[JPost] - Saudi Arabia has restricted the annual Hajj pilgrimage to its own citizens and residents for the second year running in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the state Saudi Press Agency (SPA)reported on Saturday.
Only people aged between 18 and 65 who have been vaccinated or immunized against the virus, and are free of chronic diseases, will be able to take part, the ministry that manages the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca said in a statement carried by SPA.
It also set a maximum of 60,000 participants.
"The decision (was made) to guarantee the safety of haj amid uncertainty over the coronavirus," the kingdom's health minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah said in a televised press conference carried by SPA.
"Despite the availability of vaccine, there is uncertainty over the virus and some countries still record high numbers of COVID cases, the other challenge is the different variants of the virus, hence came the decision to restrict hajj," al-Rabiah said.
The minister said only approved COVID vaccines from Pfizer, Astrazeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson will be valid for the hajj. No Sinovac or Sinopharm vaccinated need apply

Just did a year with Khan and math, pre-Algebra.
Solid, especially if your math and/or teaching skills need a bit more refinement. My disagreements were philosophical in nature, such as order of teaching, but it is far superior to Common Corp.
And that disagreement is as old as time, how to show the importance, relevancy, and usefulness in math to a student who was brought up to believe in its uselessness, "I'll never use Algebra/Trig/Geometry/etc! so what's the point?"
One was a play on what an olde math teacher called "Pick up Triangles" where a series of connected triangles was shown, and side and/or angle or 2 would be presented, and you had to find all other sides and angles. 3 rectangles were positioned to form a right triangle, one rectangle side was given, solve. So I go about doing my thing, but the lesson was to pick one of the 4 answers which made most sense and confirm.
I was like, "Hold up, that isn't solving, that's picking an answer, and that isn't how real life works. "You are building an overpass in Florida, should the supporting beams be A, B, D, or D?" " Explaining this to Daughter, this she agreed it was a bit flash for the chapter "My first Triangles" she hadn't been given the proper tools, the formulas and theorems, necessary to solve it, which she found frustrating rather than inspirational, so if you know your stuff, you will still want to stay on top of the daily lessons.

[Epoch Times] Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) told Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on June 10 that "hundreds" of military whistleblowers have reported being forced to receive "anti-American indoctrination" training, including critical race theory (CRT).
In a Senate hearing with Austin, Cotton claimed that within the military, there’s "plummeting morale, growing mistrust between races and sexes where none existed just six months ago and unexpected retirements and separations based on these trainings alone." Just purging the Trumpers.
In the hearing, Austin told Cotton that some training is designed to make sure that the armed forces are "welcoming to everyone who can qualify and who is fit to serve."
"We ought to look like the America we support and defend, and senior leadership should look like what's in the ranks," Austin said.
But Cotton suggested that claims the military is attempting to foster diversity with such training are incorrect.
"[It's] about a very specific kind of anti-American indoctrination that is seeping into some parts of our military, based on the whistleblower complaints we have received," he said.
One whistleblower, Cotton alleged, said that military history training was replaced with training about police brutality, "systemic racism," and "white privilege." Another said that his unit had to read "White Fragility" by feminist author and critical theory proponent Robin DiAngelo, according to the senator.

[Rudaw] Washington on Thursday lifted sanctions on five Iranian officials and companies who it said were involved in the oil trade. Officials said the move was unrelated to the nuclear talks in Vienna, but was because of a "change in status or behavior."
The US lifted sanctions on three former officials with the Iranian government and two companies "previously involved in the purchase, acquisition, sale, transport, or marketing of Iranian petrochemical products," the state department announced.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the decision to lift sanctions was a result of "a verified change in status or behavior on the part of the sanctioned parties."
US state department spokesperson Ned Price said during a press briefing on Thursday that there was no connection between the delisting and ongoing talks in Vienna to revive the Iranian nuclear accord, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
"What is absolutely true is that there is absolutely no connection between the JCPOA and ongoing negotiations in Vienna. This is a routine technical practice consistent with sanctions hygiene," he said, adding "delisting is a normal practice."
The JCPOA, signed in 2015, put limits on Iran’s nuclear activities and allowed inspections into its facilities. Former US President Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! The message from Erdogan was that, if a truce is declared in Turkey, then "whatever you do in other parts of Kurdistan, will not be [Ankara’s] business," Karayilan said.
The PKK leader said this was an attempt by Turkey to encourage a war between the PKK and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), which is the main ruling party in the Kurdistan Region and enjoys strong ties with Ankara. "This is the enemy’s game. We need to be aware," said Karayilan.
The offer from Turkey was made in secret and Karayilan wanted to raise it in a meeting with KDP leader Masoud Barzani or other officials, but decided to "reveal it to the Kurdish public now."
Historic tensions between the PKK and KDP are once again elevated as the PKK is under intense pressure from Turkey’s armed forces and drone power, and the guerrillas are blamed for two separate attacks on Peshmerga forces that resulted in the death of six. The PKK has denied involvement in the deaths.

[DW] A Nigerian regional governor called on the residents to "defend themselves" against bandidos following the latest brutal attack.
At least 90 people were killed by gunnies in northwestern Nigeria, local media reported on Friday citing the region's police.
"An attack took place at Kadawa village of Zurmi local government where bandidos took advantage of the night to strike on unsuspecting people and killed them in cold blood," a police spokesperson told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
"On getting the news of the attack, the Commissioner of Police ordered combined units of security personnel to mobilize to the area, restore peace and confidence in the communities and track the perpetrators so that they can be brought to book," he added.
The attack, which took place on Thursday in a village in Zamfara state, was the latest in a spate of deadly attacks and mass kidnappings the region has seen in recent months.
GOVERNOR: 'DEFEND YOURSELF'
Earlier on Friday, the governor of Zamfara told residents to take matters into their own hands and fight back against such attacks.
"I am calling on the people of the state to defend themselves if the bandidos attack them," Governor Bello Matawalle was quoted as saying by the Nigerian Tribune daily.
"My government has approved that whenever the bandidos attack you, do not wait for the security personnel to come to your rescue. You should rise and protect yourselves," he said.

On June 2, Erdogan told the same outlet that Makhmour was the next target after the Qandil Mountains — where the PKK is headquarted.

The ministry identified the slain youth as Mohammad Hamayel, 15, adding that six protesters were maimed just outside the village of Beita, near the Evyatar outpost.
The official Paleostinian news agency Wafa reported that Israeli troops fired live rounds, tear gas and rubber-coated steel pellets at the demonstrators.
The IDF said its forces had responded to violent mostly peaceful riots which hundreds of Paleostinians took part in, hurling stones, burning tires and shooting off fireworks.
The army added that it used riot-dispersal measures, including the shooting of low-caliber Ruger rounds, which are meant to be less lethal than other forms of ammunition.

The land on which Evyatar was reestablished in April historically belonged to the adjacent Paleostinian villages of Beita, Kablan and Yitma, though residents have been barred access to it for decades for what the IDF has said were security reasons.

"The (Qala-e-Naw) city is under the threat by Taliban. In Sozma Qala district, only district building and two check posts have remained, but according to our information, the center of the district has fallen (to Death Eaters)," said Sayed Hayatullah Alimi, MP from Sar-e-Pul.
A politician from Badghis province in southwest Afghanistan said fighting between government forces and the Taliban has inched closer to the outskirts of Qala-e-Naw, the province's center. Badghis MPs also asked for additional troops deployed to the province to repel the threats.
Taliban also launched attacks on several fronts in Nimroz and Badakhshan provinces.
"We have lost several parts of Arghanjkhwah district in Badakhshan. The problem will get worse if the government does not take action regarding the issue," said Hujjatullah Farahmand, MP from Badakhshan.
"The enemy launched a major offensive on Khashrod district in Nimroz to capture the district," said Gul Ahmad Noorzad, an MP from Nimroz.
But the Afghan security authorities said the government forces have inflicted massive casualties to the Taliban in the past 24 hours.
"Heavy casualties were inflected (to Taliban) in Pashtun Kot and Qaisar districts in Faryab, Sozma Qala district in Sar-e-Pul as well as in Uruzgan and Baghlan provinces," the Defense Ministry front man Rohullah Ahmadzai said.
In a statement on Friday, the 209 Shaheen Army Corps assured the residents of Sar-e-Pul and Takhar that all districts in the two provinces will be protected against threats from Death Eaters.

The district governor said that the public uprising forces need further support in terms of equipment.
"Balkh district has 184 districts. Unfortunately, most of the villages are under the opposition’s influence, but fortunately, we have a good percentage under our control where the morale is very high... At least 35% of the villages are under the government’s control."
At least 20 members of public uprising forces are stationed at an outpost 4 kilometers far from Boka district, which is often contested between government forces and the Taliban. Security forces at the outpost said they are always ready to defend their areas against any threat from bully boys.
"Taliban attack whenever they find an opportunity, but we are fully ready to defend," said Agha Mohammad, a commander of public uprising forces.
Another member of the public uprising forces said that festivities have intensified over the last few days.
"This area is called Piaaz-Kar. It is the frontline. The enemy roams here every night, but they have failed in their evil goal. They attack, but they are suppressed, they are defeated and then they go back," said Hafizullah, a member of public uprising forces.
According to the local forces, the Taliban uses people’s homes for the war, a claim that was rejected by the group.
"These homes have been used in many attacks on us. They have shelled rockets on us from these homes, but they cannot succeed. We have given them a tit-for-tat response and we will do the same, going forward," said Gulab Khan, a public uprising forces member.
The continuation of festivities in the district has created concerns among the resident who says violence must stop.
"The foreigners are leaving our country, but still attacks are happening in our district in which only civilians are harmed," said Saifuddin, a Balkh resident.
"They destroyed houses, killed our people, and left them with a dark future, they planted mines. What is the sin of these Moslems? They are civilians," said Abdul Jabbar, a Balkh resident.

Unidentified men rubbed out the senior intelligence officer as he drove his car in al-Baladiyat area.
The Colonel, Nibras Farman al-Faili, was the Head of the Rusafa office in the Intelligence Service.

Austin said the US military is already conducting air combat patrols and support from ships in the Gulf and sending surveillance aircraft to Afghanistan from nations in the Gulf region.
As of now, he said, the US is still looking for options to station troops and aircraft in neighboring countries to make the flight to Afghanistan shorter.
"We have the capability now to do that," Austin said. "What we are looking for is the ability to shorten the legs going forward by stationing some capability in neighboring countries. That is still a work in progress."
In response to a question on whether US aircraft would strike in support of Afghan forces to protect cities after the withdrawal, Austin said he would not speculate on "any potential outcomes or any potential future actions."
"We continue to provide support to the Afghan cops as we retrograde," he said. "Once we have completed our retrograde, that will be very difficult to do because our capabilities will have diminished in country."

The shooter, identified as 55-year-old Timothy J. Wall, then killed himself, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
The motive in the shooting remains unknown. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has said there is no known relationship between the shooter and the victims, who will remain unidentified after their families invoked Marsy's Law.
Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw indicated in a news conference Friday that Wall had expressed on social media a desire to "kill people and children."
Sheriff Maj. Talal Masri said authorities received the first call about shots fired at 11:35 a.m. By the time they arrived at the Publix Supermarket in Royal Palm Beach, they found both victims and the shooter dead.
Based on a review of video from inside the store, Masri said Sherlocks determined the victims had arrived at 11:07 a.m.
Wall entered the store at 11:29 a.m., Masri said, carrying a golf putter like a walking stick. At 11:30 a.m., the grandmother and her grandson entered the produce section. Wall followed a minute later and was looking toward the victims, Masri said.

Pugliese commented on the statements made by Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in an interview with the Al Jazeera news channel, that "Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. "A few weeks later, there was a phone call between the Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio, and his Algerian counterpart, Sabri Boukadoum, who again spoke about Libya and the Middle East," he added.
Pugliese said that during Libyan Prime Minister, Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba’s visit to Algeria, the issue of trade and investments with Algiers was discussed. He added that they "also talked about renewable energy, hence the issues of technological innovation."
The Italian Ambassador added: "Libya and Algeria share various topics of common interest, such as the security of their long land border, and the fight against terrorism, but there are also economic files that Italia can enter as well."

[WASHINGTONTIMES] Sen. Tom Cotton revealed several whistleblower complaints from service members who objected to critical-race theory indoctrination in the military, including airmen being divide race into groups for "privilege walks."
The service members also spoke out against receiving reading lists of critical race theory books as part of the Pentagon’s new anti-extremism and diversity training within the ranks.
Mr. Cotton, Arkansas Republican, received the complaints after launching a whistleblower site in late May in partnership with Rep. Dan Crenshaw, Texas Republican.
Mr. Cotton, a former Army infantry officer, and Mr. Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL lieutenant commander, created the site to identify "woke" ideology within the military, they said.
"This is about a very specific kind of anti-American indoctrination that is seeping into some parts of our military," Mr. Cotton said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Thursday.
"One Marine told us a military history training session was replaced with mandatory training on police brutality, white privilege, and systemic racism. He reported that several officers are now leaving his unit citing that training," he said. "Another service member told us that their unit was required to read White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo which claims, ’white people raised in western society are conditioned in a white supremacist world view.’"
He said an airman complained that an exercise called a privilege walk, saying it was a "racist exercise."
"Members of the wing were ordered to separate themselves by race and gender in order to stratify people based on their perceived privilege," Mr. Cotton said in describing the airman’s complaint.
The senator detailed several specific complaints on Thursday when questioning Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III during a committee hearing.
"We’re hearing reports of plummeting morale, growing mistrust between the races and sexes where none existed just six months ago, and unexpected retirements and separations based on these trainings alone," he said.
Mr. Cotton asked Mr. Austin whether he believes the military is fundamentally racist and whether service members should be treated differently based on race or sex. Mr. Austin answered no to both questions, and he said he welcomed service members to make complaints through their chain of command or inspector general.

[REGNUM] The situation with irrigation water in Kyrgyzstan is critical, the most severe deficit is now in the Chui region. This was announced today, June 11, at a press conference by the director of the Association of Corn Growers Vitaly Kakshtyks.
According to him, if now farmers do not regularly water corn and beets, they will go bankrupt, and farmers will have nothing to feed their livestock with.

Historical background of the problem

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020 pushing 22 million people out of work, the government has responded even more forcefully with trillions of dollars in increased spending.
That support has included three rounds of direct payments to individuals, with the last payments authorized in the $1.9 trillion relief package that President Joe The Big Guy Biden ...46th president of the U.S. I'm not working for you. Other support programs provided billions of dollars in emergency unemployment benefits and forgivable loans.
The deficit for the budget year that ended Sept. 30 totaled a record $3.1 trillion. Biden, who released his first budget earlier this month, is projecting that this year's deficit will total $3.67 trillion and will remain above $1 trillion every year over the next decade, reflecting his ambitious plans to boost spending on infrastructure and American families.
The annual federal deficit first topped $1 trillion in 2009 and remained above that level for four years as a deep recession triggered by the 2008 financial crisis depressed tax revenues and led to increased government spending to fight the downturn.
The deficit in May totaled $132 billion, compared to a deficit in May 2020 of $398.8 billion that heavy spending on the initial pandemic relief programs and the delay of the tax deadline.

In which M. Murcek shares another happy discovery.
Some writers have only one good book in them. Some have several books but only one is good. A hard situation for the reader is when you finish a book that’s so good you want more, but you already know that’s not happening.
Steven Price’s By Gaslight: A Novel is that sort of book. A fictional account of detective agency scion William Pinkerton chasing a ghost that haunted his father across the Civil War to Victorian London, the book had me making a side trip to study the crime argot of the era. That was painful only because the book was hard to put down.
Books that force us to expand our knowledge of other times and places are always a good thing for the serious reader. Characterization, pacing, details that make the scenes very real are all in abundance. Sorting his father Allen’s papers after his death, William discovers the founder of modern detection’s bete noir, the shadowy criminal Edward Shade. Unsettled by the peculiar lengths his father employed trying to track down Shade, William travels to London following the few and meager clues he has. The story shifts back and forth from the Civil War to the Victorian era and it becomes clear that William’s past is enmeshed with Shade’s, though neither know it. Shade, like all members of "the flash," the criminal underworld of the Victorian era, only wants to survive.
William’s hunt unconsciously morphs from a search for Shade to a search for the parts of his father that he doesn’t understand. With a strained association to Scotland Yard, William becomes involved in London society high and low. The tension and camaraderie with his British counterparts is one of the best flavors of the story. As William notes inconsistencies in the clues he gathers, the story seems it will have no resolution. Then, like all the best crime novels, the case is solved like a thunderclap. Only the best writers finish out a story with a coda that isn’t necessarily part of the bigger story, but, like stretching and walking it off after a run, it leaves the reader winded but not in distress. Price does this as only the best can.
Steven Price is a Canadian poet. I’ve not gotten to his poetry, but I will. His other novel is Into That Darkness, a sci-fi story that’s extremely different from By Gaslight. It’s not available as an ebook so I haven’t read it but I’ll be looking for a used dead tree copy soon.
