ISTANBUL, June 27 (Reuters) - Turkish defence firm Baykar said on Monday it would donate three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Ukraine, after a crowdfunding campaign there raised enough funds to buy "several" of the Bayraktar TB2 model.
The TB2 has been hugely popular in Ukraine, where it helped destroy Russian artillery systems and armoured vehicles. It even became the subject of a patriotic expletive-strewn hit song in Ukraine that mocked Russian troops, with the chorus "Bayraktar, Bayraktar". read more
Baykar said the crowdfunding campaign in Ukraine had reached the milestone in a few days and that business leaders as well ordinary people contributed to the fund.
"Baykar will not accept payment for the TB2s, and will send three UAVs free of charge to the Ukrainian war front," the company said in a statement.
"We ask that raised funds be remitted instead to the struggling people of Ukraine," it said.
Russia has previously complained to Turkey over its sale of Bayraktar TB2 armed drones to Ukraine, a high level Turkish bureaucrat said, but added that the sales by Baykar, a private company, were not state-to-state deals. read more
Turkey has forged close ties with Russia in energy, defence and trade, and relies heavily on Russian tourists. Baykar had sold the drones to Kyiv despite Russian objections and signed a deal to co-produce more before the invasion, angering Moscow.
The TB2, which has also been used in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh, now spearheads Turkey's global defence export push.
Lithuania's defence ministry said earlier this month that Turkey's Defence Industry Agency would donate a TB2 to Lithuania for transfer to Ukraine after Lithuanians crowdfunded nearly 6 million euros to buy it.

[FOX] Dozens of cruise ship passengers were involved in an all-out brawl in a nightclub on a cruise ship as it sailed through international waters headed for New York City overnight into Tuesday, according to reports.
Security for the Carnival Magic tried to intervene when the physical fight escalated to as many as 60 people but eventually had to call in the Coast Guard to help escort the ship back, according to the New York Post.
The ship arrived Tuesday morning with New York police waiting as it docked.

[San Diego Union-Tribune] The San Dieguito Union High School Board voted quietly Sunday to fire Superintendent Cheryl James-Ward after two and a half months of controversy surrounding comments she made linking Asian student academic performance to an influx of wealthy Chinese immigrant families.
The four-member board voted unanimously in a meeting Sunday evening to terminate James-Ward’s contract without cause effective Aug. 15. Trustee Michael Allman announced the decision after the board met in closed session for two and a half hours. None of the board members commented further on their decision before adjourning the meeting.
"The vote was unanimous and I wish Ms. Ward well," Board President Maureen "Mo" Muir said in an email Monday. "It’s time for the district to move forward again."
Trustees Allman, Katrina Young and Julie Bronstein declined to comment Monday.
James-Ward’s contract was set to expire in June 2025. Because she is being terminated without cause, her contract allows her to be paid a year’s salary as a buyout. She was being paid a $288,000 annual salary.
"Thank you to every teacher, school leader, student, parent and community member that has supported me through this ordeal," James-Ward said in a statement Tuesday.

....I wonder how many of these brain-dead 'superintendents' we'd lose without the pay-or-play contracts that seem to be de rigeur. For instance, at one point back in the early 90s Cleveland was paying FOUR school superintendents - they'd get hired for a guaranteed four years no matter what, and then they'd get 86d after a year or so. And like this twinkie, they get to sit around on six figures of the public dime for a few years until the next set of suckers pops up.
You get paid for no more than two years at a time.

She's not wrong on the number of wealthy Chinese buying houses in north San Diego. Pardee built a series of subdivisions in Torrey Highlands with the homes starting around $1.6Mil+ . I talked to the Supt. and he said they were basically pre-selling them, sight-unseen (before building), for cash, to Chinese. That said, I think their cultural push for success is what matters, not the money.

A report filed by the government indicates that at least three people died when their vehicle was targeted by an Improvised Explosive Device [IED] within the vicinity of Qabno township in southern Matabaan, Hiraan region of the country.
Officials said among those who died were two soldiers who responded to the attack at the scene. Three people among them TV journalists attached to the HirShabelle regional TV were critically injured and are currently being treated in various facilities within the country.
The explosion occurred as Somali government forces clashed with al-Shabaab forces of Evil in the area. Government forces entered the area in an effort to clear the bad boys. Reports coming within the last few minutes say the forces of Evil launched a counterattack and there is an ongoing firefight.
SJS, a media lobby group within the country, has since condemned the attack, asking various groups to respect media freedoms for the sake of prosperity. The media has often borne the brunt of the group's cowardly attacks within the country.
"We are shocked to learn about the kaboom on the journalists’ vehicle in Qabno locality, central Somalia today. Journalists Abdikarin and Khalid who work for Hirshabelle State-owned TV were maimed. They're currently receiving medical attention," the group noted.
"Journalists are independent observers and all warring sides should know that, under international humanitarian law, it is unlawful to target journalists and media crew and therefore should ensure their safety and security. We pray for a speedy recovery of the two colleagues."

Bayraktar TB2, the battle-proven drone used in Syria, Libya, Karabakh, and Ukraine, is the most exported UCAV around the world and has been sold to over 21 countries, including Djibouti.
The TB2, which has a 12-meter (40-foot) wingspan and can soar to 25,000 feet before swooping in to destroy tanks and artillery with laser-guided armor-piercing bombs, helped undermine Russia's overwhelming military superiority, which gained it the worldwide fame.
The Bayraktar drone has also received attention from Russian President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. "Under international law, all detainees must be treated fairly and humanely until their crime is proven, free from any discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, language, or gender," said Javid Sangdel, a lawyer.
The Pentagon has identified Assadullah Haroon as the commander of Islamist militias and al-Qaeda couriers.
The Islamic Emirate said that Haroon was freed as a result of engagement between the US and Kabul, but they did not provide details.

The Sunday Times of London said the prince was given a total of 3 million euros by Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, the former prime minister of Qatar. It said the money was handed over to the British royal at private meetings between 2011 and 2015 — on one occasion in a suitcase, and on another in shopping bags from London’s Fortnum & Mason department store.
The report said that Charles’s aides were uncomfortable with the transfers but did little to intervene.
According to the newspaper, the money was deposited into the accounts of the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund. It did not allege that anything illegal was done.
Charles’ office, Clarence House, said in a statement that the donations "were passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate governance and have assured us that all the correct processes were followed."
The prince’s charitable fund told the newspaper it had verified "that the donor was a legitimate and verified counterparty ... and our auditors signed off on the donation after a specific enquiry during the audit. There was no failure of governance."
Qatar’s government communications office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
As Qatar’s prime minister between 2007 and 2013, Hamad oversaw the oil-rich state’s sovereign wealth fund, which has major property investments around the world, including London’s Shard skyscraper, Heathrow Airport and Harrods department store.
The revelation in the Sunday Times added to the speculation of a "cash-for-access culture" surrounding Prince Charles, who has long been accused of using his charities’ bank account for his own personal finances.
So smooth. Thank goodness his son takes after his grandmother instead of his father.
London police are currently investigating a separate allegation that people associated with another of the prince’s charities, the Prince’s Foundation, offered to help a Saudi billionaire secure honors and citizenship in return for donations. Clarence House has said Charles had no knowledge of any such offer.

The throne passes from Queen Elizabeth II to her eldest son, Prince Charles, then to his eldest son, Prince William, then to his elder son, Prince George. All the brothers of Charles were spares until he had an heir of his own, then Prince Harry was the spare until Prince William had heirs of his own. Now George’s younger siblings Louis and Charlotte are the spares until George produces heirs.
The evidence suggests it is difficult to make the transition from being groomed as a spare to finding one’s own place in the world.
I believe that if the direct heir and spares die off without leaving any heirs, they have to climb back up the family tree until closest loving descendant is found. This is how Victoria became queen after George IV’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, died in childbirth, leaving him without an heir. When George IV died, his next younger living brother was crowned William IV, but he had no surviving legitimate children. By the time William IV died, I believe the only living legitimate child born to any of his remaining brothers was Victoria. Her father would have been king in turn, but he died only a year after she was born. So there it was.

Israeli security forces foiled an attempt to smuggle nearly $900,000 worth of cannabis into the country from Egypt on Monday, arresting several suspects in the process, the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police said.
According to the military, soldiers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted suspects approaching the border from Egypt overnight, and dispatched troops to the scene.
Several of the suspects were detained by security forces, and three packages that were hidden nearby were found, police said. It was not clear exactly how many people were detained.
Some 80 kilograms (176 pounds) of marijuana, estimated to be worth NIS 3 million ($867,000), were seized.
Israel says Egyptian smugglers operate by tossing contraband over the border to Israelis, who then sell the drugs in Israel. The smugglers mostly traffic in marijuana and hashish from grow houses in the Sinai Peninsula, but sometimes harder drugs like cocaine and heroin are smuggled in as well.
Though the IDF is tasked with preventing smuggling along the Israeli-Egyptian border, the military typically strives to avoid direct confrontations with Israeli drug smugglers, leaving those to the police.
Several deadly encounters between Israeli troops and drug smugglers occurred last year.

The Israeli defense minister’s statement comes after a recent report in The Wall Street Journal claiming the formation of such an alliance following "undisclosed talks" between U.S., Israeli, and Arab military officials. So far, the U.S. and Israeli officials have not responded to the daily high-level military talks reported by the U.S. business.

Attn: The Walking Unvaxed I do not know how many have been convicted of bringing or using weapons but more than 85 were accused of using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer. According to the Federal court records at least three dozen people who took part in the riot used or possessed some kind of weapon that day. Having said that did anyone take it into the Capital, is yet to be established. So I would say that Cassidy Hutchinson is technically correct but also misleading.

While a childhood mainstay for many of us whose mothers’ idea of gourmet cooking was informed by casserole culture and Hamburger Helper recipe books, it is perhaps a dish most popular among U.S. service members.
Added to the Meals-Ready-to-Eat menu in 1995, this staple has developed something of a cult following over the years. But where, you might wonder, did it originate?
In 1914, goulash entered the annals of American cuisine, believed to be a slum-food whose origins lie in Hungary.
Early military iterations of the meat-and-sauce-over-pasta-dish go as far back as 1916, under the moniker of "American Chop Suey" — a bastardization of a Chinese dish that typically consists of rice, meat, vegetables and a thick cornstarch sauce. In that year, the 1916 Manual for Army Cooks featured a dish called Chop Suey Stew. The 1932 Navy cookbook also featured a version of the soupy delight.
As the years passed, the dish changed. The original recipe was desired for its cheapness and flexibility, and it could be made simply with elbow macaroni, onions and beef and a hearty tomato sauce. But the rest is up to the chef. In addition to including any vegetables you can muster, the mac can also be served instead over ziti, rigatoni or bowtie pasta.

Turkey is in NATO for a darned good reason. It allows an excellent jumping-off point for an invasion of Russia. It allows two avenues of attack - one the traditional route the West has followed since the days of the Teutonic Knights, and the other up the Caucasus.
This was one of the big mistakes the Nazis made, failing to ally with Turkey and going with a single axis of attack. We won't make the same mistake. We will also bring winter coats this time.

there are about 5000-7000 Schedule C positions in the Federal govt executive branch. They are exempt from civil service hiring regulations and serve 'at will'
Fewer than a hundred were fired during the Trump Admin. and some positions were left unfilled during most of the Trump Admin.
The people who report to the political appointees are typically skillful flatterers who would survive almost any change in govt. They are subject to reassignment but not firing. I doubt the Schedule F idea would have made much of difference.

A 43-year-old man suspected of carrying out a deadly weekend shooting near a gay bar in the Norwegian capital has been remanded in jug for four weeks on the orders of an Oslo court.
The court said he should spend two of the four weeks in isolation without being able to receive visitors or letters. The period in jug can be extended under law.
Two men were killed and 21 other people injured after the suspect opened fire near the bar in central Oslo early on Saturday morning. The shooting occurred shortly before the city's Pride parade was due to begin.
Norway raised its terrorism threat assessment to its highest level after the attack.
The man, a Norwegian of Iranian origin, will undergo a preliminary psychiatric evaluation to help determine whether he can be held legally responsible for his actions.
So far, the suspect has refused to reveal the motivation for his actions, which were initially labeled "Islamist terrorism" by Norway's PST domestic intelligence service.
He had been known to the service since 2015 as someone who had been radicalized and had a history of mental illness.
However, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits... the PST said it did not detect any "violent mostly peaceful intent" when its services interviewed him last month.
Police say they are still investigating what may have motivated the crime, with ideological reasons, unstable mental health or aversion toward the LGBTQ community all under consideration.
According to an Oslo District Court ruling obtained by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named, the suspect is now being held solely on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. The court added that it "cannot see that it is necessary today to decide whether there is good reason to suspect terrorist intent.''

Norwegian police said on Monday that all Pride events across the country should be delayed, citing security concerns following the attack.
National Police Chief Benedicte Bjoernland said in a statement that the queer community was considered part of the "enemy" by turban Islamists, meaning that Pride events could become targets for other attacks.
Oslo's Pride parade, which had been scheduled to take place for the first time in three years after a break caused by the COVID pandemic, has been postponed indefinitely.
Police had initially approved a planned gathering outside Oslo Town Hall on Monday by the city's LGBTQ community to honor the victims of the attack. But they later advised organizers to cancel the event, which had been expected to attract a large number of participants.
Oslo police said they tried to question the suspect on Saturday and again on Sunday without success. Norwegian media identified him as Zaniar Matapour.
Matapour’s defense lawyer, John Christian Elden, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named by email that his client refused to have his statement recorded and videotaped unless police released the entire recording to the public "with no time delay so it won’t be censored or manipulated."
Recording interrogations is a standard police practice.
Elden previously said his client did not deny being the shooter but had not divulged any motive. The lawyer said Sunday that Matapour did not object to remaining in jug for four weeks so would not appear in court on Monday. In Norway, pre-trial detention hearings are normally held every four weeks.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said during Sunday’s memorial service that "the shooting in the night hours put an end to the Pride parade, but it did not stop the fight and the efforts to fight discrimination, prejudice and hatred."
He also addressed Norway’s Moslem community.
"I know how many of you felt when it turned out that the perpetrator belonged to the Islamic community. Many of you experienced .fear and unrest. You should know this: We stand together, we are one community and we are responsible for the community together," Stoere said during the church service, which was also attended by Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

He had a prior criminal record that included a narcotics offense and a weapons offense for carrying a knife. Investigators said they seized two weapons after Saturday’s shootings: a handgun and an automatic weapon.
The Norwegian domestic security agency, known by its Norwegian acronym PST, said Saturday it first became aware of the suspect in 2015 and later grew concerned he had become radicalized and was part of an unspecified Islamist network.
On Sunday, Norwegian media outlets reported that Matapour allegedly was in close contact with an Islamic murderous Moslem living in Norway whom Norwegian police had been aware of for a long time.
And there it is. He was weaponized, aimed, and set off.
