[News Motion] In the summer of 2020, shortly after the murder of George Floyd, Kelly Latimore, a white artist who grew up surrounded by images of a white Jesus, decided to make a course correction. He’d paint the Virgin Mary and Jesus with gold halos encircling their heads — and both would be Black.
Also, his image of Jesus would resemble Floyd, a Black man who had been killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
The painting, titled "Mama," attracted little notice in February after a copy was installed at the law school of the Catholic University of America in Washington. But in November, The Daily Signal, a conservative website, published an article about the work and about the university’s recently published report on diversity and inclusion, and students created a petition calling for its removal. That month, the painting was stolen.
The university replaced it in November with a smaller copy — the school’s policy was "not to cancel speakers or prevent speech by members of the community," the university’s president, John H. Garvey, said in a statement after the theft — but now that copy, too, has been stolen. And the student government has passed a resolution calling for further displays of the work on campus to be banned, citing religious objections.
The debate over whether a private institution has the right to display or remove work that some students find offensive is one that has rippled across the country in recent years. In 2019, students at Mary Baldwin University, a private liberal arts college in Staunton, Virginia, objected to an art exhibition in a university gallery that included Confederate imagery. The show was closed within 48 hours of its premiere. And earlier this year, a federal judge ruled that Vermont Law School could cover two murals that some students considered racist.
While Garvey had initially defended the decision to display the work, he apologized in a statement Monday for the "confusion" the painting had created and pledged to think carefully about how to replace it. (An investigation into both thefts is ongoing, the university said.)
"Many saw the figure in the arms of Our Lady as a divinized George Floyd," the statement said. "This interpretation led to accusations that the work was blasphemous, something that is contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. Regardless of your interpretation, it created needless controversy and confusion, for which I am sorry."

It’s not a Black Jesus that ought to be objectionable — people around the world have painted Christian religious figures, including Jesus, looking loke themselves (see here) — but sanctifying Mr. Floyd shows either deliberate insult or a depth of ignorance about the man that has to be deliberate. Giving his face to one of the thieves hung on crosses alongside the crucified Jesus would work, or perhaps a forgiveness/grace motif, but this is a BLM, Inc. approach by both the artist and the university. Especially as one would assume a Catholic university would have art historians on staff to explain the theological error.

'Puerto Vallarta from our veranda,' she wrote on Facebook. 'Mexican authorities won't let anyone off our cruise ship, Koningsdam. Some crew members (fully vaccinated) tested positive for Covid. Ship is headed back out to sea.

The figures come just over three years since a Gay Paree police officer admitted in 2018 that the majority of sex attackers on the Gay Paree metro system were migrants colonists from North African backgrounds.
Figures from the rest of La Belle France outside of the Gay Paree region showed French-born suspects the vast majority in all crimes on public transit except for thefts without violence, where North Africans accounted for 43 per cent, or nearly half.

[FoxNews] San Francisco leaders on Friday approved an emergency plan to combat drug use in the city's much-troubled Tenderloin neighborhood after Mayor London Breed made a proposal earlier this month that some fear will criminalize addicts and the homeless.
The 8-2 vote by the Board of Supervisors came after a lengthy meeting that ended just after midnight Friday. Board President Shamann Walton and Supervisor Dean Preston dissented, arguing that potential over-policing could impact African Americans, among other issues.
The declaration authorizes the city's Department of Emergency Management to bypass certain red tape in an effort to set up a temporary center where people can access drug treatment and counseling.
Tenderloin includes City Hall but has been plagued with crime and open-air drug dealing and use and homelessness. The order does not call for an increased police presence, but Chief Bill Scott said officers just can't ignore what's happening in the neighborhood, where parents have said their children can't go outside and addicts inject themselves with drugs out in the open.
"We’re out there to help," Scott said. "We’re not out there to turn a blind eye to people killing themselves on the street."
In a social media threat this week, Breed said: "When someone is openly using drugs on the street we're going to give them the option of going to the services and treatment we're providing. But if they refuse, we're not going to allow them to continue using on the street. The families in the neighborhood deserve better."
Deaths attributable to overdoses have increased more than 200% in San Francisco since 2018. Last year, more than 700 people died from drug overdoses in the city, more than the number who died from COVID-19, according to the emergency proclamation.
Nearly 600 people have died from drug overdoses this year, Breed said earlier this month.
Nearly half of the deaths occurred in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods, according to the proclamation. The areas make up 7% of the city's population.
When she announced the declaration, a visibly frustrated Breed said the city needed to be "less tolerant of all the bull—- that has destroyed our city."
District Attorney Chesa Boudin and public defender Mano Raju both denounced the plan at a news conference this week.
"If arrests and prosecutions alone could solve the drug crisis in this country or in this city, it would have been solved long ago," said Boudin, who is facing a recall campaign. "We’ve invested over a trillion dollars in fighting the so-called war on drugs, and where has it gotten us?"

The Ethiopian army advanced to the borders of Tigray and even started fighting again on its territory for the city of Alamata. The cities of Tigray are subjected to strong strikes by planes and drones, several dozen civilians are killed a day, and therefore the leadership of the NPLT accuses Ethiopia and the "Nobel laureate" of carrying out genocide.

[AlAhram] Æthiopia's government said on Friday that its troops would not advance further into the war-torn region of Tigray but warned that the decision could be overturned if "territorial illusory sovereignty" was threatened.
The announcement comes days after the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebel group declared a retreat to their Tigray stronghold, and signals a pause in fighting following a series of battlefield victories claimed by the government.

But since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed -- the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner -- headed to the front last month, according to state media, the government has claimed to have retaken a string of key towns.
The government has dismissed Monday's withdrawal announcement by the TPLF as a cover-up for military setbacks.

The fighting in Africa's second most populous nation has displaced more than two million people and more than nine million are in need of food aid, according to UN estimates.

Clark mentioned two of the books in question: "Lawn Boy," by Jonathan Evison, which includes long sections of a boy reminiscing about explicit experiences he had at 10 years old; and "Gender Queer: A Memoir," by Maia Kobabe, which includes photos of sexual acts between a boy and a man. Concerned parents have spoken up about these books and others in Leader and Round Rock, as well as in other school districts, such as Fairfax County, Virginia.

A 21-year-old homeless man was arrested in Los Angeles County this week on charges of kidnapping and having sex with a minor, according to police.
Simon Lopez was arrested Monday afternoon in a residential neighborhood of Canoga Park, Glendale police said in a press release.
Lopez’s arrest stemmed from a reported confrontation between a minor and an adult male earlier this month in Glendale, police said. Investigators learned that the male was seen physically assaulting the minor before fleeing the area in a vehicle.
Investigators also learned that Lopez had been having a romantic relationship with a minor under the age of 15 and had a non-local warrant out for his arrest, according to police.
Police tracked down Lopez in the 21000 block of Roscoe Blvd. in Canoga Park on Monday around 2:30 p.m. and arrested him.
He was charged with kidnapping, domestic violence, engaging in intercourse with a minor, and for his outstanding warrant. Jail records show he is in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
Glendale police said District Attorney George Gascón’s office recommended that Lopez’s bail be set at $0 because of the county’s emergency "Zero-Dollar" bail order. When reached for comment, a spokesman for Gascón’s office appeared to contest the Glendale police, telling Fox News its prosecutor did not recommend $0 bail and that a judge ultimately set bail at $100,000.
The "Zero-Dollar" policy was implemented to reduce crowding in county jails during the COVID-19 pandemic and applies to misdemeanors and lower-level felonies.
Justice reform advocates have long argued that low-income and minority communities are disproportionately affected by cash bail. Earlier this year, the California Supreme Court eliminated cash bail for defendants who can’t afford to pay it – essentially requiring that poor defendants be freed unless they are deemed too dangerous to be released awaiting trial.
The court’s decision came despite California voters’ November 2020 rejection of a proposed end to the state’s cash bail system.

[NYPOST] A Baltimore police officer has died after being removed from life support one week after she was shot while sitting in her patrol car.
The Baltimore Police Department said Thursday that Officer Keona Holley’s health had been deteriorating in recent days and the family made the difficult decision to end life support. She died shortly thereafter.
Two men — Elliot Knox, 31, and Travon Shaw, 32 — have been arrested and charged in her shooting, and a second shooting soon afterward that left a man dead.
Holley, 39. was on duty in her patrol car when she was shot about 1:30 a.m. Dec. 16 in southern Baltimore.
After Holley’s shooting, police allege the two men went to a southwest Baltimore neighborhood about 10 miles away and shot and killed 38-year-old Justin Johnson.
It’s not clear what prompted the shootings.

"Executive branch officials were trying to stop the inspection altogether, but the judge did not grant their emergency motion to stop the inspection," Amistad Project attorney Tom King stated. "They did not go to court seeking a delay; they sought to stop it, and they lost."

[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] A convicted pedophile trans woman with a history of possessing indecent photos of children was sentenced to 20 months in prison after photos were discovered of her engaging in sexual acts with a dog.
Claire Goodier, previously known as John, had her devices seized after a routine check by police, according to 4W.
The police discovered searches for bestiality during this check, which was initiated in 2019. Police found enough evidence for them to remove the devices from Goodier's possession and do a full analysis.
After two years, police discovered 31 images of Goodier raping a dog, which occurred in December of 2018.
Goodier reportedly admitted to the act, stating that she sought the experience after fantasizing about having sex with an animal.
It was there that Goodier took part in sexual acts with others and the animal.
During the December 2018 incident, Goodier had also been in breach of a suspended sentence order, which had been imposed in May of 2018 for failing to follow the terms of a sexual harm prevention order.
In 2006 and 2009, Goodier was convicted of possessing indecent images of children.
Judge Steven Everett called the Goodier’s act with the dog in addition to other adults "despicable," "disgusting," and "depraved."
"Simon Mills, defending, said his client had always been 'frank and honest' with the probation service and although accepting the behaviour had been depraved and disgusting, called on the Judge to consider another suspended sentence," wrote the Daily Mail.
"This incident took place some three years ago. 'The picture now is one of sporadic offending," said Mills. "This is not a case where the offending is getting more and more serious. She will do everything asked of her by the court and there are tentative signs of improvement in her attitude and approach."
Judge Everett told Goodier he did agree with the probation service assessing her as being a low risk of re-offending as he sent her to prison.
"You are a long, long way from changing your life. You deceitfully took part in a cocaine-fueled incident with other persons," said Everett. "Since the terrible offense took place you kept the images unashamedly for your own sexual gratification."
