#8 This NPR article is a bit more informative. The nitrogen is in sedimentary rock.

Nitrogen in the atmosphere is unavailable to plants, it's pretty inert. Nitrogen fixation is needed, which can be by bacteria or, in lesser amounts, from lightning.

#9 Yes, the plants get it from dirt...and fertilizer. This is why plants only grow in good dirt, instead of just everywhere...thinking more on it, haven't we always known this?
