suitable cartridges, and a knapsack. Alternatively, everyone enrolled was to provide himself with a powder horn, ¼ pound of gunpowder, 20 rifle balls, a shot-pouch, and a knapsack.

In simple language, the same equipment that the regular army soldiers of the time would carry. Remember they had just gotten rid of the King's army and we more than suspicious of any governmental standing army in their midst. By the standards so shown by the Founders, every able body citizen should be carrying the same standard weapon issued to our contemporary infantry.

#6  I'm with Phaick. A responsible family man.

An Ukranian AKM, a 12.7X45mm VKS very russian, a 2A1- Indian version of the SMLE Mk3 chambered for hog teeth, two very old 98 Ks more russians ! , a fully licensed snub nosed .32 Taurus for the yet more responsible wifey, and a disassembled 20mm anti-materiel (!) Vidhwansak - an Indian version of a South African 22 kilo lamentation.

I even have an IOF made willy pete lying around somewhere, I thought I'd use it on some diwali but it seemed like a waste. We once used them to burn drugs and counterfeit currency.

But my most prized possessions are these. Don't laugh. They're important.

This piece of shit is the staple weapon of the commonest Indian criminal, the ones no paperwork is needed to dispose of. Needless to say, a perforated body found with this in one hand and it's lone pathetic cartridge fired, the Lestrades pretty much take it from there.

Something way more important than using your fancy armaments, is knowing the traps and pitfalls SJW lawyers can use to put you away for protecting yourself ! Of course this whole approach is very Indian. American gun rights and your stand-your-ground laws give you so many easy choices.

#7  I have seen over and over law enforcement armed with hand guns take out an rookie offender who was armed with an assault weapon.

The exception was in Dallas where 12 police officers were shot by one well trained ex-army veteran armed with an assault weapon. But he had a huge element of surprise on the unexpecting officers.

Precopius2k presented the position that the US 2nd Amendment supporters have always maintained for a couple hundred years. However, now infantry have weapons that fire 800 rounds a minute and in one case a US soldier took out almost a dozen AK47 armed jihadi's in a house going room by room with that infantry weapon.

Just like computer technology, small arms technology is getting smaller and more devastatingly more powerful.

#8  Lets talk scope.

As compared with iron sights? Goofing aside, the 2nd Amendment is not about hardware, it's about protecting yourself from an abusive government.

After any successful revolution, the first order of business, after throwing their rascals out and putting our rascals in, is making sure nobody overthrows *us*. Tasks like executing suspected traitors, settling old scores, and of course, confiscating guns.

Our Founding Fathers took a different approach. Having a profound distrust of governments, or perhaps just a deep understanding of human nature, they built a system to limit government overreach. The right to bear arms is a critical part of that.

Just one more reason why America is the most interesting political experiment in the last few hundred years.

#9  Should the Second Amendment that was ratified to allow the people to have one shot muskets be modernized with some restrictions in modern times????

Not even if the government limits itself to one shot muskets.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Communist Chinese State Media: ‘White Nationalism Is Deeply Rooted in Trump's Mind'
[Breitbart] China’s state-run media quickly seized on the obsessions of their American counterparts over the weekend by linking President Donald Trump to "white nationalism" and blaming gun violence on the large supply of firearms and loose gun laws in the United States.

The Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times worked the "white supremacist" angle on Sunday, citing the manifesto left by El Paso, Texas, alleged mass murderer Patrick Crusius:

A hate crime is motivated by prejudice, and the victim is targeted because of their social group or race. Many US states have their hate crime laws. However, the number of hate crimes has increased in the US in recent years. This shows that US social conflicts are rising and the problem of racial discrimination is especially serious. The El Paso shooting has worsened fears of the increasing white supremacist threat in the North American country.

More importantly, although US President Donald Trump called the El Paso shooting a "hateful act" on Twitter, he has not yet recognized the seriousness of the white supremacist problem. What’s worse, white nationalism is deeply rooted in Trump’s mind. This can be seen from his attitude toward immigration, his insistence on building a border wall and his racist tweets. Instead of resolving the problem, he is even inciting white American people’s hatred.

The astute observer will note that China is not exactly eager to take in large numbers of migrants or refugees from beyond its borders. China takes border security very seriously, especially for the parts of its border that occasionally move further away from Beijing, deploys hardcore nationalist political themes on a daily basis, and is not gentle with minority populations or respectful of their beliefs.

One area where Communist China cannot be accused of hypocrisy is its advocacy of stricter gun control. The Global Times declared the U.S. "urgently needs gun control," although it acknowledged that "if the shooters’ hatred is not eliminated, they can still use other weapons to vent their anger on innocent people."

Get Ready For Higher Prices If New Tariffs Hit Goods From China, Retailers Warn
[NPR] Higher prices will be coming to stores this fall, retailers warn, if President Trump follows through with his threat to slap new tariffs on Chinese imports.
The End is Near.... according to NPR, Target, COSCO, Walmart, etc.
The White House pressed the tariff threat on Friday, even as Trump announced a new agreement aimed at boosting beef exports to Europe. A day earlier, Trump threatened to set a new 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of products imported from China.

Rising trade tensions prompted another sell-off on Wall Street on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down nearly 100 points, or 0.4%, recovering from steeper losses earlier in the day.

More than 40% of all the clothes sold in the United States are made in China, as are nearly 70% of the shoes and 88% of the toys.

Trump Ratchets Up U.S.-China Trade War With More Tariffs; Stocks Slide

These items have been largely untouched by the tariffs the president has already imposed on China over the past year. But they'll almost certainly be on the target list if additional tariffs are imposed Sept. 1.

#8  If you lock the border up, then when this would happen should correspond to drops in welfare, food stamps, et al. Thus reducing the cost in tax burden (matched by a reduction in bureaucracy). However, given the propensity of politicians to spend, spend, spend, it isn't going to happen.

As alluded to, we'll have to make choices. Prioritize our spending accordingly. Any retailer that has made a 'critical' product dependent upon China should pay the price for doing so in the marketplace.

BTW, what are they going to do if Beijing does another Tienanmen Square in Hong Kong and a grass roots movement engages in a boycott of "Made in China".

#13  By what mechanism does this tariff remove chinese supply?

It does not, it only raises chinese prices relative to others, therefore we should merely see a substitution to other suppliers.

#15  as Besoeker noted, US gets about half of its footwear from China

so what happens

say the cost at the Port of Entry is $10.00. The current duty is about $1.50. Post tariff the duty plus tariff would be $4.00. So, assuming a $40 for logistics, marketing, celebrity endorsers, buying off the groups that would otherwise protest the slave labor, profits, etc. the final price would be $54.00 instead of $51.50.

I.e. the likes of Apple, Nike, Disney etc would produce some significant % of their iPhones, Jordans and Frozen or Avengers Action Dolls in West Baltimore. Detroit. New Orleans. East St. Louis. Cleveland. Newark. Memphis. Oakland. S. Central LA.

Start doing some good for actual Americans.
And STFU.
