The breakaway republics do this every spring -- express fears of a Ukrainian invasion of the republics -- and the Ukrainians play right into it, by expressing their fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Every spring.

The only difference this time is who is in change at the White House.

Mark my words. By March 2022, the same fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine will rise again to the top, Russia will deploy her divisions, wait 45 days and then go home.

Heh. It could be that both the bear and the dog are enjoying the game.
Riffing on badanov's comment, it appears there is something for everyone. To wit:
The respective armies roll out for a short annual training exercise.
The GoodGuys(tm) defend the Homeland from Outsiders.
Budgets are justified. Increases are demanded.
Speeches are made at the UN.
Peaceniks get to march and whinge.
The Press has something to lie and pontificate about.

As long as the casualties are minor and nothing important gets blown up, it's a win/win for everyone.
