[Mises] With Sri Lanka’s short-lived green revolution of 2021 having quickly devolved into a real revolution just one year later, complete with the ouster of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s incompetent and authoritarian government this past week, now is a good time to hammer home not only why the effort failed, but why so-called ESG (environmental, social, and governance) policies and the green energy movement more generally are hopeless and destructive wastes of time.
First, facing financial difficulties largely the result of taking on heaps of Chinese loans for projects of questionable or outright nonexistent value, Rajapaksa’s government abruptly informed its overwhelmingly agricultural society that its farmers would no longer be allowed to use the petrochemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides that made feeding the population of tens of millions possible. Forced to go organic, Rajapaksa, suddenly the darling of Western environmentalists everywhere, watched as his countrymen fell quickly into starvation and poverty. Twenty percent drop-offs in the production of rice and tea, the country’s staples, led to inflation of over 50 percent and to nine out of every ten Sri Lankan families skipping meals each day.
While no economy or society could have been expected to handle such a food-supply-disrupting decree without immense suffering, let alone a poor and civil-war-wracked state like Sri Lanka, the truth is that modern life as we know it is simply not possible without fossil fuels and their byproducts.
With congressional Republicans and Democratic senators like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema virtually all that stands in the way of the United States pursuing similarly misguided policies, the facts about the hopeless inadequacies of green energy and ESG-related policies need to be made clear.

ISW: The Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out counterattacks between Izyum and Slovyansk and retook positions in a number of settlements
Russian troops tried to advance to the northwest of Izyum .
This was reported in the American Institute of Warfare (ISW).
Ukrainian forces conducted a series of localized counterattacks between Izyum and Slovyansk and retook positions in a number of populated areas.
The invaders continued ground attacks to the northeast and south of Bakhmut .
The Russian Federation continued its attempts to attack Pisky and carried out a limited ground strike southwest of Donetsk .
ISW notes that the Russian high command is faced with a dilemma, the severity of which may depend on Ukraine's ability to conduct significant counteroffensive operations in several directions at the same time.
If Ukraine can strengthen its position around Izyum, continuing the transition to a counteroffensive on Kherson, then Russian troops will face a very difficult choice.
They will probably have to decide:
or leave their positions in the west around Izyum in favor of defending their land lines of communication further north and east,
or bring in more personnel and equipment to try to hold the current front line.
"However, such forces would have to come from another axis, which would endanger Russia's other achievements," the analysts emphasized.
It will be recalled that the Institute for the Study of War also stated that the preparation for the counteroffensive on Kherson for the first time allows Ukraine to start actively shaping the course of the war . The Armed Forces are likely to seize the strategic initiative and force Russia to reallocate forces and change priorities.
[LB] The enemy is trying to create conditions for an attack on the cities of Donetsk region.
by Tanya Matyash
The Russian occupiers are trying to create favorable conditions for an attack on the cities of Donetsk region , have conducted offensive and assault actions to improve the tactical position. However, the attempts of the Russians turned out to be unsuccessful, the defenders of Ukraine repelled four enemy attacks.
This was announced by the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Gaidai.
"Four enemy attacks ended with their retreat to previous positions," he noted.
Gaidai noted that the Russians are using all available weapons to dislodge units of the Defense Forces from occupied positions. They are shelling settlements and fortifications of our military, trying to get closer to Bakhmut.
"Enemy aircraft operate several times a day in these areas. Yesterday they carried out four airstrikes. Three more times the Russians conducted artillery attacks, used rocket artillery, twice the assault operations were supported by tank offensives. Six more times mortar attacks were carried out," Gaidai emphasized.
It will be recalled that earlier the General Staff announced that the Russians will not stop their attempts to advance on the Bakhmut and Avdiiv directions .
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] A big shot of the Islah party (the Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. "The party’s remnant leaders deserve to be dismissed from the Saudi-led coalition-backed government, through decisions issued by the ’Riyadh-formed Presidential Council’ because the party’s leadership in Riyadh refused to listen to the advices about making alliance with Sana’a forces and leaving the Saudi capital," said Anis Mansour al-Subaihi, who is also the Head of the Hana Aden Center for Studies.

At a distance of up to 300 meters, flamethrowers from different firing points with the fire of thermobaric ammunition from hand-held flamethrowers destroyed the strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, entered into battle with the enemy and the tactical deuces withdrew to positions to further cover the advance of Russian units on armored vehicles.

This is what the Ukrainians and Russians did behind real 'Nazi' lines 1941-45. When the Russians need more troops on the front line, anti-partisan warfare will further bleed manpower resources as it did the Germans. We can watch as the Russians institute policies similar to what the Germans did in their anti-partisan operations, which bring even greater irony to the use of the phrase denazification.

With all the propaganda and unsavory truths that are floating around, some folks who aren't directly involved are legitimately confused about who the bad guys are. My take is to see what tack Russia's neighbors take and consider their position to be the most reasonable. See Poland, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, Latvia, etc. etc.
[NYPOST] The Brooklyn McDonald’s worker who was shot in the neck in a spat over cold fries has died, cops announced Friday.
Matthew Webb, 23, "departed this vale of tears" after he was shot Monday outside the Bedford-Stuyvesant fast-food restaurant where he worked, the NYPD said.
The attack "has been deemed a homicide," the force said early Friday, stressing that "the investigation remains ongoing."
Michael Morgan, 20, has already been charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm for blasting Webb in anger at his mom getting served cold fries.
He is expected to face upgraded homicide charges, prosecutors told a court hearing Thursday, even before Webb’s death was confirmed.
Webb was toiling at the Fulton Street eatery on Monday evening when Morgan’s mom, Lisa Fulmore, complained to workers that her fries were cold and asked to speak to a manager.
When the workers began laughing at her, Fulmore was FaceTiming with Morgan, who came to the restaurant and got into a fight with Webb that spilled out onto the sidewalk.
Morgan punched Webb in the face and when he got back up, he pulled out a gun and blasted him in the neck, prosecutors alleged.

[Vesti] Ukrainian defenders "continue to successfully carry out rocket and artillery fire missions in certain areas," while "the enemy is experiencing an acute shortage of trained and somehow motivated reinforcements for units that will suffer losses as a result of the war in Ukraine." This is stated in the operational summary of the General Staff as of 18.00 Friday, August 5.
On the Volyn and Polesye directions without changes.
In the Seversk direction , the enemy is holding separate subunits of the troops of the Western Military District in the border areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions. Carries out engineering equipment of positions and installation of video surveillance systems. From artillery, the enemy fired at civilian infrastructure in the areas of the settlements of Zhelezny Most and Gremyach in Chernihiv and Starikov in Sumy regions.

Ukrainian soldiers successfully repelled another enemy assault in the direction of Maryinka and forced the enemy to flee. The occupiers conducted reconnaissance with unmanned aerial vehicles in the areas of Zaporozhye and Novoselivka II.
In the Yuzhnobuzhsk direction , the enemy is trying to hold their positions with the available means of fire destruction and prevent our subunits from creating favorable conditions for a counteroffensive. August 5 is the 163rd day of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Briefly about the main thing that happened in the country on that day, about the situation in the regions, the exchange of prisoners, as well as all the relevant information from key departments - online Vesti.ua .
[Vesti] In Rovenki, mobilization agendas are distributed by teachers
To mobilize men in the uncontrolled territories of the Lugansk region, the Russian military is actively using various methods.
Serhiy Gaidai, head of the Luhansk OVA, wrote about this in his Telegram channel.
“Everyone is involved in the mobilization. So, in Rovenki, teachers are forced to carry summons, recalling them from vacation,” Gaidai wrote.
According to the head of the OVA,"... there was even a recorded case of an attack on a teacher after she tried to present a" letter of happiness ".
In addition, about 300 people were mobilized in Bryanka in a week: they were searched for on the streets, bus stops, and in public transport.
"The situation is similar in Kadievka," writes Gaidai.
He clarified that in Luhansk they are talking with the heads of personnel departments of enterprises, they are demanding lists of male workers.
"They ordered to call for 10 people to begin with," the message says.
According to him, the military of the Russian Federation in the Luhansk region hand out stories in crowded places, in particular, in markets and shops, as well as during public works to clear rubble.
It should be noted that earlier the National Security and Defense Council denied fakes about those subject to mobilization during the war .
We saw today people’s heads on a spike in Russian-occupied Popasna.
This is only a fraction of the Russian war crimes committed. I’m terrified when I think of what we’ll see when we retake the Russian-occupied cities and villages.

The Good:
[BLS] Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 528,000 in July, and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Jobgrowth was widespread, led by gains in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care.
The bad:
The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons increased by 303,000 to 3.9 million in July. This rise reflected an increase in the number of persons whose hours were cut due to slack work or business conditions.
The Ugly (because Y over Y inflation was 9.1%, the info below means employees lost):
In July, average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 15 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $32.27. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings have increased by 5.2 percent. In July, average hourly earnings of private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees rose by 11 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $27.57.

[IsraelTimes] The Khayyam satellite was designed and manufactured with the assistance of Russian corporation Roscosmos; launch scheduled for Tuesday, weeks after Putin’s trip to Iran
Russia will launch an Iranian remote sensing satellite into orbit next Tuesday, the two countries confirmed, two weeks after President Vladimir Putin ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances... visited Tehran.
"In cooperation with Russia, the Khayyam satellite will be launched next week from the Baikonur space station in Kazakhstan by a Soyuz satellite carrier," the Iranian space agency said late Wednesday.
The satellite, apparently named after 11th-12th century Persian polymath Omar Khayyam, aims to "monitor the country’s borders," enhance agricultural productivity and monitor water resources and natural disasters, the agency added. "It's a dessert topping, a floor wax, and a satellite! It's Shimmer Kayyam!"
Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos confirmed the launch is scheduled for Tuesday.
"On August 9, 2022, a Soyuz 2.1B rocket is scheduled to be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome... to put the Khayyam remote sensing device ordered by the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites.... into orbit," it said in a statement.
"The Khayyam device was designed and manufactured at enterprises that are part of the state corporation Roscosmos," it added.
News of the launch follows Putin’s visit to Iran on July 19, when he met President Ebrahim Raisi and Iran’s Lord High Potentate and Supreme Leader of All He Surveys Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ...the very aged actual dictator of Iran, successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini... Khamenei called for strengthening "long-term cooperation" with Russia in his talks with Putin.
Iran’s state news agency IRNA said the satellite has high imaging accuracy and is capable of filming the earth’s surface in different image spectra.
Russia is putting the satellite into space but it will be guided and controlled from ground stations in Iran, IRNA added.
Khayyam will not be the first Iranian satellite to be put into space by Russia.
In October 2005, Iran’s Sina-1 satellite, which aimed to study and observe the Earth, was deployed from Russia’s Plesetsk cosmodrome.
In June 2021, Putin denied a US media report that Russia is set to deliver an advanced satellite system to Iran that will vastly improve its spying capabilities.
Iran insists its space program is for civilian and defense purposes only, and does not breach the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, or any other international agreement.
Western governments worry that satellite launch systems incorporate technologies interchangeable with those used in ballistic missiles capable of delivering a nuclear warhead, something Iran has always denied wanting to build.
Iran successfully put its first military satellite into orbit in April 2020, drawing a sharp rebuke from the United States.
In March, the Revolutionary Guards, the ideological arm of Iran’s armed forces, announced it had successfully put a military "reconnaissance satellite," Nour-2, into orbit.

1st, my apologies for going off the specific article topic.
QUESTION:
Reload of data from UTAH to a what functioning Interstate network?
Because in 2.5 nanoseconds, a 500KT EMP burst at 110 miles also destroys about 75% of the Non-EMP shielded electronics for about 750 miles in all directions. Which includes the Pathway Electronics, and the systems attached. Plus Just about every vehicle made after 1995, just about all Cell Phones & Cell tower systems, roughly 80+% of Civilian CPU's. [Free Beacon] The man likely to become al Qaeda's next leader has spent decades using Iran as a base of operations and maintains deep ties to the hardline regime, signaling that two of the globe's leading terrorist forces could exponentially expand relations in the near future.
Saif al-Adel ...holed up in Iran from 2002 until 2010, when he made bail and moved back to the Pak-Afghan border...
...before he was an Al Qaeda big turban, he’d reached the exalted level of special forces lieutenant-colonel in the Egyptian army, then joined the Egyptian jihadist movement in the 1980s. He already rejoices in £7.5 million head money, which will no doubt go up with this promotion...
al Qaeda's number two leader and longtime head of its security arm, fled to Iran in the early 2000s, along with other senior leaders, following the September 11 attacks. From there, he helped relay orders from the just-killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and orchestrate terrorist operations that killed dozens of people, including Americans, according to former U.S. officials and information on the Iran-al Qaeda axis published by a watchdog group.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) protected al-Adel during his time in the country, and the regime permitted him to plan deadly terror attacks, including a May 2003 operation in Saudi Arabia that killed eight Americans. "Adel's suspected presence in Iran has raised further questions regarding Iranian influence on al Qaeda if Adel were to be named leader," according to United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), an advocacy group that closely tracks Iran's regional terror operations.
These ties have only deepened since President Joe Biden's bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan that left the Taliban in power and the country in shambles. Senior leaders in Iran's Quds Force, an elite IRGC branch, remain in close contact with al Qaeda leaders, "and since the fall of Afghanistan, have provided some al Qaeda leaders with travel documents and safe haven," according to a European intelligence analysis. The Iran-al Qaeda alliance, former U.S. officials told the Free Beacon, has quietly grown for many years, making the prospect of a new nuclear deal with Iran—which will provide Tehran with billions in cash—beneficial for its allies in al Qaeda.
"When the U.S. government enriches Iranian terrorists through sanctions relief or a lack of enforcement, that money ultimately goes back to support al Qaeda," Gabriel Noronha, a senior Iran adviser for the State Department during the Trump administration, told the Free Beacon. "We know that Saif al-Adel has not just been living in Iran for most of the past 20 years—he's been hosted there by the regime along with other al Qaeda operatives. Since 2015, the Iranian regime has allowed al Qaeda to establish an operational headquarters in the country, providing them with documents, passports, funding, and logistical support like safe houses."
Al-Adel and his network of al Qaeda confidants used their time in Iran to build close "operational coordination" with Tehran's security forces, including the IRGC. While Iran was once at odds with al Qaeda due to religious differences, that has not been the case for many years now, according to Noronha and other former U.S. officials familiar with these ties.
"These are not totally separate and distinct terrorist groups or even rivals anymore—they are part of an anti-American and anti-Western alliance," Noronha said.
From his perch in Iran during the mid-2000s, al-Adel "was allowed by Iran to travel to Pakistan and open more contacts with other al Qaeda leaders," according to UANI's research, which is based on intelligence and open-source reporting. Iran's decision to permit al-Adel and other al Qaeda operatives to freely move in the region "opens up speculation that al-Adel could establish a ’satellite office' for the group in Iran," according to a 2011 AP report.
Nathan Sales, former U.S. ambassador-at-large and coordinator for counterterrorism, told the Free Beacon that "contrary to expectations and contrary to conventional wisdom, the Iranian regime and al Qaeda have maintained a mutually beneficial relationship for many years."

Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed on his balcony by an R9X. An R9X has no explosives. It is as tall as a man and has slicing blades that slices the target into smaller pieces and chunks.
[Breitbart] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the South China Morning Post on Thursday that he would like to discuss his country’s war against Russia with the leader of Russia’s closest ally, Xi Jinping, "directly," and invited China to help rebuild Ukraine once the war is over.
Zelensky’s discussion with the Morning Post, a Hong Kong newspaper, was the first with an Asian news outlet since Russia escalated its eight-year-old war against Ukraine into a full-scale invasion in February. Zelensky used the opportunity to request a personal discussion with Xi, a genocidal communist dictator who is largely bankrolling the invasion of Ukraine through large purchases of cheap Russian oil and gas.
Ukraine is a member of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global program to trap poor countries in predatory loans to China that they cannot afford. The loans are nominally meant to pay China for massive infrastructure projects. China was also Ukraine’s top trading partner prior to the war. Last year, Zelensky said he hoped that Ukraine would become a "bridge to Europe" for Chinese influence in his last conversation with Xi.
While welcoming Chinese financing and failing to criticize China for maintaining a strong alliance with Russia throughout this year’s invasion, Zelensky has been slightly more critical of the Chinese Communist Party than his predecessors, unilaterally sanctioning the world’s second-largest economy last year after a Chinese company tried to buy a key Ukrainian defense corporation.

Volodymyr was implanted as a tool of the west to destabilize and weaken Russia. He is currently failing big time. Send me money, send me weapons and they do but he complains it is not enough and too slow. Soon we will see his exit after having his country destroyed. The loss of life of his troops is huge but covered up. His country will be divided up. Poland will acquire lands lost after WW11. Russia will reclaim Russian speaking areas so who else might be tempted. The spoils of war.

Will D.C. and Hollywood now stop kissing Volodmyr Zelensky's ass?
On the contrary, Vogue was just the beginning. It will be capped so not to make US/Euro 'leaders' look weaker than he. Long, tedious, boring, cribbed from other efforts, and a nod to all involved, like "No Time to Die".
[GEO.TV] The Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Babar Iftikhar Friday commented on rumours concerning the use of Pakistan’s air space in the drone strike that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri and said that there was "no question on the use of the Pakistani soil in Zawahiri's killing.
“The Foreign Ministry has issued a clear statement regarding Ayman Al-Zawahiri. It is impossible that Pakistan’s soil has been used for this,” he said, adding that irrelevant comments are made without any evidence.

"Pandemic-driven and racially-motivated acts of violence are deplorable crimes, and the Justice Department stands ready to use our hate crimes laws to hold perpetrators accountable," Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, said in a Thursday statement. "Hate crimes targeting Asian Americans have spiked during the pandemic and must be confronted. All people deserve to feel safe and secure living in their communities, regardless of race, color or national origin."
Gomez did not know the family but assumed they were Chinese and proceeded to follow them around because he believed they were a "threat" from the country that "started spreading that disease around," according to the Justice Department, citing statements made during his guilty plea.

[KavkazUzel] A terrorism financing case has been initiated against a resident of Izberbash, who is serving a sentence for illegal arms trafficking. According to investigators, he transferred at least 10,000 rubles to a member of a terrorist organization.
According to the investigation, from 2020 to April 2022, a 29-year-old resident of Izberbash, knowing that the Hayat Tahrir Ash-Sham
...formerly known as Al Nusra, Al Qaeda’s franchise in Syria...
organization was recognized as a terrorist organization and its activities were banned on the territory of Russia by a court decision, transferred at least 10,000 thousand rubles to its participant, reported the Department of the Sledkom for Dagestan.
The suspect was sentenced in June to seven years in prison for trafficking in weapons and explosives, and a criminal case has been opened against him for participation in the activities of a terrorist organization, according to a statement on the agency's website.
Part 1.1 of Article 205.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (assistance to terrorism) provides for up to 15 years in prison.
The "Caucasian Knot" also wrote that on April 1, the FSB announced the arrest of 10 accomplices of the Hayat Tahrir ash-Sham terrorist organization in nine Russian regions, including Dagestan, Ingushetia, Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan and Volgograd regions.
[ZMan] The most recent flareup between the Global American Empire and China has brought forth all of the usual commentary about the rise of China, its plans for Taiwan and the relative decline of America. The underlying assumption is that China could take Taiwan if it wanted and there is not much the United States can do about it, short of a nuclear strike on mainland China. Further, it is assumed that China will one day make its move on Taiwan when it feels the time is right.
This is an odd set of assumptions. If China can take Taiwan and wants to take Taiwan, then why are they not taking Taiwan? The standard answer is that they think they can wait out the American empire. That could be true but there is good evidence to suggest the clock is ticking in her ability to make war. China is hitting the wall demographically and she knows it. They have a lot of young military age males right now, but a decade from now they will be nearing middle-age.
Demography is destiny, as they say.
The more likely reason for China’s hesitance is that taking Taiwan would be an enormous gamble. It is a big island with no beaches. It has great ports, but those are heavily defended. The Taiwanese military is exceptionally good. They have the best weapons America can produce and they may have the best air defense system on the planet, thanks to America using Taiwan as a listening post. At the top of the island is advanced radar used to listen to the Chinese.

An Iraqi delegation, arrived in northeast Syria at the beginning of this week, is registering the names of people and families wishing to leave Hawl Camp and go back to their country.
“The delegation, which belongs to the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement, has been in the camp for about a week and is registering the names of families and individuals wishing to leave the camp to the Iraqi territory,” an informed source told North Press.
About 450 to 500 individuals are scheduled to be repatriated, the source added.
The identity of the registrants is also checked and verified, and a security search is conducted about them by the Iraqi authorities before their departure, the source further explained.
During the years 2019/2020, the Iraqi government resumed trips to get back Iraqis from Hawl Camp, but it then suspended those trips due to pressure from Iraqi tribal notables who accused these returnees of being ISIS members, according to refugees.
Iraqi refugees in Hawl camp, east of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, are calling on their country’s government to speed the process of repatriating them to Iraq in light of the continuing killings in the camp and the poor security conditions there.
Following the ISIS attack on Mosul and the Sinjar District in Iraq in 2014 and 2015, many residents fled to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) areas.
⚡️ Bulgaria, Latvia cease issuing visas to Russians.
The Bulgarian consular service in Moscow has reportedly temporarily suspended the acceptance of visa documents for Russian tourists and real estate owners due to “extraordinary circumstances.”

Which says nothing about Pakistani air — isn’t that how the SEALS got to Osama bin Laden’s compound?
[GEO.TV] The Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Babar Iftikhar Friday commented on rumours concerning the use of Pakistain’s air space in the dronezap that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri ...Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodox al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra... and said that there was "no question on the use of the Pak soil in Zawahiri's killing.
"The Foreign Ministry has issued a clear statement regarding Ayman al-Zawahiri. It is impossible that Pakistain’s soil has been used for this," he said, adding that irrelevant comments are made without any evidence.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] AA boss urges drivers to protect their fob in a metal box after his £55,000 Lexus was stolen - as drivers are warned HALF of cars are sitting ducks.
The boss of AA is encouraging motorists to keep their keyless car fobs inside a secure pouch, locked in a box and then placed inside a microwave after hackers stole his wife's £50,000 car.
Edmund King, one of Britain's leading motorist experts, said that thieves intercepted his wife Deidre's car key signal and were able to steal the keyless Lexus.
He now keeps his car fobs securely in a wired pouch that blocks the hacker's signal, locked inside a red metal box, and then places the box in a microwave at the very back of his house.

^^ Also just wrapping the keyfob in heavy tinfoil a couple times seems to work pretty well, too. Used a friend's industrial RF sniffer probe and my 1GHz spectrum scope (yeah, I know we're geeks) to test this method. Fobs usually operate in the 300-500 MHz range, FYI.
A little leakage right next to the wrapped fob (probably how we wrapped it), but nothing over 6 inches away.

There was this guy's Bentley which had a lockbox I needed to get into. The locksmith said there was a thumbprint recognition thingy in the stupid box. I went at it like a delinquent with a hammer, pliers, screwdriver, everything. No give. Enraged, we kidnapped the guy, beat him senseless and opened the shitty box with his thumb. All the while he was trying to tell us something but we didn't speak his Malayalam.
It was much later we realized the box had a keyhole too, concealed in the side. The locksmith had probably seen it earlier but didn't even mention it out of fear all the time. Hee hee hee...

My brother told me of a 'anti-theft' device he cobbled together for his Harley Shovelhead motorcycle (yes, it was a long time ago). He had a box covering the battery and there were four toggle switches that had to be flipped up or down in the right order to get any electricity. More of a deterrent because a really motivated thief would just drive up and toss the bike in a truck and leave...

...Interestingly, DOD has told DC rather bluntly that they were not getting any help from the Guard:
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rejected the request because the Department of Defense has "determined providing this support would negatively impact the readiness of the DCNG and have negative effects on the organization and members," the official said.
However, as Billy Mays used to say, "But wait, there's MORE!!!" :
The official said grant funding through FEMA's Emergency Food and Shelter Program is sufficient. "We understand SAMU First Response has received grant funding through FEMA's Emergency Food and Shelter Program and has indicated that sufficient EFSP funds exist at this point to provide migrant assistance."
That's about as direct a slap as you're gonna get without direct physical contact.
Mayor Bowser's response was, "Bowser told reporters on Friday that she wants to continue to work with the Pentagon to ensure political considerations "are not a part of their decision."
If Muriel Bowser is accusing the Biden Administration of 'political considerations' on this subject, it's possible that the Blue on Blue warfare is just getting started.
Mike
PS - And it's interesting that Her Honor's response to this - instead of calling on the residents of some of America's richest zip codes to meet their rhetoric and step up and help - is to call for guys with guns who come under her direct control.
Funny, that.

[NY Post OpEd] On paper, Ukraine’s David is running circles around Russia’s Goliath.
In the beginning of the war, Ukrainian defenders worshiped "St. Javelin," the US-supplied, shoulder-fired, tank-killing missile that turned hundreds of Russian tanks into smoldering hulks of roadside wreckage.
In the current phase of the war, it’s America’s HIMARS shoot-and-scoot precision rocket artillery system that’s helped Ukraine overcome Russia’s numerical advantage by taking out ammunition depots far behind the front lines, forcing Russian guns into hiding to avoid deadly accurate GPS-guided artillery fire.
In more than five months of brutal combat, the plucky Ukrainians repulsed the Russian attempt to capture the capital Kyiv and depose President Volodymyr Zelensky, inflicted morale-busting casualties on Russia’s largely conscription army, and fought the putative superpower to a virtual stalemate in the east, where Russian forces are paying heavily for every few meters they take.
The war is now at a critical inflection point, say outside experts, with only a few months of warm weather before the battle lines are frozen in place and pressure increases on Ukraine’s European allies who rely on Russian gas to keep their people from freezing.
"I don’t want to sound like a character from ’Game of Thrones’ but, yeah, winter is coming," said Britain’s top spymaster Richard Moore at the Aspen Security Forum last month.
To maintain the flow of military, economic, and political support, Zelensky needs a dramatic battlefield triumph to show the U.S. and the world the war is winnable.
"It’s important I think to the Ukrainians themselves that they demonstrate their ability to strike back, and I think that will be very important for their continuing high morale," said Moore. "I also think, to be honest, it will be an important reminder to the rest of Europe that this is a winnable campaign by the Ukrainians because we are about to go into a pretty tough winter."
Putin seems to be banking on a "winter strategy" that as European countries face higher prices to heat their homes, Western resolve will buckle, and Ukraine will be forced to cut a deal on Moscow’s terms.
But Russian losses have been staggering, with estimates of war dead ranging from 15,000 to 40,000."We continue to see Russia failing on the battlefield, paying a high price for very little gain, and suffering domestic failures at home," a senior military official told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. "When you look at the numbers of people that they have lost, it’s impossible to believe that they’re not having to figure out ways to replace them if they want to continue to go toe-to-toe with Ukrainians."
That said, the Russian president has a high pain threshold, especially because he’s not the one feeling the pain.

Wonder how many of Putin's 'volunteers' are themselves prepared for winter. Too many make the assumption that Russian are immune to the cold. Way back when the Russians and Chinese had a spat over the Amur river area, the 'Soviets' got a shock when numerous casualties arose from the cold weather. Those were not the old WW2 vets. They had to relearn 'how to' to stay alive. Given what we have witnessed so far, it looks like another learning process.
That was then. Subsequently 140 was claimed, no doubt later it will be even more. The question is how many landed on their fellow Gazans, and how many actually managed to do any damage in Israel. See here for links to all of today’s posts on Operation Breaking Dawn.

N. Korea made it clear it is willing to assist in Russia's war, news agency reported
This would include providing a vast fighting force - 100,000 soldiers - and builders to repair damage “If you feed them, they’re yours for as long as needed. We need to free up funds for more of Pudge’s our beloved Fearless Leader’s special cognac.”
In return, it said grain and energy would be supplied to Kim's stricken economy
Reacting, reserve colonel Igor Korotchenko told Russian state TV: 'We shouldn't be shy in accepting the hand extended to us by Kim Jong-un.'
Russia and North Korea have shared close ties dating back to 1948, when Soviet Union became first country to recognise DPRK. Putin and Kim last met in 2019
They would be deployed to the forces of the separatist pro-Putin Donetsk People's Republic [DPR] and Luhansk People's Republic [LPR], both of which Kim has recently recognised as independent countries.
'If North Korean volunteers with their artillery systems, wealth of experience with counter battery warfare and large calibre multiple launch rocket systems, made in North Korea, want to participate in the conflict, well let's give the green light to their volunteer impulse.'
He said: 'If North Korea expresses a desire to meet its international duty to fight against Ukrainian fascism, we should let them.' It was the 'sovereign right of the DPR and LPR to sign the relevant agreements,' he said.
Russia has repeatedly claimed Ukraine is a 'fascist' country as one of its many ways to attempt to justify Putin's brutal invasion, that has killed thousands of civilians and caused millions of people to flee their homes.
Korotchenko is known for his fierce pro-Putin rhetoric.
Russians should feel 'no shame' of its ambition of obliterating Ukraine as an independent state, he also said recently.
Such an objective was 'absolutely healthy', he said.
'It was said here that Russia is trying to wipe Ukraine off the geopolitical map of the world,' he said. 'It isn't quite that. We are wiping an anti-Russia project off the geopolitical map of the world…'
Ukraine had 'never existed' as a truly independent state in the past, he falsely claimed. 'It is an artificial 'formation' which was born thanks to the national policy conducted after 1917 by the Bolsheviks,' he said.
But now it had become 'a springboard for a strike against Russia'.
Its political elite 'have no right to exist from the point of national interests of our country'.
The West 'will not be able to influence the decisiveness of the leadership of our country and our people to make it so that such a threat from the territory now called Ukraine never exists.'

Close support already exists between these two especially after Pelosi's stunt. Close behind her stunt Volodymyr has asked China to have Russia back down. Western media in chronic damage control mode. Even Denmark now is drawn towards Russia and I have read the Swiss and Finland have buyers remorse. The weakness of the EU and USA is obvious to most nations of the world. Inflation in UK, USA and Germany is historic. The leadership of Western nations is the worst I have ever seen. Desperate hardly. He plays this game well. Kim's offer will be accepted. Look what he offers Putin. The unification of the Asian world only gets stronger. Diplomats and bureaucrats will not make the world safer or stronger. Ability, will and strength are the qualities needed now. China let Pelosi go back because they knew she would do more damage here. I expect Biden will do everything wrong as he is now(80,000 IRS agents; what a joke, nobody wants to work). My historic rant for the day.

Nothing says better a better evaluation than Go-No Go testing. Putin has found out the hard way and, unfortunately, for the grunts on the ground what the cost is. Can Kim afford to show the same level of military effectiveness that a real life (and death) demands. If they fail as the Russians have their threat posture evaporates. Who you going to send? Your palace guard or the ranks? Who will validate your military effectiveness best? Can you afford to lose your untested formations against people who've already been through Darwin's environment for many months. Remember your military organization follows the Soviet/Russian model not the Western.

#14 back in the 'old' Army, one form of testing whether troops retained the information they had received instruction in was to spend a morning or afternoon session running a route with stations/tables. Each station had evaluators and applicable gear/materials. The troop had to run to each station, present his sheet and then take a test. It could be computations, it could be equipment stripping and reassembly, it be setting up equipment that would then operate, and etc. It was timed both in execution of tasks but also the run overall. At each station you got a rating of Go (successful) or No-Go (unsuccessful). Failure in peacetime usually involved retraining classes usually at the price of the troop's 'free time', like Saturday or Sunday and a repeat of the test shortly there after. In war, it may well mean a body bag.

Follow up to this story from yesterday. See today also here, here, here, and here for tweets as events unfolded yesterday.
[BBC] At least 10 people have been killed by Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip, including a top commander of a Palestinian militant group. Local health officials said a young girl was among the dead with dozens of others wounded.
Israel's PM said the operation followed "an immediate threat" by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) after the arrest of one of its members early this week.
The PIJ fired more than 100 rockets into Israel "in an initial response". Most were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defence shield. Sirens were heard in a number of Israeli cities.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it then resumed strikes late on Friday, targeting militant positions.
In a televised address earlier in the day, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said "Israel carried out a precise counter-terror operation against an immediate threat".
The IDF said it struck sites linked to the PIJ. They include the high-rise Palestine Tower in Gaza City, hit in a loud explosion which left smoke pouring from the building. Four PIJ militants - including Tayseer Jabari - and a five-year-old girl were among those killed since the strikes started, local health officials say. They say another 55 people were injured.
An Israeli military spokesman said the IDF was "assuming about 15" militants had been killed.
Israel's Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked told Channel 12 News: "We don't know how this will play out... but this could take time... This could be a lengthy round [of conflict] and a hard one."
Speaking while on a visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran, PIJ secretary general Ziyad al-Nakhala said "we will respond forcefully to this aggression, and there will be a fight in which our people will win".
For a given definition of winning that would look like losing to anyone else.
"There are no red lines for this battle... and Tel Aviv will be under the rockets of the resistance."
Meanwhile, Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, said that armed groups were "united" in battle and would not keep silent.
On Monday night, Israel arrested Bassem Saadi, reported to be the head of PIJ in the West Bank. He was held in the Jenin area as part of an ongoing series of arrest operations after a wave of attacks by Israeli Arabs and Palestinians that left 17 Israelis and two Ukrainians dead. Two of the attackers came from the Jenin district.
[JPost] Israel takes initiative and launches widescale attack on northern Gaza in Operation Breaking Dawn. Iron Dome batteries deployed throughout Israel.
The IDF launched Operation Breaking Dawn against Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip on Friday evening, striking multiple targets belonging to the group and killed close to a dozen terrorist operatives including the head of the group in the northern part of the enclave. By late Friday night, over 100 rockets had been fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip.
Defense Minister Benny Gantz approved a draft call up order of up to 25,000 soldiers in reserve duty for operational purposes and the IDF began calling up reservists in the Southern Command, Air Defense Units, the Homefront Command and combat troops and officers.
"The goal of this operation is the elimination of a concrete threat against the citizens of Israel and the civilians living adjacent to the Gaza Strip," Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement.
Dozens of targets across the Gaza Strip were hit, with casualties including the head of the group’s northern command Tayseer al-Jabari.
Seems like the IDF info on retaliation was ...accurate
The rocket attacks were carried out hours after a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist was killed in a targeted Israeli Air Force airstrike in northern Gaza.
More than 100 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into southern and central Israel on Friday night, hours after the IDF struck multiple terrorist targets in Gaza, killing a top Islamic Jihad terrorist leader as well as additional operatives.
Sirens were heard across a number of key Israeli cities as more than 100 rockets were fired at Yavne, Be'er Yaakov, Ashdod and Gaza-border communities. Most of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system. The IDF was retaliating and striking additional targets said to be affiliated with Islamic Jihad terrorist infrastructure.
The targeting range was soon widened as rockets were fired toward the center of Israel including Rishon Lezion, Bat Yam and Holon.
An hour later, more rockets were fired at Sderot, Ibim and Nir Am.
No casualties were reported. Islamic Jihad took responsibility for the attacks.
[GEOTV] ISIS on Friday grabbed credit for a deadly blast in a minority residential area in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, the group said.
The Afghan police said at least eight people were killed and 18 maimed in the blast. ISIS said in a statement that 20 people were killed and injured in an attack launched in western Kabul.
That’s where the Shiite neighbourhoods are that ISIS-Afghanistan so like to attack.
"The explosion happened in a crowded place," said Khalid Zadran, the city's police front man.
Video shared on social media purportedly of the blast site showed men rushing to help the injured after the incident.
A senior Taliban ...Arabic for students... security official, who declined to be named, said primary investigations revealed that explosives were placed in a vegetable cart and the blast resulted in the wounding and killing of more than 50 people, including women and kiddies.
"There is a possibility that the corpse count will increase because most of the maimed people had critical wounds," he said.
ISIS has claimed recent attacks, mainly on the minority community.
The ISIS affiliate operating in Afghanistan since 2014 is seen as the country's most serious security challenge since the Taliban took control of the country in August last year.
The bomb exploded in a western district of the city where members of the minority Shi'ite Muslim community regularly meet. Islamic State, a Sunni Muslim militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group said on its Telegram channel.
A senior medical officer at a private hospital said at least eight people died and 22 were wounded.
No up-to-date census data exists, but estimates put the size of the Shi'ite community at between 10-20% of the population of 39 million, including Persian-speaking Tajiks and Pashtuns as well as Hazaras.
[IsraelTimes] Albanian government services were attacked after a group of Iranian dissidents attempted to hold a conference on Albanian soil in July
A cyberattack that temporarily shut down numerous Albanian government digital services and websites in mid-July was likely the work of pro-Iranian hackers seeking to disrupt an Iranian opposition group’s conference in Albania, a leading US cybersecurity firm said Thursday.
In a report, Mandiant expressed "moderate confidence" the attackers were acting in support of Tehran’s anti-dissident efforts based on several factors: The timing, the content of a social media channel used to claim responsibility, and similarities in software code used with malware long used to target Farsi and Arabic speakers.
The July 23-24 conference by the Iranian dissident group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq was in fact canceled following warnings from local authorities of a possible terrorist threat. Some 3,000 Iranian dissidents from the group, best known as MEK, live at Ashraf 3 camp in Manez, 30 kilometers (19 miles) west of Albania’s capital, Tirana.
The Free Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites.... World Summit was to have been held at the camp with US politicians among the invitees.
A group calling itself "HomeLand Justice" claimed credit for the cyberattack, which used ransomware to scramble data. Ransomware is best known for its use in for-profit criminal extortion but is being increasingly wielded for political ends, particularly by Iran.
The claim by "HomeLand Justice" came on a Telegram channel in which documents purported to be Albanian residence permits of MEK members were posted, along with video of the ransomware being activated. The channel alleged corruption in the Albanian government and used hashtags including #Manez.
"This activity poses an active threat to public and private organizations in other NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis.... member states," Mandiant said. "As negotiations surrounding the Iran nuclear deal continue to stall, this activity indicates Iran may feel less restraint in conducting cyber network attack operations going forward."
At the time, the Tirana government said the hackers’ method was identical with attacks last year in other NATO states, including Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Belgium.
The MEK began as a Marxist group opposing the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in Iran. It supported the 1979 Islamic Revolution, but soon had a falling out with Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and turned against his holy manal government, carrying out a series of liquidations and bombings in the Islamic Theocratic Republic.
The MEK later fled into neighboring Iraq, leading many in Iran to oppose the group. Although now largely based in Albania, the group claims to operate a network inside Iran.
[OffThePress] Almost every sea turtle born on the beaches of Florida in the past four years has been female, according to scientists.
The rise in female baby turtles comes as a result of intense heatwaves triggered by a growing climate crisis that is significantly warming up sands.
If a turtle’s eggs incubate below 27C (82F), the turtle hatchlings will be male, accoeding to the National Ocean Service. If the eggs incubate above 31C (89F), the hatchlings will be female. Temperatures that waver between the two extremes will result in a mix of male and female baby turtles.
