You get it by drinking shitwater. That's how that Haiti outbreak happened: UN troops built a leaky latrine near a creek that the locals drank from.
The cholera bacteria dies easily and is susceptible to all of the usual sanitary measures: filtering, boiling, water purification tablets, etc.

#2 So true. If you can, filter the water through sari silk fabric to remove solids, then boil or disinfect in clear plastic bottles in the sun.
