The Last Airworthy S-3B Viking Is Set To Fly Off Into The Sunset

NASA is retiring the last Lockheed S-3B Viking still flying today, marking the end of a nearly fifty-year career for the iconic aircraft. While NASA’s Viking was used as a research aircraft, the U.S. Navy’s S-3s saw widespread use throughout the Cold War as anti-submarine warfare aircraft and even as a Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) aircraft, before moving on to serve in other roles, including as aerial refueling tankers and for electronic intelligence gathering.

NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, which operates the S-3B in question, today announced its impending retirement, which will follow a final ceremonial flight. “This is the last S-3B flying today anywhere in the world,” said Jim Demers, the Center's Flight Operations Manager. “It’s been a workhorse for NASA, but we just can’t source its unique parts anymore.”

Spying on Trump, Judge Napolitano, and Tucker Carlson
[Creators.com] Judge Napolitano reveals the Deep State.
In March 2017, I received a tip from a friend in the intelligence community that the British Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ — the United Kingdom's domestic and foreign spies — had been asked by the CIA to spy on candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 U.S presidential election campaign. He elaborated that Trump's claim that "someone tapped my wires" was essentially true. The tip was potentially explosive, so I ran it past two other friends in the intelligence community, and they confirmed it.

When I went public with this, all hell broke loose in my professional life. The British spies denied spying on Trump, who by now was the president of the United States. Former Obama administration folks denied asking the Brits to do this and denied that it was done.
Wait. The Government lied?
I was accused of fabricating this so as to make Trump look good. The prime minister of the U.K. had one of her deputies call my bosses at Fox and demand that I recant what I had said or be fired. Fox asked me to lay low for 10 days, which I did, but Fox backed me when I explained the verifications conducted by my sources.
And the compliant media...well, you know.
During one of my meetings with my sources, they told me that the National Security Administration, America's 60,000-person strong domestic spy apparatus, was listening to our conversations and monitoring our texts and emails.

It is utterly terrifying to realize that your daily communications are being scrutinized by the government without probable cause and without a search warrant, both of which are required by the Fourth Amendment. It gives you pause before communicating; pause that churns the stomach; pause that is profoundly un-American.

Last week, my Fox colleague Tucker Carlson had a similar experience when an NSA whistleblower revealed to him that the NSA was monitoring his communications.
Do go read the whole thing - who initiated NSA spying, the backlash from the deep state here and abroad, and the unconstitutionality of it all.

Page 66 - Live in Your Reality

Admiral Jim Stockdale was a navy pilot who, in 1965 was shot down during the Vietnam War. After parachuting into enemy territory, he was taken prisponer. Over the next seven and a half years, he was severely beaten and tortured by his captors, until he was released in 1973. During his time in captivity and despite his continued mistreatment by the North Vietnamese, Stockdale survived while he watched other men die. During an interview with author Jim Collins, when Stockdale was asked his thoughts on who didn't make it out of the camps, he said "it was the optimists - they died of broken hearts."

Although having a level of optimism is important, facing the facts of your reality matters even more. If you're focused on only a positive outcome, you may find it impossible to cope should a less favorable one arise. When I was on the president's protective detail, I was optimistic that my security plan was strong enough to deter any assassination attempt, but I certainly wasn't arrogant or delusional enough to think it could never happen. I accepted the possibility which in turn, kept my mind sharp and open to finding solutions to unexpected problems and unforeseen threats. As an agent responsible for the lives of my protectees, my colleagues, the public, and myself, I knew it was better to wear clear glasses and see things as they truly were rather than rose colored ones that gave me a skewed version of the truth.

Your ability to accept a situation - the real situation - will ultimately help you overcome it. This means that when unplanned shit happens, and it will, you must forgo the I can't believe this is happening to me attitude, and instead adopt the mindset of This is happening to me. This is my reality. So now what?

Afghanistan
Russia Says Afghan Situation Can Swiftly Worsen, Pledges Help if Needed
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that the situation in Afghanistan had a tendency to swiftly deteriorate and said Moscow was ready to defend its regional allies if necessary.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday told Emomali Rakhmon, the president of Tajikistan, that Moscow would help the impoverished former Soviet republic contend with the fallout from NATO's exit from neighbouring Afghanistan if needed.

Rakhmon has ordered the mobilisation of 20,000 military reservists to bolster his country's border with Afghanistan after more than 1,000 Afghan security personnel fled across the frontier in response to Taliban militant advances.

Lavrov, speaking on Wednesday during a visit to Laos, said Russia was ready to use its military base in Tajikistan, one of its biggest abroad, to ensure the security of its allies in the region, part of the former Soviet Union and an area where Moscow tries to retain influence.

"We are closely watching what is happening in Afghanistan where the situation has a tendency to swiftly deteriorate including against the backdrop of the hasty exit of American and other NATO troops," said Lavrov.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
US slams punitive razing of family home of Tapuach junction terrorist
[Jpost] Prime Minister Naftali Bennett pushed back at the United States over its condemnation of Israel's policy of demolishing the homes of Palestinians who are charged and or convicted for terror attacks that claim lives.

"The Prime Minister appreciates and respects the US," his office said.

"At the same time, [the Prime Minister] acts solely in accordance with security considerations of the State of Israel and need to protection of the lives of Israeli citizens."

It spoke up just hours after the US embassy in Jerusalem slammed the IDF razing of the West Bank family home of Muntasir Shalabi early Thursday morning. Shalabi has been indicted for killing Yehuda Guetta, 19, in a drive-by shooting at the Tapuach junction at the beginning of May.

"The home of an entire family should not be demolished for the actions of one individual," the Embassy spokesperson said on Thursday.

"We believe it is critical for all parties to refrain from unilateral steps that exacerbate tensions and undercut efforts to advance a negotiated two-state solution; this certainly includes the punitive demolition of Palestinian homes," the spokesperson added.

Bennett's exchange with the US is his most serious point of discord since his government was sworn in last month. It comes as Bennett is preparing for his first visit to the White House this summer.

Shalabi holds US citizenship, as does his wife and their seven children, three of whom live in the house and four of whom live in the US.

Early Thursday morning the the IDF reported that it had demolished the home located in Turrmus Aiya near Ramallah.

The High Court of Justice had rejected a petition against the demolition as well as a subsequent appeal, filed by the left-wing NGO HaMoked. It had argued that the structure was not Shalabi's primary home, but rather that of his estranged wife from whom he separated years ago.

"This was the only home of a woman who had effectively separated from the suspect years ago, while he lived most of the time with his other wives and children in homes he owned in the United States," HaMoked said.
Goodness. How many wives does the man have? Or are they all ex-wives, except when he drops by to visit?
"Thus, the suspect did not have significant 'residential ties' to the house."

The NGO also argued that Shalabi suffered from mental illness and had "repeatedly stated that he was motivated by suicidal thoughts."

Shalabi was indicted in June on charges of murdering Guetta, as well as for the attempted murder of two students, also injured in the shooting.

Five other Palestinians were also indicted for the obstruction of justice because they provided Shalabi with a hiding place during the initial manhunt.

-Great Cultural Revolution
14-year-old carjacker/murderer sentenced to detention
[HotAir] Ever since the murder of Uber Eats driver Mohammad Anwar by two underage girls, questions have remained over how they should be punished. At one point, the possibility was raised that they might get off with little more than a slap on the wrist due to their age and various “sentencing reform” efforts intended to keep juveniles out of jail. The final result wasn’t quite as bad as it might have been, however, and now plea deals have been reached with both girls and sentences have been imposed. The younger of the two, who is now 14, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and will be held in juvenile detention until she turns 21. (The Hill)

While I suppose this is better than just cutting them loose, it still seems a bit generous, doesn’t it? The younger girl had all additional charges for carjacking, robbery, and aggravated assault dropped. The older girl, who pleaded guilty to felony murder, similarly had all of her other charges dropped and will also be kept in detention until she turns 21.

What happens after that? Looking over the applicable laws for D.C. when dealing with juvenile offenders, it would appear that they will simply be released with their records being sealed, though there may be some parole involved. Is that really “justice” in this case? What happened to Mohammad Anwar, a legal immigrant who was just trying to earn a living through the gig economy, was something straight out of a horror movie.

We can talk about rehabilitation versus incarceration until we’re blue in the face, but it’s a heavy lift to claim that we’re just talking about “two children” here. Those girls didn’t just decide to drop their chalk and walk away from their hopscotch game one day and go after Anwar. They showed up with a taser and were prepared to execute a clinical carjacking. They had clearly already fallen under the influence of a gang. Their names and records are unavailable, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that this was far from the first violent crime they had engaged in.

And what’s going to happen when they are released? They will have few prospects for jobs with this hanging over their heads, but they will probably have achieved hero status among their peers. If they return to their old ways, the only difference will be that they will wind up in adult court after the next time they try to carjack someone.

Afghanistan
Putin may veto Biden's post-Afghanistan plans
[HotAir] - It’s understandable that the Biden administration couldn’t release all of the details of our plans to pull out of Afghanistan to the public in advance. It would be far too easy for the terrorists and our other adversaries to take advantage of such information to our detriment and that of our allies. But the more we learn of how this entire bug-out operation was organized, the more troubling it becomes. The most recent revelation involves how we plan on monitoring what’s going on in the country after we’re gone and what preparations are being made in the event that we need to intervene in the future.

We already learned that things were looking bleak at our embassy, as well as at the airport which currently represents the only effective means of egress. Yesterday we found out that the Taliban has been scooping up our abandoned weapons and military vehicles and parading them in front of the international press corps. But even assuming that we manage to get all of our people and those who helped us out of Afghanistan, where will they all go? We need a centralized base of operations to monitor what goes on there, preferably a place allowing the option of launching military action if required. It’s now being suggested that we set up a base of operations in a neighboring country, probably either Uzbekistan or Tajikistan. But there are several problems with that proposal and the biggest problem’s name is Vladimir Putin.
The U.S. may need the help of an old foe in extricating itself from America’s longest war: Vladimir Putin.

The Biden administration has in recent weeks quietly engaged Central Asian governments in the hope of using one or more of the countries as bases after the withdrawal is complete. The U.S. has two main requests: a staging post for keeping an eye on terrorist activity in Afghanistan, and temporarily hosting thousands of Afghans seeking visas.

But Moscow could use its significant economic and military influence in the region to jam up those plans, U.S. officials and experts say.
Because Russians are inherently evil? Or Tit-for-Tat? Or just to cut down on CIA opium trade?

Sky News Shows Taliban Seizing Abandoned US Bases & "Treasure Trove" Of Weapons, Ammo
[ZERO] Simultaneous to global headlines spotlighting the hasty "in the middle of the night" US forces quitting Bagram airbase for good, which briefly resulted in looting as Afghan security was caught by surprise, Sky News has aired exclusive shocking footage of the Taliban seizing freshly abandoned US bases (or perhaps not-so-shocking considering the constant follies of America's longest ever war).

"The Taliban are on the march and gaining territory at an astonishing rate," the Sky News segment narratives. "They smell victory," the report says. "They want to show us the treasure trove of military riches they seized with it."

#11  The Taliban have a good propaganda operation. The Brits, as usual, are convinced that the Yanks are lucky, but hopeless retards with more money than sense. Maybe propaganda alone will help the Taliban win. But if it fails, they had better have supplies lined up. Because the odds and ends from the departure of US troops will need to go a long way to match the $5b a year Uncle Sam is throwing at the Afghan Army. Najibullah lasted 3 years after the Soviets left. He lost a good bit of territory at the beginning, but the lines stabilized, and the mujahideen could make no headway until Yeltsin finally cut Najibullah off. Najibullah literally ran out of gas.

Now the stupid Thai govt (totally in bed w/ChiComms) are - how you say - conflicted on what do with 1.5 million doses of Pfizer the USG is donating. They risk embarrassing the PRC if they give it to frontline medical folks as that's admitting ChiComVac is poop. The few rational officials said the Pfizer stuff has to go to the medical people first so they can care for the sick. To say the average Thai person is outraged is an understatement. The PRC has all but forbidden any other vaccine from being administered in Thailand.

There's Been a Horrifying Discovery in a Dumpster at an Ohio Abortion Clinic
[PJ] The pro-death ghouls on the left will stop at nothing to make sure abortion is dangerous, legal(ish), and common—quite a departure from the days when Bill Clinton said it should be "safe, legal, and rare." The powerful death cult even opposes commonsense measures to ensure that abortion clinics are safe and sanitary. They pitch a fit anytime lawmakers or health officials try to force them to clean up their filthy clinics or hold them to the same standards as other medical facilities. One thing I’ve learned over the years of being an advocate for unborn babies is that abortion proponents don’t value human life—at all. They may pay lip service to the concept, screeching about abortion being a human right, but they don’t mean it.

Maria Bartiromo interviews Tucker Carlson (video)
[Red State] "Yesterday, I learned that — and this is going to come out soon — that the NSA leaked the contents of my emails to journalists in an effort to discredit me. I know because I got a call from one of them saying ’oh, this is what your email was about,’ " Carlson said.

"So, it is not in any way a figment of my imagination. It’s confirmed, it’s true," he continued, adding that Biden administration is trying to gain "leverage" to threaten "opposition journalists."

"It’s happening to me right now, and I think it’s shocking and I don’t think we should put up with it in a free country," he said.

When host Maria Bartiromo asked if there was no way anyone else could have seen the emails, Carlson said the only other person was his executive producer.

He added that just before his show aired on Tuesday, he got a call from a reporter who read the email back to him.

"There is no possibility that anyone else could have known. And then again yesterday I get a call right before air, like 7:15, from a journalist I know and like, not many left, but I do like this person. He repeated back to me what’s in my email, he got it because the NSA leaked it, so, yes, entirely real," Carlson said.

The NSA declined to comment.

Democrats dug themselves an election integrity hole, courts may bury them in it
[Just The News] For months now, President Biden and key Democrats have waged endless battle against state laws designed to improve the integrity of elections, ones that make voting easier and cheating harder.

From the start, the mission was complicated since its message ran smack into strong American sentiments in the court of public opinion: Polling shows three quarters of Americans support integrity measures like voter ID that Biden called "Jim Crow in the 21st century."

Now the Democrat train has run into a similar harsh reality in the courts of law, where justices and judges alike have concluded integrity measures aren't unconstitutional if they aren't designed to suppress based on race or skin color or socio-economic status.

The latest blow to the Jim Crow 2.0 argument was delivered Wednesday, when a federal judge refused to issue a preliminary injunction blocking Georgia's new election integrity law.

Georgia has been the Democrats' ground zero, the first state to enact comprehensive voting reform after the contested November 2020 elections. From activist Stacy Abrams to Attorney General Merrick Garland, the Peach State law has come under withering assault from the left.

To win the injunction, the left-leaning Coalition for Good Governance needed to show they had a high likelihood of succeeding. But U.S. District Judge J.P. Boule batted down their main constitutional argument.

"The Court is not persuaded by Plaintiffs' argument for a bright line exception to Purcell because they have alleged First Amendment harm. Plaintiffs have not provided authority, nor is the Court aware of any, that would support this interpretation of the law," Boulee ruled in an 11-page ruling.

The judge also concluded he was disinclined to "change the law in the ninth inning" when Georgia has runoff elections for seats in the Georgia state House planned for later this month.

"The risk of disrupting the administration of an ongoing election ... outweigh the alleged harm to plaintiffs at this time," he noted.

Espionage: Two ISI agents charged by NIA for leaking vital information relating to Army
[OneIndia] The National Investigation Agency has filed a chargesheet against two ISI operatives in connection with the Hapur (UP) espionage case. The NIA has charged Saurabh Sharma and Anas Yakub Giteli under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Official Secrets Act.

The case was registered at Gomti Nagar in February after it was revealed that the accused persons were sharing confidential information about the Indian Army with the ISI in Pakistain. The case was later taken over by the NIA.

Investigations revealed that the ISI had had hatched a conspiracy to obtain restricted and confidential information from the officials of Indian Army by luring them through a pseudonymous entity named 'Neha Sharma' operated by them.

Saurabh Sharma, being a serving signalman in Indian Army had shared strategic and sensitive information such as deployment/movement of troops, location, strength and composition of parties of Indian Army.

In consideration for supply of such sensitive information, he had received funds from multiple sources including Pak sources and also from co- accused Anas Yakub Giteli.

Investigation has also found that accused Saurabh Sharma had also received funds from Imran Giteli, elder brother of Anas Yakub Giteli.

Hizbul narco terror: NIA arrests key accused from Amritsar
[OneIndia] The National Investigation Agency has arrested a narcotics trafficker of the Hizbul Mujahideen
...Party of Holy Warriors, founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989. One of the Pak sock puppets waging jihad in Indian Kashmir. It was originally organized as the armed wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. In 1990, Dar declared Hizbul as the sword arm of Jamaat. Hizbul murdered many of the pro-independence intelligentsia in Kashmir. After the organization was taken over by Syed Salahuddin Dar and several other ex-Hizb leaders were assassinated between 2001 and 2003...
. The accused has been identified as Gurjant Singh a resident of Amritsar.

Following the arrest of Hilal Ahmed and seizure of Rs 29 lakh from his possession a case was registered in Amritsar. Hilal was an overground worker and a close associate of Riyaz Naikoo, the then commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen in Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
The NIA said that Hilal had gone to Amritsar to collect funds that were from the proceeds of narcotics sale. The funds were being used to further terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NIA said that Singh is a narco and would illegally purchase drugs from one Bikramjit Singh and later selling it locally. The proceeds collected from the sale of such heroin were sent to Kashmir and Pakistain through hawala, the NIA also said.

One gunned down as alert Indian Army foil major infiltration bid by Pak terrorists
[OneIndia] The Indian Army has foiled an infiltration bid by Pak terrorists. The Army engaged the turbans in a fierce firefight to foil the infiltration bid.

One terrorist was bumped off in the firefight and his body was recovered. The Army in a note said that a group of Pak turbans made an attempt to infiltrate across the Line of Control in the Naoshera Sector, District Rajouri (J&K).

Alert Army troops thwarted the infiltration bid by suitably employing an integrated surveillance grid along with domination by fire, and engaging the turbans in a fierce firefight in which one terrorist was neutralised and his body has been recovered.

Also, war like stores including an AK 47 rifle, four magazines of AK 47 with ammunition and two hand grenades have been recovered from the terrorist. This action by alert Army troops displays resolve of Indian Army to thwart any misadventure on the Line of Control, the Army said.

Such incidents are being reported despite Pakistain agreeing to maintain the ceasefire. On February 25 this year, India and Pakistain said that the ceasefire was being maintained since February 24. The two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Control and all other sectors in a free, frank and cordial atmosphere, a joint statement read.

In addition to these infiltration bids, Pakistain controlled drones have been spotted in India. Last week, a first of its kind drone attack was reported at the IAF base in Jammu. Over the past couple of months, several drone sightings have been reported. At least 300 drones have been spotted since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". • All five of the Bidens have suffered from either drug or alcohol addiction and had spells in treatment centers – some at the orders of a judge

  • Hallie - Beau's widow who became Hunter's lover - has been to rehab four times, costing over $100,000 and some of it allegedly paid for by Joe Biden, texts reveal

  • Texts from Ashley, 40, on Hunter's laptop reveal that she has also had to get sober after falling prey to addiction and having run-ins with the law and sent Hallie scathing messages

#1  Garcia, who teaches the Marxist theory

Seems the USAF Academy is taking the concept of Red Air a bit too far. A tour of duty in Norad Alaska or Greenland might refocus them on the USAF mission.

#2  I think I will go with what MLK Jr. said: "the idea that we should judge someone on the content of his character rather than the color of his skin." Skip all the nonsense and gobbledygook invented by the social sciences. Truth is truth.

CRT smacks of discrimination as does affirmative action. Meritocracy and selecting the best person for the job will result in stronger organizations--regardless of sex or skin color.

US tech firm hit by REvil ransomware attack is NOT able to bring its service online after CEO vowed it would be back within 'hours'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The U.S. software firm hit by a REvil ransomware attack that crippled hundreds of companies worldwide has failed to bring its services online after discovering an 'issue' that delayed the redeployment.

Kaseya, the Miami-based company at the center of the hack, said in an alert on Tuesday night that 'an issue was discovered that has blocked the release' of its key service, which provides system monitoring and management for IT service providers.

'We apologize for the delay and R&D and operations are continuing to work around the clock to resolve this issue and restore service,' the company added, saying another status update would be issued on Wednesday morning.

The delay in the planned deployment came as another embarrassment to the company, soon after CEO Fred Voccola vowed in a video message that service would be restored 'in the coming hours'.

Critical Race Theory Proponent Ibram X. Kendi to Speak at Teachers' Union Conference
[BREITBART] The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) will feature Critical Race Theory

...teaches that skin color is the most important characteristic of any person, which translates to separate but equal with a different bunch in charge. All whites are born racist and racism permeates every aspect of society, which should be dismantled and the remains turned over to the kind of dipshit who pushes this nonsense...
champion Ibram X. Kendi Wednesday during its biennial TEACH (Together Educating America’s Children) professional development conference.

Kendi, the author of Antiracist Baby, has received the backing of the Biden Education Department.

In April, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona’s office proposed a rule that called for the development of "culturally responsive teaching" in American History and Civics and held up the widely discredited "1619 Project" as a model for schools to teach these subjects.

The rule intends to establish priorities for grants in American History and Civics Education programs that incorporate Critical Race Theory-based curricula, such as the "1619 Project."

The department elaborated on its proposal, with a reference to Kendi:

Accordingly, schools across the country are working to incorporate anti-racist practices into teaching and learning. As the scholar Ibram X. Kendi has expressed, "[a]n antiracist idea is any idea that suggests the racial groups are equals in all their apparent differences—that there is nothing right or wrong with any racial group. Antiracist ideas argue that racist policies are the cause of racial inequities." ... It is critical that the teaching of American history and civics creates learning experiences that validate and reflect the diversity, identities, histories, contributions, and experiences of all students.

US base in Syria hit with 14 rockets
Via Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin. To see photos click here.

[GulfTimes] Rocket and drone attacks yesterday targeted bases in Iraq and Syria hosting US forces that are part of an international coalition fighting the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Fourteen rockets were fired at an air base hosting American troops in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, causing minor injuries to two personnel, the US-led coalition said.

It was the latest in a spate of attacks on US military and diplomatic facilities in Iraq, blamed on gangs within a state-sponsored paramilitary force.

US forces, who have 2,500 troops deployed in Iraq as part of the anti-IS coalition, have been targeted almost 50 times this year in the country.

A bully boy group called Revenge of al-Muhandis Brigade grabbed credit and vowed to defeat the "brutal occupation", according to the US-based SITE intelligence group which monitors bad boy groups.

The bully boy group is named after Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis of Iraq’s Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary alliance, who was killed in a US dronezap early last year along with the revered Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, SITE said.

Late last month, the US carried out deadly air strikes against fighters in both Iraq and Syria.

Yesterday, the Ain al-Assad base was attacked by 14 rockets that "landed on the base & perimeter," coalition front man Wayne Marotto wrote on Twitter.

"Two personnel sustained minor injuries," he said, adding that the attack also damaged local homes and a mosque.

Iraqi security forces said the rocket launcher had been hidden inside a truck carrying bags of flour.

US forces on Monday night shot down an armed drone above their embassy in Baghdad, according to Iraqi security officials.

American defence systems fired rockets into the air in the capital, said AFP news hounds, with Iraqi security sources saying the salvos had taken out an explosive-laden drone.

Just hours earlier, rockets had also been fired towards Ain al-Assad.

Across the border in Syria, where fighters have fought alongside the Damascus regime in the decade-old civil war, Kurdish-led forces also reported attempted attacks near a coalition base.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said they repelled drone attacks near the base in the Omar oil field in the country’s east, in the second such operation in days.

"Our frontline forces against IS and coalition forces in the area of the Omar oil field dealt with drone attacks," it said, adding that the drones had caused no damage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor with sources inside Syria, said militias had probably launched the drones from a rural area outside the town of al-Mayadeen southwest of the oil field.

Taliban launch first assault on a provincial capital, are pushed back; 600+ turbans toes up across Afghanistan yesterday
  • [Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Fierce fighting has erupted in the western city of Qala-i-Naw, capital of Badghis

  • Footage apparently showed people lining the streets and welcoming the Taliban

  • It comes days after the US withdrew from Afghanistan after 20 years of fighting

  • Afghan army soldiers were seen surrendering to the Taliban and giving up arms

  • Over a thousand soldiers fled to Tajikistan following jihadists clashes on Sunday

Taliban’s hours rule over Qala-e-naw city ended

[KhaamaPress] Ministry of defense in a Facebook post said that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
fighters ousted from Qala-e-naw city of western Badghis province by Afghan government force members.

The ministry also said that ANDSF personnel commenced patrolling the city as normal.

Talibs were driven from the building of provincial National Directorate office, national police headquarter and the building of central prison in city, Ministry of defense says.

Spokesperson of Ministry of Interior affairs Tariq Arian in his recent tweet said that Qala-e-naw city has been cleared of Taliban fighters and the city is now fully under ANDSF members’ control. Arian added that the fighters were inflicted heavy casualty.

Spokespersons of the Taliban have not commented on the issue yet.

The central city of Badghis province was toppled by the Taliban this noon after the neighboring districts fell to the Death Eaters. It was the first time that bucolic provincial capital falls to Taliban since the fighters launched offensive operation toppling over one hundred districts mostly in northern Afghanistan.

It comes as the ministry of defense announced that over six hundred Talibs killed as a result land and aerial operation by ANDSF in past 24 hours.
Tolo News adds:
Footage released on social media indicated that the Taliban had reached the prison and was releasing the prisoners in Qala-e-Naw.

Oxfam Calls on Italy to Stop Financing Libyan Coast Guards
Not surprising that Oxfam approves of human trafficking.
[LIBYAREVIEW] The global NGO, Oxfam has asked the Italian government to stop funding Libya’s Coast Guard, stressing the need for a change of approach with the direct management of migration flows.Oxfam said Italian funding for the coastiess is increasing despite the fact that people "are continuing to die along the central Mediterranean route, and the modalities of intervention of the so-called Libyan coastiess are at this point well known."

The Italian Cabinet has decided to allocate an additional €500,000 in 2021 to support the coastiess’ activities, for a total of €32.6 million spent since 2017.

Oxfam Italia’s policy advisor for humanitarian emergencies, Paolo Pezzati, said that Italian the government of Mario Draghi is acting in perfect continuity on migration policies. Pezzati asked parties in the ruling majority to immediately end funding in 2021 for the coastiess.

According to Oxfam, "what is needed now is a firm change of approach, a direct management of flows, and not the mere closure of borders delegated to countries like Libya or The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Afghanistan
Kabul: 6 Policemen Killed in Taliban Attack in Paghman
[ToloNews] At least six coppers were killed in a Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
attack in the Qala-e-Haidar Khan village of Paghman district in the west of Kabul.

Security sources said that the Taliban launched an attack around 2:00 am on Tuesday night and seized all the weapons and other military equipment after killing the soldiers.

The security sources said that the Taliban also sustained heavy casualties.

The Taliban also tried to set ablaze the police checkpoint, but the security forces arrived and the Taliban fighters fled, said the Ministry of Interior.

"The Taliban fled the area, we have launched a clearance operation in the area," said Tariq Arian, a front man for the Ministry of Interior.

"Rockets were fired, there was also the sound of AK47 and mortars, the fighting started at 2:10 am and finished at around 2:50 am," said Rahimullah, a local resident.

Security sources said the Taliban fighters hid in residential areas after the attack.

"We tried to hide in a corner, all of us were frightened," said Hamid, a resident in Paghman.

"We have a company here, the security situation in the area is very tense," said Zia ul Haq
...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988...
, a resident in Paghman.

Tuesday night's attack was the second major attack in the area in the past week.

Last week, unidentified button men targeted a police ranger vehicle with a missile and lit another on fire.

Government forces in Syria's Deir ez-Zor seize houses of citizens displaced
[NPASYRIA] Abdulsamad al-Ali, a resident of the city of al-Tabni in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, is helpless to do anything about the seizure of the home of his brother, who was displaced to the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), by Syrian government forces.

Forces and security apparatuses affiliated with the regime regularly seize properties of civilians who were displaced to the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor to the areas run by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) during battles between the SDF and ISIS.

In March 2019, the SDF, supported by the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, expelled ISIS fighters from their last headquarters in al-Baghouz town, in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Government forces, supported by Russia, controlled other areas in Deir ez-Zor. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
the war, the living crisis and the security pursuits prompted a number of residents to move to areas run by the AANES.

"A patrol of the government forces, accompanied by the municipal officials, informed the family who resides in my brother’s house to vacate the house within 48 hours," al-Ali said.

"I am helpless to return the home of my brother, who the government forces described as "separatist" because he fled during the battles to the areas under the AANES’s control."

Afghanistan
US Withdrawal From Afghanistan Nearly Complete: CENTCOM
[ToloNews] The US has completed "more than 90 percent" of its withdrawal from Afghanistan, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

This follows the US and coalition forces pullout from Bagram Airfield, which for nearly 20 years was the largest US base in Afghanistan.

"As of July 5, Department of Defense has retrograded the equivalent of approximately 984 C-17 aircraft- loads of material out of Afghanistan and has turned over nearly 17,074 pieces of equipment to the Defense Logistics Agency for disposition," the release stated.

CENTCOM did not say how many US troops remain in Afghanistan. Between 2,500 and 3,500 were in the country when President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. We get to suffer the consequences...
announced in April that all US forces would withdraw by Sept. 11, according to reports.

On Tuesday, John F. Kirby, Pentagon front man, at a presser said that the US Defense Department was in active discussions with the State Department regarding "the nature of what that capability will be."

He mentioned that there's a carrier strike group in the region and facilities throughout the Middle East that could be useful if needed.

"Our commitment to the future of a stable and secure Afghanistan has not changed. It's just going to look different. We're just not going to be on the ground the way we are now," he said.

Kirby also discussed other bilateral activities with Afghanistan.

There are still contractors in Afghanistan providing support to their security forces and air force, he said. "We are actively working [on ways] in which that contract support can be done remotely or virtually or even physically outside the country."

About 650 troops are expected to remain to protect the US Embassy in Kabul, while others may be deployed to protect the capital’s airport alongside Ottoman Turkish troops, according to reports.

US military equips Danab Forces amid crackdown against Al-Shabaab
[Garowe] The United States military has handed over armored vehicles to the Danab Special Forces, who have been leading operations against al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
Death Eaters in Central and Southern Somalia, which were concluded early this week ahead of the next phase.

For years, the US has been a crucial security partner in the fight against al-Shabaab, offering both logistical and monetary support, in the process of rebuilding the Somali National Army [SNA], which is supposed to take security responsibilities from foreign troops next year.

Tuesday's donations were received by Chief of Defense Forces General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh, who has been coordinating a crackdown against al-Shabaab in Middle and Lower Shabelle in recent months. He's one of the few military bosses to participate in a crackdown.

"US Military officials in Somalia have today handed over armored vehicles to the Somali National Army. SNA Chief, Odawa Yusuf thanked US officials for their support in the war against terrorism. These vehicles will be used by DANAB forces in their fight against terrorists," state media reported.

Danab Special Forces are trained by the US and are instrumental in leading sophisticated operations against the al-Qaeda linked group. The US has so far trained close to 2,000 Danab Forces in the process of rebuilding a strong military.

In January, the US withdrew 700 troops from Somalia in what former President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and whatever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
said was part of his "cost-saving strategy". However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
the troops were redeployed in Kenya and Djibouti, where the US has a strong presence in terms of military prowess.

But last month, New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reported that President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S., father of Hunter...
has made a special request to Pentagon to consider deploying troops to Somalia. The request is being handled by the Department of Defense, which is now in the process of sending Special Forces to Somalia.

As a precaution, the US has already dispatched several troops to northeastern Kenya where they will work closely with the Kenya Defense Forces. The troops will help close in the fight against al-Shabaab, DoD said in a statement.

Last month, the revamped Somali National Army reportedly killed over 300 al-Shabaab Death Eaters mainly in Lower Shabelle and parts of Middle Shabelle according to the military. The operation has since been halted but it's due to resume very soon.

Early yesterday [Tuesday], the Somali National Army captured Ba'adweyn town from the al-Shabaab Death Eaters over three months after the team lost it. al-Shabaab has been significantly degraded in recent months due to unending military operations in the country.

The Grand Turk
Will Turkey Transfer it's Mercenaries from Libya to Afghanistan?
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a deal was reached between the Ottoman Turkish intelligence and leaders of several Syrian militias to transfer mercenaries to Afghanistan, like those who were sent to Libya, and Nagorno-Karabakh.However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
the process of recruiting these mercenaries will be via Ottoman Turkish security companies with official contracts, starting in September. Their main task will be protecting Kabul airport, governmental institutions and headquarters, and the international forces.

SOHR added that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
wants to circumvent international law by registering these mercenaries as security company employees, in order to legalize their presence in Kabul.

The Observatory claimed that the mercenaries would not take part in any military operations against the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, and will work for a monthly salary of between $2,000-3,000 US dollars per month.

Notably, the number of Syrian mercenaries sent to Libya by Turkey is estimated at 18,000, including 350 minors under the age of 18. The majority of these child soldiers were recruited by the ’Sultan Murad’ militia, who exploited their personal hardships to enlist them.

About 10,750 mercenaries are thought to have returned to Syria after the end of their contracts. The number of jihadists believed to have arrived among them is 10,000 fighters, of whom 2,500 were Tunisian nationals.

#3  President Erdogan was using his Turkic paramilitaries as an occupation force for the Kurdish territory he’d taken over along the Syrian side of his border... perhaps he intends to do something similar around the Kabul airport he promised to guard. It sounds like they’ll be bringing their own comfort boys with them, too, if this rumour is correct.

Most Americans, including nearly a third of Democrats, don't think Biden's fulfilling duties of president
I have no doubt this is true, but what is Russia Today’s purpose in publishing this article?
[RT] A Trafalgar Group poll showed that 57% of Americans believe Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. I'm not working for you. Don't be such a horse's ass....
isn't fully executing the duties of president — and it’s not just a right-wing view. Nearly one in three Democrats think someone else is running the country.

With about 7% responding as ’not sure,’ only 36% of Americans believe their president is actually performing the full role of his office, according to the poll, which was conducted between June 23 and 25 in partnership with the Convention of States Action.

Just 59% of Democrats think that Biden is in charge — perhaps a surprising figure in light of the fact he reportedly got more than 81 million votes in last November’s presidential election, surpassing the previous record high of 69.5 million set by Barack Obama
My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it...
Just 11% of Republican respondents and 36% of independents said Biden was directing policy and running the country. The poll was weighted toward Democrats, with more than 39% of participants identifying with Biden’s party. Fewer than 36% were Republicans, and 25% were independents.

By age group, young people were by far the most skeptical of Biden’s grip on power. Just 21% of 18- to 24-year-olds believe he’s fully executing the duties of his office, the survey found. No other age segment polled below 36%.

In terms of race, Biden appeared to inspire the most confidence among black voters, with 69% saying he was performing fully as president. Asians, at 59%, were also relatively confident he was making the major decisions, but Hispanic and white participants came in at 35% and 30%, respectively.

US Representative Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), formerly White House doctor for then-President Donald Trump
...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party...
, joined with 13 other Republican members of Congress last month in calling for Biden to take a cognitive test to assess his mental fitness for office.

Iowa man, 32, arrested in Chicago after 'semi-automatic rifle and .45 handgun found lying in W Hotel window by housekeeper who alerted police'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Chicago police found Keegan Casteel, 32, at 5:45 p.m. on July 4 with the two weapons in a W Hotel room

  • The weapons were found in the window sill of Room 1208 on the 12th floor of the hotel overlooking Ohio Street Beach in the 600 block of North Lake Shore Drive

  • Casteel was arrested after cops received a tip from a housekeeping employee

  • Cops found a .308 caliber semi-automatic rifle that was not engraved with a serial number - and had a round in the chamber

  • Cops also found a high-power scope with laser-sight attachments, a number of bullet magazines and a .45 caliber handgun

Related: Heavy.com makes him sound like a reasonably responsible citizen — car repair shop owner and master technician, Iowa gun license, married with two children, a series of minor misbehaviours of the adolescent male type that ended when the kids came along — who didn’t bother or couldn’t get the matching Illinois and Chicago licenses for a trip to Chicago with the wife and kiddies, and made the mistake of leaving his weapons out where the hotel maid could see them. But he did break Chicago law by bringing in the weapons, and the prosecutor will be able to justify worrying that he intended to massacre the crowd below like that sociopath gambler in Las Vegas a few years ago.

#3  I know exactly where this hotel is and, depending on what side of the building the family was staying, would have a pretty good view of Navy Pier (although it is almost 700 yards away from the hotel). There are some pretty popular parks right across Lakeshore Drive (or whatever they're calling it now) that are a lot closer.

Round in the chamber does sound suspicious, if true. They don't say if the weapons were encased in any way. 'Rifle’s serial number was not visible' is another red flag.

Hauling in your weapons from your car overnight in Chicago (or anyplace) is a pretty good method of not having them stolen IMHO.

ITV: Irish Court Grants Family Permission to Sue Libya Over IRA Death
[LIBYAREVIEW] An Irish court has granted the family of a prominent loyalist who was murdered by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) permission to sue the Libyan government over the weapon used in his killing, according to ITV news.William Kingsberry was rubbed out by the IRA in his Belfast home in November 1991. His son Mike was aged just eight at the time, a witness to his father’s killing.

"The bottom line is we wouldn’t be stood here today if the Libyans hadn’t supplied the weapons that killed him," he said. "We deserve to know the full truth, how that weapon got into the hands of those people — that’s what every family deserves, regardless of who they were," he added.

Two weapons have been linked to the murders, including an AKM assault rifle. Permission to sue Libya was granted just days ago, with a letter from police confirming an AKM rifle was used key to that decision.

Lawyer Gary Duffy explained: "It was the basis of the court decision — without it, we wouldn’t have been able to get permission from the court to sue Libya. It links the death to the Libyan state."

In April of this year, some of those injured or bereaved by Libyan-sponsored IRA attacks compiled a dossier for compensation, after the Irish government refused to publish its own report.

[AlAhram] The british military base on Cyprus, Dhekelia Garrison, , directly abuts the north along a corridor of farmland, abandoned homes and fields that offers secluded routes for smugglers, or for migrants colonists to cross

Authorities at a British military base on Cyprus have hired 50% more customs officers and procured detection equipment to better thwart illegal immigration from the breakaway north of the ethnically split island.

The addition of 24 new officers and four SUVs _ two with thermal imaging cameras _ allows authorities to patrol around-the-clock along a 45-kilometer (28-mile) boundary, Customs and Immigration Chief Adam Chatfield said.

Still, it’s practice for making something that actually works in the future, and probably something statistically as effective as distilled water isn’t likely to do much harm if done imperfectly. When Mr. Wife started up his company’s factory near Cairo, they first had to clean the empty pipes of mummified gerbils, and the workers were persuaded to wear their company-issued safety shoes when they heard that walking barefoot through the raw materials would cause sterility. It wouldn’t, of course, but in these modern times one can’t have factory workers trotting around barefoot.

Ashrafi urges minorities not to be afraid of anyone as Constitution guarantees equal rights

[DAILYTIMES.PK] Special Representative to the Prime Minister on Religious Harmony, Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi
...who looks like he's never missed a meal and then some..
on Wednesday urged minorities not to be afraid of anyone as the Constitution of Islamic Theocratic Republic of Pakistain guarantees equal rights to all.
Which doesn't address the question of why they're murdered on a whim, forcibly converted, or accused of blasphemy when a pious Moslem wants something they have...
Addressing the National Conference for Women organized by Interfaith Harmony Council, he said people of all religions played their role in the creation of Pakistain and most of Moslems were duty bound to take care of minorities.

Islam did not allow forced conversions and teaches us to respect faiths and sacred personalities of all religions.

Not a single incident of blasphemy
...the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence to a deity, or sacred objects, or toward something considered sacred or inviolable. Some religions consider it to be a crime. In Pakistain you can commit blasphemy by looking cross-eyed at a Koran...
occurred in the country during the last eight months, he said adding, the government would never allow use of blasphemy law for personal gains.
Then his lips fell off.
Referring to terror attack on a Church, he said the seminaries students were first who rushed to the venue to donate bloods to their Christian brothers and likewise during a terror attack on a mosque, the Christians donated their bloods to Moslem brothers.
Sure they did.
He said Islam was the first religion to provide unprecedented rights to women. Islam stresses protecting the rights of wives, daughters and the Holy Koran provided inheritance rights to the daughters. Islam allows women to do business.

"We should promote interfaith harmony by arranging frequent get together of the believers of all religions," he said.

Quoting the verses of Holy Koran, he said, the killings of one human being was tantamount to killing of the whole mankind and the saving the life of a person was like saving the lives of whole mankind.

Lauding the goodwill gestures of Paleostinian Christians during Israeli attacks, he said the Christians opened the gates of churches for Moslems and allowed them to offer prayers and break their fasts there during Raman ul Mubarak.

Commenting on Afghan’s situation, he said, Pakistain wanted peace and tranquility in Afghanistan and would never allow use of its land against any country.

Russia was not involved in cyber attacks against US companies, says ambassador
[TASS] Russia was not involved in the cyber attacks on US and other Western companies, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said on Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

"As regarding to what you have just mentioned about the recent attack on the United States and other Western countries infrastructure, I would like to say that Russia didn't participate in such attack, Russia didn't stay behind the curtain of such attacks," he said.

Russia was not involved in the cyber attacks on US and other Western companies, Anatoly Antonov said.

"As regarding to what you have just mentioned about the recent attack on the United States and other Western countries infrastructure, I would like to say that Russia didn't participate in such attack, Russia didn't stay behind the curtain of such attacks," he said.

The issue of cyber threats has become more relevant in the US in recent months. In early May, hackers from the DarkSide group hacked the systems of US pipeline company Colonial Pipeline. According to the US intelligence, the hacker group may be based in Russia or Eastern Europe, however, it has no links to any government. On May 31, a hacker attack on the US meat processing company JBS was recorded. According to the White House, a criminal organization likely to be located in Russia may be behind the attack on JBS.

On June 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin
...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
dismissed the accusations against Moscow of its involvement in cyber attacks on US companies as ridiculous. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov assured that Moscow will consider any requests by the US regarding the JBS hacker attack if there are any. He stressed that Russia has no information regarding the organizers of cyber attacks on JBS.

Rocket attack targets US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone -Iraqi security

White House on Uniforms for Covid Door to Door Patrol
satire
[GenesiusTimes] President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that his administration would step up efforts to get Americans vaccinated against COVID-19 with a new program that would go "door to door, literally knocking on doors," urging people to get the shots.

He unveiled the new uniforms the vaccine informants would be wearing: black suits with red coronavirus armbands and a black whip.

During his remarks the president said that "We need to go community by community, neighborhood by neighborhood, and oft times, door to door, literally knocking on doors" to encourage the vaccination for a disease so bad that you have to be tested to know if you have it.

#13  Well let me get this straight then.

People, who I may or may not know have been vax'd and/or already infected, will be going door to door purposefully looking for those who who have not been vax's and/or have antibodies, who may have come across someone sick or is a non-symptom carrier, and then, according to the experts the wu flue can linger outdoors and infect the pets, passing that potential infection along their route.

Kind of like driving down the road, dragging a chain, in a Red Flag Warning, right?

According to Sturgis Theory, maximum contact with people who are not following protocols is literally murder, right? Isn't that what the Sammyknockers would be doing?

Time must be of the essence if such a drastic measure is necessary for the Federal Gov to, maybe even illegally, go for such a move, then how many proven vax'd need to be hired to beat the brush? Which neighborhoods get focused on, the vulnerable poor? The safe Middle Class? The Rich Enclaves? In a save who is most important as fast as possible, would it not be best to do that order in reverse, Rich Privilege, perhaps even White Privilege is it? According to CRT should they not start in the poorest minority neighborhoods first?

Exactly. Even if you believe that the Federal Government's noble and honorable intentions to get everyone vax'd is above reproach, this would still be the final result.

And guess which of the three neighborhoods will be getting the Sammyknockers? Probably even a point system for the dossier considering your response.

#5  Gotta figure they're looking at how to set up the next episode.

A skeptical man is always open to other possibilities, but I found the accident story believable. IIRC, it was a very windy day. A loaded container ship has a huge sail area. When a ship is in a channel, if it gets too close to the bank, the Bernoulli effect kicks in and forces the ship closer to the bank. The close end of the ship is more strongly affected and it turns sideways. Add in maneuvering complications from high winds, and there you are - stuck in the middle of the effin' Suez Canal.

That said, seeing how easy it was to generate a little global chaos has to give bad actors some ideas for a re-run.

Multiple gunmen killed and arrested in firefight with suspected assassins of Haitian President Jovenel, PM declares martial law
Follow up to yesterday’s report of the assassination.
[RT] Haiti's national police have arrested multiple men suspected of assassinating President Jovenel Moise, the government announced, adding that a shootout with the alleged perpetrators is still ongoing.

The suspected assassins were arrested "shortly before 6pm" local time on Wednesday, Haiti’s minister of communication Frantz Exantus announced on Twitter.

While Exantus did not identify any of the alleged perpetrators or say how many had been brought into custody, Haiti’s national police chief later told a presser that two "mercenaries" had been captured, while four others were killed in a firefight. He added that three coppers who were briefly taken hostage by the purported assassins had been freed, though still vowed to kill or detain the remaining button men.

Unconfirmed footage alleged to show the armed standoff has circulated on social media, in which barrages of gunfire are heard as a column of black smoke appears to rise from a building in the distance.

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph’s office said earlier that his administration was ensuring the "continuity of the state" following the "villainous liquidation," later adding that the PM had been in touch with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Unknown button men, allegedly announcing they were agents of the US Drug Enforcement Agency, raided Moise’s residence on Wednesday morning and gunned him down. Moise’s wife Martine was also injured in the attack, and was flown to a Florida hospital at death's door.

The assassins "spoke English and Spanish," the government said, declaring a state of siege and launching a manhunt after the perpetrators.

Haitian PM declares nationwide state of emergency following president's assassination
[RT] The second-highest level state of emergency has been declared throughout Haiti after its president was assassinated, Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph has announced.

"We decided to declare the State of Siege [in] the whole country," Joseph said in a televised address broadcast on national television following an emergency meeting of Haiti’s Council of Ministers. "We don’t want the country to plunge into chaos," he added.

A declaration of a state of siege is preceded only by a state of war. It involves a curfew, control over the media and civilian population, and closure of borders. Martial law is temporarily imposed and the army is deployed to aid police in maintaining law and order.

It is scheduled to stay in place for 15 days, an order published in the nation’s official gazette on Wednesday said.

In his speech, the prime minister asked the people to "keep calm" and aid the government through these "difficult times." He also repeatedly stated that the situation is "under control."

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in a nighttime attack on his residence on Wednesday. First Lady Martine Moise was also injured in the assault and reports claimed she died of wounds. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
later Haiti's ambassador to the United States announced she was "stable, but at death's door," Rooters reports.

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph condemned what he called the "barbaric act" perpetrated by a group of unidentified individuals, who spoke "English and Spanish."

A local media outlet identified an assailant as a Colombian earlier on Wednesday, but this information has not been officially confirmed yet. Joseph vowed to bring the assassins to justice, saying that they would "pay for what they did in court."

The liquidation has already drawn condemnation from some foreign nations, including the US and the UK. Haiti’s neighbor, the Dominican Republic, reportedly ordered the closure of its borders over the incident and increased surveillance.
An Nahar provides background:
Moise had been ruling Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, by decree, after legislative elections due in 2018 were delayed in the wake of disputes, including on when his own term ends.

In addition to the political crisis, kidnappings for ransom have surged in recent months, further reflecting the growing influence of armed gangs in the Caribbean nation.

Haiti also faces chronic poverty and recurrent natural disasters.

The president faced steep opposition from swathes of the population that deemed his mandate illegitimate, and he churned through a series of seven prime ministers in four year. Most recently, Joseph was supposed to be replaced this week after only three months in the post.

In addition to presidential, legislative and local elections, Haiti was due to have a constitutional referendum in September after it was twice postponed due to the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic.

Supported by Moise, the text of the constitutional reform, aimed at strengthening the executive branch, has been overwhelmingly rejected by the opposition and many civil society organizations.

The constitution currently in force was written in 1987 after the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship and declares that "any popular consultation aimed at modifying the Constitution by referendum is formally prohibited."

Critics had also claimed it was impossible to organizing a poll, given the general insecurity in the country.

Nearly 2,100 migrants died trying to reach Spain in 2021: NGO
[AlAhram] Spanish interior ministry figures show that between January 1 and June 30, a total of 12,622 migrants colonists arrived in Spain by sea, compared with 7,256 a year earlier

Nearly 2,100 migrants colonists died trying to reach Spain by sea during the first six months of 2021, roughly the same amount as during all of last year, a migrant rights group said Wednesday.

That is five times more deaths than were registered during the same period of last year and the highest number for a first half of the year since non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras, which monitors migratory flows, started keeping records in 2007.

"It's been a horrendous year," Helena Maleno, an activist with the Spanish NGO, told a news conference called to present the group´s latest report.

A total of 2,087 migrants colonists from 18 nations, mainly in West Africa, perished in attempts to get to Spain between January and June, compared to 2,170 during all of 2020.

Over 90 percent of the deaths this year, or 1,922, took place during 57 shipwrecks on the route to the Canary Islands.

Such tragedies are recurring with migrant arrivals on the Atlantic archipelago surging since late 2019 after increased patrols along Europe's southern coast dramatically reduced crossings to the continent via the Mediterranean.

The shortest route to the islands is more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the Moroccan coast, but it is notoriously dangerous because of the strong currents in the Atlantic.

Maleno blamed the rise in deaths this year on a greater use of inflatable boats on this route, which are less safe, because migrants colonists were struggling to get their hands on wooden vessels, and on inadequate cooperation between the rescue services of Spain and Morocco.

The cooperation between the two nations has worsened since a crisis in May that resulted in the entry of over 10,000 people from Morocco into Ceuta, a tiny Spanish enclave, she added.

"There is no coordination. Information is not flowing between the two states," Maleno said.

In many cases, even after the NGO sounds the alarm about a struggling boat, no one comes to the rescue, she added.

"Moslem colonists Migrants may spend an entire day drowning," she said.

The higher corpse count is also due to the fact that more family members of migrants colonists are reporting to the NGO when their loved ones go missing at sea, Maleno added.

Spanish interior ministry figures show that between January 1 and June 30, a total of 12,622 migrants colonists arrived in Spain by sea, compared with 7,256 a year earlier. Asked by AFP, a front man said the ministry had no tally for how many migrants colonists went missing or died in the attempted crossing.
