John Huber, tapped to probe FBI, a special counsel in every way but name
[Wash Times] Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have declined calls to appoint a second special counsel to probe the FBI’s behavior during the 2016 campaign, but the man he has picked to lead an internal Justice Department review is a special counsel in every way but name.

John W. Huber, the U.S. attorney in Utah, can convene a grand jury, issue subpoenas, collect evidence and order witnesses to testify ‐ all the usual powers a federal prosecutor has ‐ as he delves into whether the FBI abused its powers when it sought permission then carried out wiretapping of a Trump campaign figure, or whether it trod too lightly in pursuing questions about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Sessions said the facts of the FBI situation don’t yet rise to the level of demanding a special counsel, but Mr. Huber is as close as can be.

"He will have the full authority of a federal prosecutor," said Richard Painter, former chief ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush. "If he looks at this and finds someone in the DOJ lied to a government official, he would be able to convene a grand jury, compel testimony and even prosecute them."

By appointing an active federal prosecutor ‐ in this case one first nominated by President Obama, and kept on by President Trump ‐ Mr. Sessions may also deflect criticism that the review is a partisan attempt to undermine the other special counsel, Robert Mueller, who is probing the Trump campaign’s interactions with Russia in 2016.

Happy Easter and Passover To all the Christian and Jewish 'Burgers
May your day be blessed and full of family and love

President Trump released a video address Friday in recognition of the holidays of Easter and Passover, saying that Americans "praise the Heavenly Father for the blessings of freedom and the gift of eternal life."

"During the sacred holiday of Passover, Jewish families around the world give thanks to God for liberating the Jewish people from bondage in Egypt and delivering them to the promised land of Israel," Trump said.

The 2018 week of Passover begins Friday, and Easter is Sunday.

"For Christians, we remember the suffering and death of God's only son," Trump said, "and his glorious resurrection on the third day."

"On Easter Sunday, we proclaim with joy: 'Christ is risen!' " he added. "Both of these sacred celebrations remind us that God redeems the world."

#3  Thank you for posting this, Frank G. I’ve been a bit distracted, what with Mr. Wife retiring at the end of the day this past Friday — I only noticed that it was almost Passover on Thursday, so I gave up on having a Seder this year. God will understand, I’m sure.

Cute, Procopius2k.

It’s unusual for the holidays to be quite so close together, given how the Jewish lunar calendar wanders — that extra month every eleven years or so makes things interesting. But that makes this year extra nice for those of us with friends’n’relations in both camps. ;-)

#11  TW. Mr Wife's first simple cooking recipe (guaranteed to make him feel proud as it makes really fluffy rice.)

Really Fluffy Rice

2 cups of water in a small pot with 1 tablespoon butter and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

Bring to boil.

Add the rice to the water, 1 cup, lower the heat and put the lid on the pot.

Let simmer for 20 minutes (do not take the lid off or the rice will not get fluffy).

(I add a couple of small bullion cubes for chicken or beef flavored rice.)

Will supply instructions on how to do the laundry later (poor guy ;-)).

#12  You are kindness itself, Ulaigum Ebbineng7056, but the first time Mr. Wife and I hung out he made me Chinese stir fry... and he spent eleven years developing new and improved laundry detergents for markets around the world.

I’m looking forward to him cutting up a couple of pounds of chuck so I can make goulash — it’s been a while since I’ve had enough energy. And I’m very glad he’s taken over ironing and grocery shopping, as those used to be his responsibilities back when we both were in paid employment.

Caravan of 1,000 Illegal Aliens Forces Trump to Talk Tougher With Mexico
[Townhall] Could a recent Buzzfeed news story force America to get even tougher with Mexico due to illegal immigration? Based on President Trump's tweets today, that answer is yes.

On Friday March 30th, BuzzFeed's Adolfo Flores documented shocking photos of more than 1,000 migrants from Central America marching through the streets Mexico on their way to the United States border. While the fact that migrants come through Mexico was not unsurprising, the sheer mass of people and the blatant unwillingness of Mexico's immigration agents to even bother with the problem was truly dismaying.

From BuzzFeed:
Taking a drag from her cigarette, a Mexican immigration agent looked out toward a caravan of migrants that grew larger with each step they took on the two-lane highway.

When the agent, who'd covered her uniform with an orange and white shawl, learned that the Central American migrants heading her way numbered more than 1,000, she took off for the restaurant across the street.

"I'm going to have a relaxing Coke," she told BuzzFeed News.

For five days now hundreds of Central Americans ‐ children, women, and men, most of them from Honduras ‐ have boldly crossed immigration checkpoints, military bases, and police in a desperate, sometimes chaotic march toward the United States. Despite their being in Mexico without authorization, no one has made any effort to stop them.

Organized by a group of volunteers called Pueblos Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, the caravan is intended to help migrants safely reach the United States, bypassing not only authorities who would seek to deport them, but gangs and cartels who are known to assault vulnerable migrants.

Organizers like Rodrigo Abeja hope that the sheer size of the crowd will give immigration authorities and criminals pause before trying to stop them.

"If we all protect each other we'll get through this together," Abeja yelled through a loudspeaker on the morning they left Tapachula, on Mexico's border with Guatemala, for the nearly monthlong trek.

When they get to the US, they hope American authorities will grant them asylum or, for some, be absent when they attempt to cross the border illegally. More likely is that it will set up an enormous challenge to the Trump administration's immigration policies and its ability to deal with an organized group of migrants numbering in the hundreds.

The number of people who showed up to travel with the caravan caught organizers by surprise, and has overwhelmed the various towns they've stopped in to spend the night. Pueblos Sin Fronteras counted about 1,200 people on the first day.

About 80% of them are from Honduras. Many said they are fleeing poverty, but also political unrest and violence that followed the swearing in of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández after a highly contested election last year. The group often breaks into chants of "out with JOH." They also chant "we aren't immigrants, we're international workers" and "the people united will never be defeated."
Apparently, this type of commute is the preferred method of illegal aliens because it guarantees safety in numbers.

A group which deserves the full attention of the US government. This stunt cannot be legal, which means everyone involved is part of a conspiracy. It likely violates any number of international treaties -- and the ones I'd look at most closely are those involving human trafficking.

About 75 Rockledge High School students walk out of class to support Second Amendment
h/t Instapundit
A group of students from Rockledge High School in Brevard County briefly walked out of class Friday to show their support for the Second Amendment.

About 75 students, according to a head count by school administrators, walked onto the school's track carrying the American flag and signs that said "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and "I support the right to bear arms." The event lasted about 20 minutes and then students returned to class.

The demonstration was organized by Chloe Deaton, a sophomore, and Anna Delaney, a junior, who are part of Rockledge High's Criminal Justice and Legal Studies Academy.

London murder rate beats New York as stabbings surge
h/t Instapundit
[TheTimes] London overtook New York in murders for the first time in modern history in February as the capital endured a dramatic surge in knife crime.

Fifteen people were murdered in the capital, against 14 in New York. Both cities have almost exactly the same population.

London murders for March are also likely to exceed or equal New York’s. By late last night there had been 22 killings in the capital, according to the Metropolitan police, against 21 in the US city.

Eight Londoners were murdered between March 14 and March 20 alone and the total number of London murders, even excluding victims of terrorism, has risen by 38% since 2014.

Head of DOJ death penalty removed for promoting ‘sexualized environment'
So, this POS has been around since the Scandal Free™ Obama/Holder/Lynch era
The head of the federal Department of Justice's death penalty unit has been removed from his job after being investigated at least 12 times on charges of sexism and favoritism, according to reports.
Only 12?
Kevin Carwile had helmed the group, which assists the Attorney General in evaluating potential capital punishment cases, since 2011.

Current and former employees filed multiple grievances against Carwile and a deputy for promoting a "sexualized environment" and for a pattern of biased assignments that disadvantaged female subordinates, the New York Times reported Saturday.

In one case, employees alleged, Carwile stood idly by as the deputy, Gwynn Kinsey, groped a low-level assistant against her will ‐ and then instructed employees who witnessed the abuse not to speak about it.

The complaints against him began in 2013 and continued through last year.

Carwile had been bounced from his role as the head of the much larger DOJ gangs unit as part of the fallout from the "Fast and Furious" gun-walking scandal in 2011.

Trump appears to end DACA negotiations as migrant caravan marches toward US
[Washington Examiner] President Trump appeared to kill the prospect of making a deal on the Deferred Actions for Childhood Arrivals program as a caravan of thousands of migrant workers make their way through Mexico toward the U.S.

Trump, after wishing the country a happy Easter holiday, tweeted a plea to Republican senators to change the rules of the upper chamber to pass tough new immigration laws.

"Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. ’Caravans’ coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL!" Trump tweeted.

#5  Time to go read Camp of Saints, if you haven't already. It's really quite prescient for something written back in '73. From le Wiki:

The Camp of the Saints is a 1973 French novel by author and explorer Jean Raspail. The novel depicts the destruction of Western civilization through Third World mass immigration to France and the West

Raspail has said his inspiration came while at the French Riviera in 1971, as he was looking out at the Mediterranean.

What if they were to come? I did not know who "they" were, but it seemed inevitable to me that the numberless disinherited people of the South would, like a tidal wave, set sail one day for this opulent shore, our fortunate country’s wide-gaping frontier.

Paddleboaters at DC Cherry Blossom Festival find dead body in Tidal Basin
[Washington Examiner] Paddleboaters at DC Cherry Blossom Festival find dead body in Tidal Basin.

A body was seen being taken into the small boat. As the boat made its way back to shore, the body that had been pulled from the water was covered in a yellow blanket.

The National Park Service told the Washington Examiner the D.C. Metro Police Department is overseeing the investigation into the incident.

D.C. police did not return multiple requests for comment and one outlet reported police would not comment on the cause of death or identity of the man.

The paddleboat services were shut down within an hour of the recovery.

The incident comes in the midst of the National Cherry Blossom Festival at the Tidal Basin and the final days before the trees reach peak bloom.

A similar incident took place in April 2013, when a corpse was found in the water of the Tidal Basin.

Yesterday, at a press conference in Moscow, Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation spokesperson Alexei Obmanov shared images and documents that conclusively prove a US SR-71 Blackbird spyplane was downed close to a remote Siberian village in 1983.
It's very possible they have parts of a D-21 drone, which was supposed to piggyback on the Blackbird but never quite worked like that - it ended up being launched from international airspace by B-52s. One of them may have ended up inside the USSR, that story is unclear.
According to Obmanov, the aircraft was intercepted by a pair of Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO) MiG-31 interceptors. The intruding US aircraft was tracked for 93 miles (150 km), and five radio warnings issued, before the Soviet aircraft opened fire. Three missiles were fired, with the second two hitting and destroying the American aircraft. The two aircrew successfully ejected from the aircraft. The wreckage, which was recovered from the Siberian village of Durakovo, was sent to the Gromov Flight Research Institute 25 miles (40 km) south-east of Moscow for analysis.
Ummmmmm, no. Way too many recorded instances of Blackbirds simply walking away from threats, and at the time there was nothing in the Soviet arsenal that could catch it.
Cover up
According to Obmanov, a frantic diplomatic effort following the crash saw both sides agree to not publicly acknowledge the incident, an agreement that lasted 35 years. It was feared by both sides that the incident, which occurred at the height of Cold War tensions, could be potentially inflammatory.
...So they kept THIS quiet but didn't say anything when we landed on them with both feet for KAL 007 that same year? There's a word for that, and it rhymes with 'full kit'.
According to Ben Shearer, from the ANOITO Defence Research Institute,
A defense research institute so important that it apparently has zero internet presence - Google shows no mention of it.
the deal was mutually beneficial as it also cloaked the alleged 'Submarine 545' incident - 'Submarine 545' refers to a long-denied incident of a Soviet submarine exercise that went badly wrong, and may have inadvertently released radioactive material off the coast of New York in the early 1980s (though no firm proof of the submarine incident has come to light).
Ah-hah - a nonexistent shootdown is hidden so as to keep secret something else that didn't happen! My GAWD, these people are fiendishly clever. Wheels within wheels, y'know...
The pilot and reconnaissance systems officer (who remain unnamed) of the downed SR-71 were returned to the United States in 1984 in exchange for two Soviet diplomats arrested for espionage in 1975.

According to one US source we spoke to, "This is stunning news... a Blackbird loss has never been acknowledged.
BECAUSE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN, YOU MORON.
As stunning as the loss itself is the mutual secrecy arrangements...I am now wondering what else is out there." In a time of mutual distrust between Washington and Moscow it is clear that the revelation is intended to embarrass the US.

The US Department of Defense has not commented on the revelation.
Because they were too busy laughing their backsides off.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
CDC: Drug Overdoses (not AR-15's) Killed 63,632 Americans In 2016
[Hot Air] There were estimates last year that the number of drug overdose deaths in 2016 might be as high as 60,000 but the actual numbers, released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are even worse:

The sharp increase in deaths from cocaine and other drugs is believed to be, in part, a result of drug suppliers mixing illicit fentanyl into the supply, thereby increasing the chance of an overdose. The geographic distribution of overdose deaths doesn’t focus on one region of the country, though the specific drug causing the increases varies from state to state. The highest adjusted death rate was in West Virginia. The lowest rate was in Texas.

GoFundMe For Fired FBI Deputy Andrew McCabe Hits 400K
[The Federalist] Friends of McCabe are raising funds to help him deal with the legal fallout from an 'extended humiliation' at the hands of President Trump.

The official GoFundMe account for fired FBI Deputy Andrew McCabe has reached $400,000, less than a day after his friends set up the page to help him deal with what they call an "extended humiliation" at the hands of the Trump administration.

Some 10,000 people have participated so far in the crowdfunding effort, which will help pay for McCabe’s legal defense. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired him just days before he was slated to retire, dispossessing him of his pension and benefits, on the grounds that he was not candid under oath. McCabe denies he was dishonest, and plans to fight the loss of benefits.

His friends gushed over his "unblemished" career at the FBI on the GoFundMe page, and characterized the powerful D.C. insider as the victim of a "completely unjustified" firing by a cruel administration.

Nearly 100 MS-13 Gang Members Arrested in Sting Were Resettled Across U.S. as ‘Unaccompanied Minors'
[Breitbart] Nearly 100 recently arrested MS-13 gang members arrived in the United States by crossing through the U.S.-Mexico border as "unaccompanied minors" and then getting resettled throughout the country by the federal government.
About 475 gang members have been arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency’s "Operation Matador" sting, with 99 of those gang members arrested having arrived in the U.S. as "unaccompanied minors."

Of the 99 MS-13 gang members who entered the country as unaccompanied minors, 64 of them were granted Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ), which acts as a quasi-amnesty program for young illegal aliens who cross the southern border.

Europe
Europeans love war – must we?
[IsraelNationalNews] At least to this observer, UK prime minister Theresa May has been sounding a touch hysterical ‐ or maybe it’s just me who finds this getting out of hand.

She’s now got the United States backed into taking punitive action against Russia. This, as we expel 60 Russian diplomats as part of a united front that includes 14 European countries, all of whom say that, "It’s time to do something about Russia." The pundits agree. All of the same mind that, "It’s time to put Putin in his place" ...and "Enough is enough."

Enough of what? Seems that the Russians poisoned a couple of dissident Russians somewhere in England, Salisbury to be exact, so this means? This, read all about it, means war.

We are not quite there yet, but it sounds like somebody thinks a Cold War is fine, but that a Hot War would be better, as we wrote in "Cool-hand Trump vs war-hawk Dems"

Once again, just this morning, we find May addressing Parliament with words to die for, like this ‐ "It [the alleged poisoning] is part of a pattern of increasingly aggressive Russian behavior."

For aggressive behavior off the scale, she might consider what the poison-hearted Palestinian Arabs keep doing to the Israelis in "Days of Rage" ‐ often with British and EU approval.

I get it that Putin has schemes not in our favor, sure, but what’s alarming is the haste to take up battle stations that can only push Putin to the brink...over what is not that clear.

"A clear breach," May goes on to say, as a summons to the world to get tough.

Even though, by the way, there is no proof that the Russians did anything. So maybe it’s simply a time for war. The Europeans need it every so often ‐ quite often in fact.

Most times the entire continent gets into the act ‐ seldom is it one on one ‐ and usually the firing begins over not much. I’m thinking WWI over some archduke getting assassinated in Sarajevo. Rather than get even with the assassin, everybody go home and call it a day, four years and three months they fought, 32 countries, leaving behind 41 million dead.

To my thinking, one archduke wasn’t worth all that trouble.

...But just because the Europeans tend to go brothel now and again, I don’t see where this is any of our business. Unless Russia actually invades. Then, okay, we come to the rescue, as usual. But this is not Churchill warning about Hitler and the Wehrmacht. This is May about an alleged poisoning of two people in Salisbury.

Two people and they aren’t even archdukes.

Since when did our own people ‐ experts, all ‐ become so trigger-happy? Itchy-fingered Democrats, of course they want war with Russia.

They’ve been saying it, or hinting it, ever since Trump got elected and to prove that he is no friend of Putin’s, demand he turn hawkish and damn the consequences.

Trump was put on the spot..." stand with our allies" ...or stand apart...so he had no choice.

He had to act, but reluctantly, since, as we’ve been saying, Trump has been the cool-hand in a room full of hot heads.

That one thing can lead to another with 4,000 nuclear warheads standing by on either side...and the Cuban Missile Crisis a nightmare to remember...few realize the bell tolls for thee.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Denying Genetics Isn't Shutting Down Racism, It's Fueling It
h/t Instapundit
[NYMag] Last weekend, a rather seismic op-ed appeared in the New York Times, and it was for a while one of the most popular pieces in the newspaper. It’s by David Reich, a professor of genetics at Harvard, who carefully advanced the case that there are genetic variations between subpopulations of humans, that these are caused, as in every other species, by natural selection, and that some of these variations are not entirely superficial and do indeed overlap with our idea of race. This argument should not be so controversial ‐ every species is subject to these variations ‐ and yet it is. For many on the academic and journalistic left, genetics are deemed largely irrelevant when it comes to humans. Our large brains and the societies we have constructed with them, many argue, swamp almost all genetic influences.

Humans, in this view, are the only species on Earth largely unaffected by recent (or ancient) evolution, the only species where, for example, the natural division of labor between male and female has no salience at all, the only species, in fact, where natural variations are almost entirely social constructions, subject to reinvention. We are, in this worldview, alone on the planet, born as blank slates, to be written on solely by culture.
In short: The people who proclaim their allegiance to Science and Evolution the loudest, have less grasp of the scientific results in evolutionary research than an average Jewish/Christian/Muslim fundamentalist.
All differences between men and women are a function of this social effect; as are all differences between the races. If, in the aggregate, any differences in outcome between groups emerge, it is entirely because of oppression, patriarchy, white supremacy, etc. And it is a matter of great urgency that we use whatever power we have to combat these inequalities.

The Teenage Demagogues
h/t Instapundit
[NationalReview] All you needed to know about student activist David Hogg’s speech at the "March for Our Lives" in Washington, D.C., over the weekend was that he affixed a price tag on the microphone to symbolize how much National Rifle Association money Senator Marco Rubio took for the lives of students in Florida.

The stunt wasn’t out of place. Indeed, it perfectly encapsulated the braying spirit of the student gun-control advocacy in the wake of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.
As Instapundit said once: "In the future everyone will be H*tler - for 15 minutes.". I foresee considerably more than 15 minutes for young David Hogg. In fact, I'm willing to bet, we'll be hearing this name a lot in the years to come.

#8  Dear Parkland Parents: It’s Time For You To Step In

...
In roughly six weeks, we’ve come to know Parkland students David Hogg, Emma Gonzalez, Cameron Kasky, and to a lesser extent (because mainstream media doesn’t appreciate his pro-2A stance), Kyle Kashuv. These teenagers have been thrust into the media spotlight because youth makes for an ideal poster child. Energy and a fresh face can do much to advance a narrative, regardless of content.

We have seen exactly this in the past few weeks. There is a sense that because one has gone through a crisis, one has the expertise to discuss the issue – almost continually – in the public square.

I have no problem with these kids talking about their experiences and demanding change. I have every problem with the free pass they’ve been given as they label NRA supporting legislators and actual members “kid killers”, among other things. I have a problem with their lack of basic knowledge about guns and gun laws while chiding Second Amendment supporters for possessing weapons and using them in accordance with established law. But I have already written about those frustrations.
...
The parents of these newly-minted anti-gun crusaders only want this to keep going, no matter what it looks like or costs their kids in the future. They don’t care that they’re pushing their kids onto the national stage when they’re not intellectually or emotionally mature enough. They’re political stage moms/dads who want to live vicariously through their activist offspring.

And it is grotesque.

Horror On Streets Of Germany: State Of Emergency Declared As 80 Men Brawl With Machetes

Police were called to the Altmarkt area of the city over reports of the mass bawl. Officers used CS gas to control the brawling men.

The scores of men were also using telescopic batons in the fight in Druisburg, which is on the west of Germany.

Police said they were spat at and had objects hurled at them.

Around 50 people were locked away

and onlookers captured the brutality in shocking photos.

Those arrested refused to explain what sparked the fight and 30 people were later released.

A police official told the newspaper Der Westen: "There are three rival groups. It may be a conflict between Turks, Lebanese and Kurds.

"Unlike with a demonstration of that size, we do not have a contact person, nobody wants to talk to the police."

He added: "The officers got the situation under control before it escalated."

Betwwen 20 to 30 people were on each side of the fight in Monday night's incident and police said the majority of those arrested were from a Lebanese background.

The police front man said similar incidents had taken place the previous night and the week before. Police are looking into whether there is a connection.

Four Syrians held for Molotov attack on mosque in Germany
[TheLocal] Four Syrians have been locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in Germany on suspicion of attempted murder and arson for their alleged roles in a Molotov cocktail attack on a mosque frequented by Ottoman Turkish Moslems, police said on Thursday.

The attack in the southern city of Ulm on March 19 caused only material damage and the eight people inside the building at the time were unharmed, local police said in a joint statement with Stuttgart prosecutors.

The suspects, aged 18 to 27, were arrested on Wednesday. One of the men has already confessed to the crime, according to the statement.

The 3 am (0100 GMT) attack saw several Molotov cocktails lobbed at the building, one of which started a fire that was quickly put out by police.

Prosecutors said they suspect the attack "may have been politically motivated", but according to DPA news agency they declined to comment on reports that it was an act of retaliation over the Ottoman Turkish offensive in the Syrian enclave of Afrin.

"The investigation, including into the motive of the Syrians... is ongoing," the statement read.

Several mosques, cultural centres and shops frequented by Germany's Ottoman Turkish community have been targeted in a string of attacks in recent weeks amid tensions over The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
's actions against Kurdish militia in Afrin.

The Kurdish Community in Germany group earlier this month sharply condemned the attacks as well as social media calls that were "urging Kurdish youths to employ violence against Ottoman Turkish institutions".

Germany is home to three million ethnic Turks and hundreds of thousands of Kurds.

Algerian Illegal Migrant Arrested After Italian Church Attempted Terror Attack
[Breitbart] A 22-year-old illegal Algerian immigrant was tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
on a charge of attempted terrorism after trying to drive a stolen car into a crowd in front of the Shrine of Pompeii Basilica, only to be stopped by concrete bollards.

What an idiot. The product of a tightly braided family tree, no doubt.
The attempted attacker, 22-year-old migrant Othman Jridi, told police his motivation for the failed attack saying, "I did it in the name of Allah," Corriere del Mezzogiorno reports.

Jridi came to Italia after being expelled from La Belle France and was also told to the leave the country by the police chief of Cagliari, yet remained in in the country.

Judge Fernanda Iannone, an expert on international terrorism, agreed to allow prosecution against the failed asylum seeker to go ahead and ordered him to be put in pre-trial detention due to the severity of the crime.

The Algerian was also charged and found guilty of the two lesser offences of stealing a car and lying to public officials. According to police, after being arrested Jridi lied about his identity and gave Sherlocks the address of one of his friends rather than his own.

When police took him to the address he gave, Jridi is said to have told his friend, "You say I live here, otherwise they will arrest me," in Arabic. Judge Iannone handed down a two and a half year sentence for the minor charges and passed on all of the information to the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office who will prosecute the terrorism charges.

A report from the Economist magazine claimed that Italia’s long-standing battle with the Mafia as well as experience in dealing with terrorism in past decades has made authorities much better equipped to deal with radical Islamic terror than many other European counterparts.

Despite the success, many in Italia are on high alert over Easter weekend including the Vatican whose security has been placed on high alert to protect the projected large crowds of pilgrims and worshippers from attack.

Zimbabwe: Zapu Says Mugabe's U.S.$10 Million Package Equals Asset Stripping
[All Africa] Government's $10 million package to former President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. Dumped in November 2017 when the Missus decided she wanted to be president, and opposed heer might against Crocodile Mnangawa Important safety tip: If your opponent goes by the name Crocodile andf your title is Shopper in Chief let him win....
is nothing short of "asset stripping", Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa has said.
Zapu is back. I was wondering what happened to them.
In his party manifesto ahead of elections expected later this year, Dabengwa a former Home Affairs minister in Mugabe's administration said his party will introduce a leaner government with less concentration of power on "one person".

"Currently, the executive authority is excessively centralized in the person of the president. This enables the president to introduce instruments such as the jaw-dropping exit package offered to the former president, Robert Mugabe, which amounted to asset-stripping from our broke country and bleeding of citizens and future generations," said Dabengwa.

A wartime hero in which he served as Zapu's intelligence supremo, Dabengwa who walked out of Zanu PF to revive his old party in 2009, said the current system of governance gave those in power room to engage in patronage politics.

"In addition, the current system of appointment of ministers is characterized by nepotism and patronage. The result is a bloated government that gobbles up a huge part of the national fiscus," he said.

Dabengwa added: "A Zapu government will establish a lean executive based on the principle of collective responsibility and proper accountability to Parliament and the people; make sure colossal long-tern burdening of citizens is scrutinized and approved by Parliament; streamline and restructure the entire governmental system to ensure efficiency and effectiveness".

Since he revived the party, Dabengwa has remained out of Parliament and will be contesting as a presidential candidate.

Dabengwa recently walked out of a coalition with former Energy minister Elton Mangoma with whom he had, along with other small parties, formed the Coalition of Democrats (CODE).

Israel Prepares For Weeks Of Military And International Tension
[Jpost] Jerusalem rejects accusations of ’disproportionate’ force, says Gazoo fence separates state from terrorists.

Israel is bracing for several weeks of military and diplomatic confrontation that began with Friday’s march in the Gazoo Strip that left 16 Paleostinians dead and hundreds more injured and is expected to continue until May 15, which the Paleostinians mark as Nakba Day, the "Day of Catastrophe" marking Israel’s birth.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night congratulated the IDF for defending the borders and making it possible for the country’s citizens to celebrate the Passover Seder quietly.

The Grand Turk
Debka: Tit for Tat
[Debka] The US liquidates its two main Mid East air bases at Incirlik and Al-Udeid

Plans to speed up the transfer of the big US CENTCOM base in Qatar to Saudi Arabia were approved by President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Muhamed bin Salman when they met at the White House on Tuesday, March 20. This is an earthshaking event for the Middle East, which far transcends US-Saudi relations, say DEBKAfile’s military sources.
They also disclose that, despite repeated denials, the Trump administration is in the process of another momentous move, packing up its air force and quitting Incirlik in southern Turkey, the biggest air base in the region.
The two moves are interconnected. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has become an avid supporter of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is locked in a feud with the Saudi rulers. Turkey recently established a large military base in the oil emirate. The Saudi Crown Prince and his ally, the UAE ruler Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, are close friends and President Trump’s leading allies in the Gulf region. The two Gulf rulers view the Turkish president and Qatari emir as arch-foes.

The relocation of the two US bases stems additionally from the sharp reduction in fighting against ISIS in both Iraq and Syria. There is therefore less need for US air force operations in those parts. The US facilities and aircraft based in Incirlik are already being shifted to bases in East Europe, our military sources report. The Pentagon is also looking at Andravida in southern Greece as a replacement for Incirlik.

US installations are being shipped out of Al-Udaid in Qatar to the Prince Sultan Air base in central Saudi Arabia near Al Kharj, which lies 77km south of Riyadh. Fifteen years ago, this base was the main US air force hub for the oil-rich Gulf region, home at times to more than 60,000 US service personnel. When the US invaded Iraq in 2003 and captured Baghdad, the Saudi rulers insisted on the evacuation of US troops. Now they are returning.
The relocation of the two big US air bases in the Middle East is bound to shake up the region’s strategic dynamic. American soldiers are now in place to defend the Saudi kingdom. This will no doubt convey a clear message to Iran that the Trump administration has the back of the royal regime in Riyadh.

[AnNahar] The U.N. Security Council has blacklisted 27 ships, 21 companies and a businessman for helping North Korea circumvent sanctions, as the United States keeps up pressure on Pyongyang despite its recent overtures toward talks, diplomats said.

Acting on a request from the United States, it was the largest-ever package of sanctions designations on North Korea approved by a council committee, diplomats said.

The move is part of a global crackdown on the smuggling of North Korean commodities in violation of U.N. sanctions resolutions, which were adopted in response to Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests.

Captured ‘Jihadi John’ Cell Members Complain About Losing UK Citizenship

execution cell have complained about being stripped of their UK citizenship, claiming they have been denied the right to a fair trial.

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces captured Alexanda Amon Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh in January in eastern Syria, and they are currently being held in the north of the country by Kurdish forces.

Their cell became notorious for capturing, torturing, and murdering Western hostages, including American journalists and aid workers, and was seemingly led by the infamous ’Jihad John’ ‐ real name Mohammed Emwazi.

Now, in an interview with the News Agency that Dare Not be Named from captivity, they spoke of their membership of Islamic State, but denied membership of the brutal execution cell.

Elsheikh, from White City in west London, called the allegations "propaganda" and another called the killings "regrettable".

They argued that press stories about ’the Beatles’ were fabricated and used as a pretext to have them killed ‐ as ’Jihadi John’ was in a dronezap. "No fair trial, when I am ’the Beatle’ in the media. No fair trial," Elsheikh said.

He claimed the British government’s decision in February to strip them of citizenship was "illegal", exposing them to "rendition and torture", Elsheikh said, "being taken to any foreign land and treated in anyway and having nobody to vouch for you".

"When you have these two guys who don’t even have any citizenship... if we just disappear one day, where is my mom going to go and say where is my son," he added.

Asked about the beheadings of American journalist James Foley and other victims, Kotey said many in Islamic State "would have disagreed" with the killings "on the grounds that there is probably more benefit in them being political prisoners".

"As for my position, I didn’t see any benefit. It was something that was regrettable," he added, before blaming Western governments for failing to negotiate and offer ransoms.

Africa Subsaharan
Four teen girl suicide bombers launch deadly attack in Nigeria
[ENCA] Four teenage girl jacket wallahs have killed two people in multiple attacks in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, residents said Saturday, in the latest assault since the government announced it was in ceasefire talks with Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
The suspected Boko Haram attack took place late Friday in the northeast Borno state capital of Maiduguri, the epicentre of the group's Islamist insurgency.

The girls, estimated to be between the ages of 13 and 18, attacked the Zawuya settlement on the outskirts of Maiduguri, killing two people, residents told AFP.

"We lost two people, a woman and a boy, in two of the four suicide kabooms," Zawuya resident Musa Haruna Isa said.

One of the bombers blew up while trying to scale a low mud wall outside a house that starting crumbling and detonated her boom belt, killing the boy, Isa said.

"One of them went kaboom! near an open-air mosque, injuring one person," he said, adding that another bomber "panicked from the kabooms from her colleagues and squeezed the trigger in the open, killing only herself."

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
police said that just one person died in the attack.

"They (bombers) detonated the explosives killing themselves and one other person... 13 persons were maimed and were taken to a hospital where they are responding to treatment," Maiduguri police said in a statement.

The attack highlighted the challenge the government faces in reaching a ceasefire agreement with the fractionalised Boko Haram.

Last week, when more than 100 schoolgirls were returned to Dapchi after being kidnapped by the jihadist group, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said his government was offering amnesty to "repentant" jihadists.

But security bigshots cautioned that reaching any agreement with the group will be difficult, as it is split into competing factions with different goals.

The Islamic State

-affiliated faction reportedly in talks with the government is led by Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi and is known for attacks on military targets, while another faction led by Abubakar Shekau
... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ...
is notorious for suicide kabooms killing civilians.

Zawuya, a settlement of people displaced by Boko Haram mostly from Rann, a town on the remote northeast border with Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, lies close to the Muna Garage area, home to some 40,000 internally displaced people.

Both camps have been repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram attacks.

Indian ISIS recruits likely killed in Afghanistan airstrike
Good.
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A group of Indian nationals who were recruited by the turbans in ISIS ranks have likely been killed in an Arclight airstrike in Afghanistan, it has been reported.

According to the Indian officials, reports regarding the killing of four ISIS recruits hailing originally from Kerala have emerged.

The police chief of Kerala Loknath Behera has told news hounds that the four individuals along with a child have likely been killed in a dronezap in Afghanistan.

He has cited preliminary reports received by the authorities and added that the reports could not be verified but investigations are underway in this regard.

The individuals had reportedly visited Syria in 2016 in a bid to take part in terrorist related activities in ISIS ranks.

This comes as counter-terrorism operations and airstrikes are underway against the terror group in a number of the provinces of Afghanistan.

The Afghan officials have in the past confirmed the killing of imported muscle among the ISIS ranks in Afghanistan but they have so far not commented regarding the killing of Indian nationals so far.

EU calls for probe into Gaza protest
[DW] The EU has followed the UN and called for a probe into the deaths of 15 Palestinian protesters in Gaza. The EU's Federica Mogherini said a continuation of "peace talks towards a two-state solution" is needed.

"The EU mourns the loss of life … The use of live ammunition should, in particular, be part of an independent and transparent investigation," Mogherini said in a statement. "While Israel has the right to protect its borders, the use of force must be proportionate at all times," she continued.

Terror Networks
Terrorist Decision Making in the Context of Risk, Attack Planning, and Attack Commission
[TandFOnline] ABSTRACT

Terrorists from a wide array of ideological influences and organizational structures consider security and risk on a continuous and rational basis. The rationality of terrorism has been long noted of course but studies tended to focus on organizational reasoning behind the strategic turn toward violence. A more recent shift within the literature has examined rational behaviors that underpin the actual tactical commission of a terrorist offense. This article is interested in answering the following questions: What does the cost–benefit decision look like on a single operation? What does the planning process look like? How do terrorists choose between discrete targets? What emotions are felt during the planning and operational phases? What environmental cues are utilized in the decision-making process? Fortunately, much insight is available from the wider criminological literature where studies often provide offender-oriented accounts of the crime commission process. We hypothesize similar factors take place in terrorist decision making and search for evidence within a body of terrorist autobiographies.

Germany accepts 500 more Yezidi women and girls freed from ISIS: MP
[Rudaw] ERBIL, Kurdistan Region ‐ As part of a program established between the Kurdistan Region and Germany, 500 Yezidi women and girls once held captive by ISIS will be sent to the European country, a Yezidi MP in the Iraqi parliament said.

Vian Dakhil, the only Yezidi in the Iraqi parliament, claimed many of the women and girls have been relocated by runaway ISIS fighters to other Iraqi provinces, including Baghdad.

During the first phase, 1,200 Yezidi women were sent to Germany. After going through rehabilitation programs, the former captives are free to decide whether they would prefer to stay in Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
or return to the Kurdistan Region.

"In the second phase, 500 Yezidi girls and women, freed from ISIS will be sent to Germany," Dakhil told Rudaw.

La Belle France is also dedicating resources to helping the Yezidi women and girls, of whom 3,100 are still missing, Dakhil revealed.

She claimed that some of the Yezidis have been transferred by ISIS fighters to other Iraqi cities, including the capital.

"ISIS is present inside Baghdad. Some of the kidnapped girls and women have been transferred to Baghdad and other Iraqi provinces," she claimed.

"Not only in Saladin, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and Anbar, but they [ISIS] are also present in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities and that the Yezidi girls and boys have not only been taken to Syria and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
, but also the Iraqi provinces as it is being disclosed bit by bit."

She recounted the story of a Yezidi woman, aged 20, who has recently been discovered in Baghdad. The woman had informed her neighbors she was a Kurd and Yezidi.

After the neighbors informed police of her story, the murderous Moslem holding her was incarcerated
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
Dakhil confirmed the murderous Moslem has been captured by police, saying "we are trying to bring back the girl."

She claimed that Yezidis are still being bought and sold in Syria and Turkey.

Asked by Rudaw whether any budget had been allocated to pay ransoms, she said "the Iraqi government earmarked three billion dinars in ransom to help return the Yezidi women and girls. Except for that, no other amount has been allocated."

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani established an office in 2014 to help rescue the Yezidis kidnapped by ISIS. More than 3,000 Yezidis have been rescued, according to the KRG.

More than 6,000 members of the religious minority were taken captive by ISIS when they swept through northern Iraq, committing genocide against the Yezidis. Nearly half of the abductees remain unaccounted for.

Peshmerga says PKK has not left Sinjar, raising tensions with Iraqi forces
[ALMASDARNEWS] A representative of the Peshmerga, the Kurdish military forces in Iraqi Kurdistan, told Sputnik that claims by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) about having retreated from Sinjar were actually a ruse.

In Iraq, the issue of the PKK leaving Sinjar is still on the agenda. A number of key political and military figures, including an Iraqi army front man, an al-Hashd al-Sha’abi militia representative, and Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Ibadi, have said that the PKK has completely retreated from the Sinjar region near the northern border of Iraq, with government forces and Peshmerga units taking their place.

However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
Xelil Shirvan, a Peshmerga representative in Sinjar, told Sputnik that the PKK has not, in fact, leave the area.

"The PKK leadership claimed it left Sinjar, but in reality it is not so. They made this statement to confuse the citizens of Sinjar and prevent a Ottoman Turkish attack in the area. There are still some 500 snuffies of the PKK in the Sinjar mountains. In addition, there are some 2,000 Yazidi fighters of the Sinjar Resistance Forces, which is a division of PKK, despite having a different flag," Shirvan said.

He also underscored that there are rising tensions between Iraqi government forces located in Sinjar and several Peshmerga units.

"There are rising tensions between the Iraqi army and units under the command of Kasim Shisho, the commander of the Peshmerga in Sinjar. The Iraqi army intended to take Sherefedin ‐ a major center of the Yazidi population in Sinjar. However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
Peshmerga forces under Shisho’s command stood up against it and stated their readiness to protect Sherefedin. This was the reason for rising tensions," he said.

Mali war crimes suspect in custody, says International Criminal Court
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The International Criminal Court on Saturday said it has taken into custody at its detention center in the Netherlands of a Malian man accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The suspect, identified by the court as Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohammed Ag Mahmoud, was indicted for crimes allegedly committed as de-facto chief of Islamic police in Timbuktu in 2012 and 2013 including destroying cultural monuments and enforcing policies that led to sexual enslavement of women and girls.

The detention of Al Hassan is a boost for ICC prosecutors.

The only other suspect enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in Mali’s conflict, Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi, pleaded guilty to destruction of cultural heritage for his participation in smashing mausoleums. He was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2017 after apologizing for his actions, and could appear as a witness against Al Hassan.

Landmark case
Victims’ groups had been critical of the court for the limited scope of al-Mahdi’s indictment, though his case was widely viewed as a landmark because it was the first time a person has been convicted of a war crime solely for destruction of cultural artifacts.

In Al Hassan’s case, judges said prosecutors had presented enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant for crimes against humanity including "torture, rape and sexual slavery; persecution of the inhabitants of Timbuktu on religious and gender grounds; and other inhumane acts."

Al Hassan will have an initial court appearance next week at which he will be informed of the allegations outlined in his arrest warrant. He is not yet required to enter a plea.

Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said in a statement she had asked judges to issue an arrest warrant for Al Hassan on March 20, and the warrant was issued under seal on March 27. Malian and Dutch authorities cooperated in the handover.

Bensouda, who has been criticized for obtaining few convictions during her tenure, said her selection of Al Hassan for prosecution showed her commitment "to bring forward cases only guided and built on a strong evidentiary foundation."

She said it also signaled her intent "to address the untold suffering inflicted upon the Malian population and what they hold dear as a people."

Syrian army command says it has regained most of eastern Ghouta
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Syrian army command said on Saturday it had regained most of the towns and villages in eastern Ghouta and was pressing its military operations in the last rebel bastion of Douma.

In a televised statement, the Syrian army front man said the weeks-long military campaign had now brought security to the Syrian capital Damascus and also secured its main links to other parts of the country, stretching north and all the way to the Iraqi border to the east.

The army command said military operations were continuing in the outskirts of the city of Douma, controlled by the Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
rebel group, the last patch of eastern Ghouta still held by holy warriors.

Douma’s fall would seal the rebels’ worst defeat since 2016, driving them from their last big stronghold near the capital, and would also carry potent symbolism. The town was the main center of street protests in the Damascus suburbs against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
’s rule that ignited the conflict seven years ago.

The army said hundreds of rebels had been killed in the ferocious offensive. The opposition says a relentless air campaign was waged in which where the army used napalm, chlorine and incendiary bombs to demoralize rebels by targeting civilian areas.

The rebels say the indiscriminate bombing forced them to capitulate and agree to surrender deals that force them either to make peace or leave to rebel held areas after weeks of bombing and sieges that prevented food from reaching the enclaves.

The Syrian army has repeatedly said regaining control over rebel-held suburbs would stop rocket attacks on the capital.

They deny that many non-combatants were killed in bombardments that rescuers and residents say reduced whole neighborhoods to rubble in densely populated areas where at least 350,000 people lived.

Defence analysts say a major goal of the campaign was to complete a security belt around the capital.

President Assad said recently securing eastern Ghouta had foiled plots by his foreign enemies to topple him.

"The gains have been achieved after units of the army eliminated hundreds of terrorists, their headquarter and their fortifications," the army statement said.

Douma is surrounded by government forces. Tens of thousands of civilians remain in the town. The rebels there deny they are negotiating an evacuation deal and say talks with the Russian military aim to find a solution that would allow them to stay in the city under Moscow’s protection.

"Army units are continuing their combat operations to rid Douma of terrorists," the army statement said.

The Russian-backed offensive in eastern Ghouta has killed more than 1,600 civilians and thousands of maimed, rescuers said. The authorities say about 150,000 people have now been displaced from eastern Ghouta.

Thousands of people ‐ fighters, their families and other civilians ‐ have been leaving for northwestern Syria from other parts of eastern Ghouta in convoys of buses that have been given safe passage to Idlib province.

Syrian Army announces official control over East Ghouta towns

[ALMASDARNEWS] Chief of the General Staff of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) Ali Mayhoub announced that his troops established full control over “all Eastern Ghouta cities and villages in Damascus country,” during a televised address on Saturday.

“It obliterated hundreds of terrorists and destroyed their headquarters, gatherings, fortifications, weapons and machines, including factories of cannons, missiles, and different projectiles, while other units are carrying on their combating mission around Douma to save it from terrorism,” he added.

Philippine banks on alert after cyber attack at Malaysia central bank
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Philippine central bank has sounded an alert to local financial institutions following a cyber attack at the Malaysian central bank, in which hackers sought to steal money using fraudulent wire transfers, its governor said on Saturday.

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has said no funds were lost in the incident, which it identified on Tuesday, and involved falsified wire-transfer requests over the SWIFT bank messaging network, the latest in a series of electronic heists at financial institutions around the world.

"We issued a general alert reminder as soon as we got BNM advisory to be extra careful over the long holiday. Although banks already do that as SOP (standard operating procedure)," Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Nestor Espenilla said in a phone message.

"Information sharing is part of enhanced defensive protocols against cyber-crime," Espenilla said.

The alert was issued on Wednesday, and there had been no specific threat, officials said.

Bank Negara did not say who was behind the hack or how they accessed its SWIFT servers. The central bank, which supervises 45 commercial banks in Malaysia, said on Thursday there was no disruption to other payment and settlement systems the central bank operates because of the cyber attack.

In February 2016, the Philippine financial system was thrown into the global spotlight after $81 million that was stolen from Bangladesh central bank was channeled into several accounts at Manila-based Rizal Commercial Banking Corp (RCBC), before disappearing into the local casino industry.

The Bangladesh heist led financial institutions around the globe to bolster security. There is no word on who was responsible and Dhaka has been able to retrieve only about $15 million.

The Philippine central bank fined RCBC a record one billion pesos ($20 million) in 2016 for its failure to prevent the movement of the stolen money through it. RCBC has blamed rogue employees for the incident.

"The area is broad and ISIS has regrouped. They should be destroyed so that they can’t destabilize the area," he said.

Amirli is 170 kilometers southeast of Erbil and just south of Tuz Khurmatu and near Suleyman Beg.

"Hashd al-Shaabi brigades on Saturday morning started a search for ISIS remnants south of Khurmatu, 80 km south of Kirkuk,

Israel hit Hamas sites Friday night with tanks, jets after Gazans fired on troops
[IsraelTimes] No soldiers injured in most serious exchange capping violent day along border; IDF says shooting from inside Strip proves murderous Moslems using protests as cover to carry out attacks

Israeli tanks and planes bombed Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, sites in the Gazoo Strip Friday evening after troops came under fire amid intense day-long festivities on the border.

The Israel Defense Forces said it targeted three sites belonging to Hamas with tanks and from the air. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the attack, which came as the corpse count in festivities along the border rose to 16, according to the Hamas-run Gazoo health ministry.

The reprisal attack came after troops were shot at by two Gazooks approaching the security fence. No Israeli troops were hurt in the exchange, the IDF said.

"In response, IDF troops immediately fired according to the rules of engagement, targeting the terrorists," the IDF said in a statement. The army would not say if the two Gazook button men were hit.

The IDF said troops also fired at suspects who had infiltrated into Israeli territory from the Gazoo Strip via the security fence. The statement did not say if the suspects were still in Israeli territory.

The army earlier said troops were firing on suspects who approached the border fence and who it said it feared were using the chaos of Friday’s large demonstrations as cover to plant bombs or infiltrate into Israel.

A spokesperson said the shooting attack was "further proof that the terrorist organizations in the Gazoo Strip use these violent riots in order to camouflage terror."

The shooting attack, which came as the darkness fell Friday, came shortly after an army official said troops would remain deployed along the border amid fears of persistent attacks.

Benazir Bhutto Malala Yousafzai returns to Pakistan
[Rooters] Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai visited her birthplace in Pakistan’s Swat Valley on Saturday, bursting into tears as she entered her childhood home for the first time since a Taliban gunman shot her in 2012.

The 20-year-old told a family friend she planned to return home after completing her education at Oxford, where she is reading for a degree in politics, philosophy and economics.

Roads were blocked off in the town of Mingora as Yousafzai, known universally by her first name, flew in by military helicopter with her parents and brother.

Security was tight around her former home, now rented by a family friend, Farid-ul-Haq Haqqani, who has kept the young woman’s room intact with her books, school trophies and luggage.

“I asked her when are you permanently coming back and she said ‘God willing, when my education is completed, I will God willing come back to Pakistan.’”

He added that Malala chatted in her room with four friends from her school days in Swat, while her parents greeted neighbors who dropped by - since the security detail would not allow her to go to other houses or even up on the roof of her home.

Malala has been visiting Pakistan since Thursday, her first trip home since she was shot and airlifted abroad for treatment. The government and military have been providing security.

This month, a new girls’ school built with her Nobel prize money opened in the village of Shangla in Swat Valley.

Japan Should Not Run Amuck
[KCNAWATCH.CO] Rodong Sinmun - An ultramodern submarine has recently been commissioned into the Maritime "Self-Defense Force" of Japan.

It is reported that the sub is able to submerge 500 meters deep and its military hardware ensures a powerful precision and long-distance strike at a target.

Japan plans to introduce the latest submarines into MSDF.

Of late the Japan "Self-Defense Forces", together with the U.S. forces, staged joint military exercises aimed to track and destroy submarines in the Pacific Ocean.

Japan increases the capability for preemptive attack and surprise strike by use of submarines. This is part of its sustained efforts to turn itself into a military giant with an aim of realizing its ambition for overseas expansion with the backing of the U.S.

Japan is clinging to the U.S. like a leech, thinking that it can realize without difficulties the ambition for overseas expansion with the backing of a big country.

It frequently stages joint military exercises with the U.S., accelerating the modernization of military hardware of the SDF under the patronage of its master to accumulate war experience for invading other countries.

The danger of war is increasingly becoming a reality in Asia due to the Japanese militarist forces.

Peace and security in the region are endangered owing to the Samurai descendents who are making desperate efforts to make up for defeat.

The Japanese reactionaries should discern the trend of the times. They may get into trouble if they view Asia today as what it used to be in the past.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Over 60 Palestinians injured Friday in scattered protests across West Bank
[IsraelTimes] Roughly 900 West Bank Paleostinians demonstrate on Land Day and in solidarity with mass 'March of Return' at Gazoo border; non-violent marches held in northern Israel

Over 60 Paleostinians were maimed in festivities with IDF troops that took place across the West Bank Friday, as Paleostinians commemorated deadly fighting over 40 years ago and gathered in solidarity with the "March of Return" demonstrations being held en masse along the Gazoo border.

The Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy reported that at least 27 Paleostinians were maimed in Land Day demonstrations held in the northern West Bank city of Nablus, and that 63 were maimed in total.

An IDF front man referred to the scattered West Bank protests, which attracted some 900 demonstrators, as small scale.

Paleostinian media reported Israeli troops firing tear gas and rubber bullets at demonstrators near Nablus and Ramallah.

According to the B’Tselem rights group,
...formed during the first intifada in 1989, this far left group of academics and political operatives is funded by George Soros, UNICEF, the EU, and a variety of other leftwing, Israel-hating charitable organizations. They are allied with various Palestinian groups to project Palestinian claims of Israeli malevolence to the world, and have gotten so bad that Prime Minister Netanyahu has informed foreign dignitaries that he will not meet with them if they also meet with B’Tselem....
an Israeli settler ran over a Paleostinian in his 20s with an all-terrain vehicle outside the village of Sarura in the South Hebron Hills.

The Paleostinian was evacuated to a nearby hospital with what appeared to be a broken leg, B’Tselem said. It was not clear if it was a deliberate attack. A front man for the IDF said the army was looking into the incident.

Dozens of Paleostinian burned tired and hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at troops near the entrance of Ramallah, according to Hebrew media reports. Protests were also reported around Hebron, Qusra and other areas of the West Bank.

The protests were a small fraction of much larger demonstrations on the Gazoo border.

Peaceful marches to commemorate Land Day were held in several Arab Galilee towns, including a mass march led by Joint (Arab) List politicians in the town of Sakhnin.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Ahwaz protesters rally across new areas overnight
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Demonstrations in Ahwaz province in southwest Iran continued after midnight Friday following a segment aired by the Iranian state TV that ignored the Arab origins of the city, which is mostly Arab-populated.

Protesters considered the segment an insult from the Iranian regime and part of its continued political discrimination towards them.

The protests expanded to the city of Chiban, Abadan and Machour.

Social media activists circulated videos showing demonstrators in Chiban city chanting slogans in support of the Ahwaz province.

Demonstrators in Abadan, south of the province, erupted into the streets protesting against immigrant minorities who they say are controlling resources of their province and depriving the Ahwaz Arabs of their rights.

They believe these minorities are being supported by the central government in Tehran.

An Ahwaz human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
organization denounced the arrest of 12 protesters among them three women, condemning the stifling of peaceful demonstrations and the firing of tear gas on demonstrators in the Kout Abdulla neighborhood, south of Ahwaz.

The organization also criticized the harsh measures taken by the Iranian authorities against the Arab protesters, calling for the immediate release of all detainees and to allow protesters to demonstrate their rights in peaceful gatherings.

Paradigm Shift in Syria After Afrin
by Michael Goodyear

[SmallWarsJournal] On March 18, after two months of the Turkish military repeatedly shelling the Kurdish-held city of Afrin, Turkish-backed Syrian rebels occupied the city. Turkey’s campaign into Syria began a year and a half ago, initially focusing on uprooting the Islamic State. But with the sharp decline in power of the Islamic State following the fall of its de facto capital, Raqqa, Turkey has redirected its focus onto Kurdish forces in Syria. The capture of Afrin creates another power shift in Syria in favor of both Turkey and the Assad government, as well as possibly the Islamic State, at the expense of the Kurds but also the rebels.

The Syrian civil war has been anything but one-sided from the very start. The Assad regime (government forces), the loosely connected Syrian rebels (anti-government forces), the Kurds and assorted allies (Syrian Democratic Forces), and the Islamic State are the four major military factions in Syria. Their fortunes have been greatly aided and hindered by the support and opposition of foreign powers, including the United States, Russia, and Turkey.

#1  Afrin is still very hot for Turkey and their FSA mercenaries. Almost 50 FSA and Turk troops were killed in Afrin yesterday alone as well as a Turk tank was taken out.

IED's explosions are a daily event against the Turk/FSA forces in Afrin. One Brit fighting for the YPG was killed in the fighting 2 days ago.

Top Chinese militant leader among 7 killed in Afghan forces operations
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A top leader of a holy warrior group hailing from China was killed during the operations of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in Northeastern Badakhshan province.

The 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan Military in the North said at least seven bully boyz including two Chinese nationals were killed during the operations.

The officials further added that one of the Chinese nationals killed during the operations has been identified as Mustafa who was the deputy leader of a Chinese holy warrior group.

Southeast Asia
Laos on a fast track to a China debt trap
[ATimes] Laos is one of eight global countries considered of “particular concern” for a future debt crisis, according to a recent report by the Center for Global Development (CGD), a Washington-based economic think tank.

The main cause of concern is the small poor country’s big rich plans for a US$6.7 billion high-speed railway that China is promoting as part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The project’s cost represents a quarter of Laos’ current gross domestic product (GDP).

One-third of that sum will be covered by a China-Lao joint venture company, of which the Lao government will contribute roughly 30%, or around US$700 million. Around US$480 of that amount will come from an Export-Import Bank of China loan. The remaining US$220 million will be drawn from the state budget.

But, as the CGD report notes, “the financial terms for many elements of the project remain a secret.” The opaque terms on the remaining US$6 billion is raising concerns about the concessions China may be able to wrest in the case of default. The project is scheduled for completion in 2021.

Beijing has already notched various long-term land concessions for plantation agricultural and other commercial ventures that have facilitated fast migration of Chinese workers and entrepreneurs. The train, designed to connect China to Laos and then through Thailand to mainland Southeast Asia, will pave the way for even faster Chinese migration southward.

IDF: At least 10 of the 16 killed at Gaza border were members of terror groups
[IsraelTimes] Army publishes list of names, positions of men rubbed out during violence at the security fence; Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, acknowledges that five of them were button men from its military wing.

The Israeli military on Saturday night identified 10 of the 16 people reported killed during violent protests along the Gazoo security fence as members of Paleostinian terrorist groups, and published a list of their names and positions in the organizations.

On Friday, some 30,000 Paleostinians took part in demonstrations along the Gazoo border, during which rioters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence, burned tires and scrap wood, sought to breach and damage the security fence, and in one case shot up Israeli soldiers.

Arabia
The fatwa is not new, but the climate is
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] These days one often hears the argument: Where were these tolerant religious views and flexible doctrinal interpretations hidden earlier? Why have they come out in the open all at once? The implicit and at times explicit inference in these remarks is that moderate religious views that are becoming popular these days are part of a major conspiracy against Islam!

For example, there is controversy and debate over details regarding women, the arts and entertainment and the relationship of Moslems with those belonging to a different religion, sect or doctrinal denomination. Those who are raising fingers of accusation against moderate religious teachings have not immersed themselves in the study of orthodox ’fiqh’ (Islamic jurisprudence), which is replete with ’fatwas’ and opinions which the ignorant deem as heresy today.

In his interviews to the press, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
as of 2016....

said that Islam is being hijacked by a faction that wants to attain power, the faction of Islamists like the Moslem Brüderbund, the Khomeini regime (the Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist) or the Sururist Movement, a wretched branch of the Moslem Brüderbund; but Islam is not the private property of these elements. Marking a departure from the culture of these groups regarding women, he has stated that the general Moslem conscience supports the ideals of decency and good manners without discrimination of color and strictures of the Abaya or the dress worn by Moslem women.

This is absolutely true. Clothing is the manifestation of local cultural norms and setting. Take a look at the clothes of women of Mauritania or Sudan and compare them with the clothes of women from Chechnya, or Iranian women or Kurdish women. All of them have distinctive features that reflect their respective indigenous culture. The underlying idea behind all of them is the emphasis on decency.

Thus, I would like to emphasize that there is nothing new about the moderate religious discourse and it is not the reflection of a modern trend. The fact is that closed mindset has been opened and a gush of fresh air has started flowing.

US blocks UN resolution condemning Israel for deaths in Gaza clashes
[IsraelTimes] Scrapped Security Council draft urges investigation into IDF response, reaffirms 'right to peaceful protest'

The United States on Saturday blocked a draft UN Security Council statement urging restraint and calling for an investigation of festivities on the Gazoo-Israel border, diplomats said.

Kuwait, which represents Arab countries on the council, presented the proposed statement, which called for an "independent and transparent investigation" of the violence.

The draft council statement also expressed "grave concern at the situation at the border." And it reaffirmed "the right to peaceful protest" and expressed the council’s "sorrow at the loss of innocent Paleostinian lives."

The Israeli military on Saturday night identified 10 of the 16 people reported killed during violent protests along the Gazoo security fence as members of Paleostinian terrorist groups, and published a list of their names and positions in the organizations.

The draft statement was circulated to the council on Friday, but on Saturday the United States raised objections and said it did not support its adoption, a Security Council diplomat told AFP.

The US mission to the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
did not immediately respond to a request from AFP for comment.

The proposed statement also called "for respect for international human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
law and international humanitarian law, including protection of civilians," according to the draft seen by AFP.

Council members "called upon all sides to exercise restraint and prevent a further escalation," the draft said. The proposed statement stressed the need to promote peace between Israel and the Paleostinians based on a two-state solution.

The Paleostinian Authority on Saturday blamed the US and Britannia for obstructing the Paleostinian and Arab effort to persuade the Security Council to issue a resolution blasting Israel for the 16 Paleostinian fatalities.

Yusef al Mahmoud, spokesperson for the PA government in Ramallah, said that Washington’s and London’s opposition to a resolution condemning Israel "turns them into accomplices in the horrific massacre committed by the Israeli occupation army against our defenseless people."

Mahmoud accused the US and Britannia of displaying "bias in favor of oppression and suppression." He claimed that the Friday protests were "peaceful marches and demonstrations" to mark the 42nd anniversary of Land day.

The Israeli government alone, he charged, was "directly responsible for this dreadful massacre, which resulted in 16 deaders and hundreds of maimed."

The Security Council held a closed meeting on Friday night to discuss the festivities along the Gazoo-Israel border, despite a request from the US and Israel to postpone deliberations for Saturday due to Passover holiday eve.

PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
announced on Friday that he had instructed his envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, to ask the Security Council to provide "international protection" for the Paleostinians.

On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for "those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties." He also called for an independent and transparent investigation into the deaths and injuries during Friday’s festivities.

The Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terror group, for its part, expressed "regret" over the Security Council’s failure to issue a resolution condemning Israel.

The group condemned the US for thwarting the move at the Security Council and accused Washington of being "fully biased" in favor of Israel and "encouraging Israel to commit more violence and terrorism against Paleostinian civilians."

wants the US military to maintain a presence in Syria, he told TIME on Thursday during his multi-city tour of the United States.

"We believe American troops should stay for at least the mid-term, if not the long-term," he said.

Prince Mohammed said the US military presence is the last effort stopping Iran from continuing to expand influence with regional allies.

The presence of the troops, which have a remote base at Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria, will also allow Washington to have a say in Syria’s future, the crown prince said.

"If you take those troops out from east Syria, you will lose that checkpoint," Prince Mohammed said. "And this corridor could create a lot of things in the region."

There are currently about 2,000 US troops working with Syrian Democratic Forces to re-capture territory from ISIS.

The crown prince’s remarks came just hours after Trump told a cheering crowd in Ohio that US troops will soon be pulled out.

"By the way, we’re knocking the hell out of ISIS," Trump said. "We’re coming out of Syria very soon. Let the other people take care of it now, very soon. Very soon, we’re coming out."

During the interview, the crown prince also said he believes that Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

is not likely to be ousted from power.

He said he hopes that Assad will not become a "puppet" for Tehran.

"Bashar is staying ... But I believe that Bashar’s interests is not to let the Iranians do whatever they want they want to do."

Tibetan leader urges efforts to enable Dalai Lama’s return
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The prime minister of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile urged his compatriots on Saturday to strengthen efforts to make the return of the Dalai Lama to his native land a reality.

Lobsang Sangay also said Tibet has seen 60 years of destruction of its civilization, culture and identity by the Chinese since the Dalai Lama, the Tibetans’ spiritual leader, fled to India in 1959.

The Dalai Lama and Sangay spoke at a public event in the northern Indian town of Dharmsala marking the beginning of the 60th year of the spiritual leader’s exile in India.

Sangay said the Dalai Lama "dreamt of himself in a room in the Potala Palace filled with light where he will be reunited with Tibetans inside Tibet." The Potala Palace in Lhasa was the residence of the Dalai Lama until he fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising.

"We Tibetan people with the support of people of India and abroad should strengthen our efforts to make his return to his Potala Palace a reality," Sangay said. "Let us reunite the Dalai Lama with Tibetans inside Tibet who have spent the last 60 years with a hope, with a dream to get a glimpse of the Dalai Lama in their lifetime."

"Thousands and thousands of Tibetans have been killed and have died for the cause of Tibet. Many of them have burned themselves alive," he said in a hard-hitting speech.

Yoga instructor responds to Kuwait sermon that linked the sport to atheism
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Since the unified sermon for a Friday prayer in Kuwait last week stirred controversy for linking moral decay to granting women freedom and for slamming yoga and physical activity, deeming them reflective of atheism, one Yoga instructor stepped up.

Ruba Mohammed, a Yoga expert and instructor in Egypt, explained to Al Arabiya the nature of this sport, its benefits and how it’s linked to mediation.

“Yoga means union or communication between the self and the universe, and between the soul and the body,” said Mohammed.

“In order to achieve this union or communication, it must be done through a portal called meditation. This is achieved by yoga,” she added.

According to Mohammed, there are three types of meditation in Yoga.

Types of meditation
The first is moving meditation. Movement in this type of meditation can be slow, fast or moderate depending on its goal. Mainly, movement meditation focuses muscle contraction and relaxation, circulation and flexibility.

The second is vocal meditation. This type is split into two categories. The first is known as Prima, which is essentially concentrates on breathing. This type aims to train a person how to breathe in a deeper and better way.

The second category is known as Mantra, this focuses on sounds that signal vibrations to rid the body from negative energy.

The third type is mind meditation, which seeks to improve the individual’s thinking process.

The instructor continued to explain that meditation is the means by which the individual reaches a state of union with himself or the universe. Each meditation type has its own set of positions, she added.

Yoga benefits
Mohammed explained that one of the modes of meditation “affects the individual physically and psychologically. It reduces anxiety and tension, increases self-confidence, creativity and stimulates a more flexible body.”

Yoga also “prolongs muscle life, improves the digestive system and reduces back pain and neck problems,” she added.

Another meditation position seeks to “calm the mind and spread a sense of peace and serenity. It stimulates internal organ functions, treats headaches, blood pressure and osteoporosis. It also seeks to rid the person from depression,” said Mohammed.

The instructor said that “Yoga seeks to allow an individual to reflect on God’s creations, what does atheism have to do with this?”

“Yoga has spread in recent years because of people’s desire to feel safe, calm, serene and maintain clarity of mind from life’s pressures,” she added.

Afghanistan
Letter by Mullah Omar’s son: Myth or Depiction of deep rift among Taliban leaders
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Mullah Yaqoob, the son of Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group founder and ex-supreme leader, Mullah Mohammaer Omar, regarding the deadly attack January in Kabul city, reveals deep rift among the Taliban group leadership.

The authenticity of the letter cannot be independently verified but it carries an official tamp of the Taliban group with the official designation of Mullah Yaqoob as the deputy Taliban chief for the military affairs.

The letter states that the attack near Jamhoriat hospital with an ambulance has not only resulted in massive civilian casualties but resulted into depiction of a negative image of Taliban on domestic and international level besides resulting into reduced support to the movement.

Mullah Yaqoob states in his letter that the current Taliban supreme leader Sheikh Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada
...Former deputy to Taliban supremo Mullah Akhtar Mansour, now The Big Man Himself...
and the military commission did not consult with him prior to conducting the attack.

According to Mullah Yaqoob, the attack was carried out based on the instructions of Haqqani network leader, insisting that he has always rejected such attacks that results into growing hatred among the people regarding the Taliban group.

He suggested that the Taliban leader Mullah Akhundzada should refrain from such attacks in the future results more into the defamation of the Taliban as compared to the benefits the group gains from such attacks.

The Taliban group had claimed the responsibility for the attack which left more than 100 dead and hundreds more maimed.

The group called the attack a major breakthrough claiming that heavy casualties were incurred to the police forces after the jacket wallahs managed to infiltrated through several check posts in the city to conduct the attack.

This is not the first reports have emerged regarding internal rift among the Taliban leadership after the confirmation of the death of the group’s supreme leader Mullh Omar.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
a front man for the Taliban group Qari Yousuf Ahmadi blames the intelligence circles for the circulation of the letter although the Afghan officials have not commented in this regard so far.

Africa North
Mauritania: Court Jails Slave Owners for Up to 20 Years
[All Africa] A court in Mauritania has sentenced two slave owners to between 10 and 20 years in jail. Human rights activists have celebrated the ruling, which they say is the harshest anti-slavery decision in the country's history.

The two cases were brought by former slaves in the northwestern town of Nouadhibou, activists said Friday.

A special court delivered its verdict on Wednesday, jailing a man for 20 years and a woman for 10 years, a judicial source said.

The man was found guilty of enslaving a family, including two children, while the woman was accused of holding three sisters as slaves.

"This is a big victory," Jakub Sobik of Anti-Slavery International told news agency Rooters. "The sentences are quite high and in line with the law, which is by no means a given."

Slavery still common
Mauritania has one of the highest rates of slavery in the world, even though the practice was officially abolished there in 1981. According to the 2016 Global Slavery Index, 1 in 100 people still live as slaves in the conservative West African country.

Despite the law, descendants of certain ethnic groups are often born into slavery, working without pay as cattle herders and domestic servants.

In 2015, Mauritania adopted a new law declaring slavery a "crime against humanity" punishable by up to 20 years in jail. It also set up specialized anti-slavery tribunals in Nouadhibou, the capital Noukachott and in Nema in the southeast.

Few slave owners have been prosecuted, however, and activists complain the laws are rarely enforced. In 2016, the court in Nema jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
two men for five years over slavery charges.

The head of anti-slavery association SOS Esclavage, Boubacar Ould Messaoud, praised the latest rulings, but noted that there were a number of similar cases "pending for several years" at the three courts.

At the same time, rights groups say they face growing repression and harassment, with more anti-slavery activists than slave-owners facing prosecution.

Bangladesh
Jamaat: Release Khaleda Zia for medical treatment
[Dhaka Tribune] Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
has called on the government to release BNP Chief the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
so that she can receive medical treatment wherever she wants.

The party, an ally of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, made the demand in a statement on Saturday.

"We are concerned over the news that Khaleda Zia has fallen ill in jail," the party’s acting chief Maulana ANM Shamsul Islam said in the statement.

"Ministers are creating confusion by making numerous statements on Khaleda Zia’s illness. This is unfair and unexpected. She returned home a few months ago after receiving treatment abroad," he said.

The Jamaat leader alleged the government was trying to create mental pressure on the 73-year old BNP leader. "That is why she has fallen sick again."

He said the government has violated human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
by not allowing better treatment for Khaleda Zia.

"Since she is a former prime minister, she has constitutional right to get better treatment abroad. The government is violating the constitution by not releasing her," said the Jamaat leader.

On February 8, a special court sentenced the BNP chairperson to five years in jail in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Since then she has been at a special cell at the Old Central Jail.

China-Japan-Koreas
China accuses Canada of being ‘US colony’ as trade sparks fly
[Atimes] NAFTA partner’s planned crackdown on the dumping of cheap steel angers the world’s second-largest economy.

When it comes to swapping insults, China’s state-owned media is in a league of its own. With a heavy helping of bile, the world’s second-largest economy ratcheted up the rhetoric with the United States in a looming trade war by branding neighbor Canada a “US colony.”

In a 477-word media tirade, China picked apart remarks made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday when he announced plans to bring in new regulations to crack down on countries dumping cheap steel and aluminum in foreign markets.

“Canada is a trading nation, and we will not allow North American industries to be hurt or threatened by unfair trade practices, like the diversion of steel and aluminum,” Trudeau said in a statement, without directly naming China.

“Our businesses and workers rely on our integrated industries, and we will take strong action to defend and protect our most important trade relationships. Canada will not be used as a backdoor into other North American markets. Our people have worked hard to be competitive in this global economy, and they deserve a level playing field,” he added.

But Trudeau’s comments sparked outrage in the Global Times, which is run by People’s Daily, the mouthpiece of Beijing.

‘Freaked out’
“[US President Donald] Trump’s announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports earlier this month seems to have freaked out Canada [and it] may be trying to cement the exemption by accusing China of dumping,” the state-owned newspaper said in an editorial on Friday.

“In fact, Canada is more like a US colony economically, and half of its trade is with the US … But by following the US suit, Canada is acting like a crafty merchant,” it went on to say.

“We despise the way Canada vacillates between China and the US, and won’t readily let this go. Beijing should take punitive measures against Ottawa’s actions that undermine the interests of Chinese business, sending a warning to others,” the editorial added.

Still, President Xi Jinping’s ‘cabinet’ appears to be spooked since the Trump administration rolled out tough measures last month to curb steel and aluminum imports from China.

On Monday, Washington demanded that Beijing should cut tariffs on imported cars and allow access for foreign firms to own majority stakes in domestic financial services companies.
The White House also told China to buy more US-made semiconductors and clamp down on infringements on intellectual property rights. Failure to agree would trigger a new round of punitive tariffs on an array of Chinese goods, escalating trade tensions.

“We’re hopeful that China will work with us to basically address some of these practices,” Peter Navarro, the new US trade adviser, told CNBC earlier this week in a rare note of optimism after Trump slapped up to US$60 billion in tariffs on certain Chinese imports.

In response, Beijing has swung from confrontation to reconciliation. On Thursday, they told the US not to open “Pandora’s Box” and threatened to roll out $3 billion in tariffs on imports ranging from aircraft and related equipment to soybeans and cars.

“The malicious practices of the United States are like opening Pandora’s Box, and there is a danger of triggering a chain reaction that will spread the virus of trade protectionism across the globe,” a Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman told the media.

#2  China has nothing. We've got them by the balls. A trade war will devastate them, while we will be largely unaffected.

We could have done this ages ago, and saved our people. But the State Department didn't want to do it. Why would they benefit our own people at the expense of hostile foreigners?

Major fire at Yemen’s Hodeidah port destroys aid supplies
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A fire broke out at the Houthi-controlled Yemeni port of Hodeidah early on Saturday, destroying warehouses filled with cooking fuel and foodstuffs, port workers said.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire engulfed five warehouses belonging to the World Food Program, in the area of Kilo 7 in the Houthi-controlled city of Hodeidah, stressing that the stores contained various aid and food items, including cooking oils and other materials.

There has been no explanation from the WFP yet on the causes of the fire at the time of publication, while Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...

Syrian Army to officially launch southern Syria offensive
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) will be officially launching their southern Syria offensive in the coming weeks, a military source told al-Masdar News this evening.

According to the military source, most of the Syrian Army units that participated in the East Ghouta offensive will now partake in the operations in southern Syria.

The source added that the primary objectives will be to secure the main highway from Dara’a to Damascus and retake the al-Quneitra Governorate from the jihadist rebels.

The Syrian Army has offered to reconcile with the rebel forces in Dara’a; however, the latter has rejected all of the government’s offers.
