#1 We'll always have Paris São Tomé.

#2 I've never been on a cruise, but from what I hear they are sticklers for departure schedules.

#3 Mullah, that's one advantage of taking an excursion arranged by the ship. IIRC, they will wait those people. For a while, anyway.

#4 Ditto Richard. Getting on a boat with thousands of strangers? I don't even like sharing a cab.

#7 The American Express Card (and your cell phone and your passport) - don't leave home without it!

These guys were taking a risk with the private tour but the article also points out the captain of the ship could've taken them back on but refused. If that's true we'll be reading about a former captain of Norwegian Cruise Lines in a few weeks.

#8 ^ I dunno. "Refused to allow them to reboard" sounds like they had either been a problem already on board or some sort of red flag went up when they came back from their "private tour."

The captain may not be in any trouble with his employer at all.

#9 ^ happens to drunken me at airports all the time.

MM,

I'm thinking that they got there just in time to see the gangways going up, and their cries came to naught.

My wife has been on several cruises, and she noted that they make it VERY clear that if you miss sailing time, yer on your own.

#11 Several Smithsonian Channel 'Mighty Cruise Ship' shows have pointed out the schedules are really tight, including port docking windows, and putting the pedal to the metal to catch up can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

But the ships featured managed to wait 15-20 minutes for late tours. But if you make your own arrangements, you own the risks. You can always sue the local tour operator.... [snicker]

#12 ^ FWIW, there's a bunch of those episodes coming up at 4 PM today on that channel. I watch these and kinda sorta want to go on one, but not one of those monster 4,000 person floating keg party cruises. I think I'd be more inclined to go on an expedition type cruise - fewer frills, smaller boats going to Greenland / South Pole, etc.

#13 I always made it clear to every woman I was ever involved with - including my wife - that the first time we missed a flight because she was "running late" was the last time the plane tickets were bought on my dime.

Never missed a flight ever.
