It’s easy-peasy, my dear. The instructions that follow are for all knowledge levels, meaning from the level of abysmal ignorance I enjoyed when I first found Rantburg to someone who knows somewhat more than I do now. I suspect you’re closer to the latter than the former, in which case you can be amused by my disquisition.

When in Comment, look down to the bottom of the grey box that surrounds the comment area — it’s below the Submit button that we all know and love. You’ll see a long rectangle outlined in black that contains a row of letters and symbols. The first one is B for bold, then I for italics, U for underline, S for strike through... then bullet points, paragraph indent, text size decrease, text size increase... For each of those, you highlight the text you want to do something to, then click on the letter/icon to do it. In other words, first you need a bit of text, then you manipulate it.

The next one looks like a globe sitting on a pair of glasses or two links of a chain — if you look very closely indeed, you’ll even see that the globe has green continents and blue oceans. ;-) That’s the one Fred gave us for creating hot links or hyperlinks.

Like the previous icons, you need to start with a bit of text. If you do not start with a bit of text, as many of us discovered while climbing this particular learning curve, the link will not be visible to readers when your comment is published. A moderator will be able to go in through the backdoor to see it, but that doesn’t accomplish your purpose.

But actually, before you type your text, go to your interesting web page and copy the address, which some people call the URL. It’ll be found in the address box at the top of the web page, and starts with http://, https://, or just plain www. Then go to your comment, type a bit of text, highlight it, and click on the globe. Up will pop a little window that tells you to enter the URL. Before you do so, either highlight or delete the placeholding http://, and only then paste in your URL. If you don’t highlight or delete it, what you paste will be added after the placeholder, and your link won’t work. Then click OK, which will return you to your comment with hotlink in place. Stop a moment to look below the comment box to the right, where you will see a button labelled Preview. Clicking on that will give you a new tab that displays what your comment will look like, including your hotlinks. You can even click on the hotlinks to make sure they work as you intended, and see all your typos and other imperfections. Close that out, go back to your original comment, fix everything, and enjoy the happy feeling that your comment is exactly how you intended to be. :-)

Please note that Fred has set things up so that only two hotlinks are permitted per comment — more than that and the program will assume you are an evil spammer trying to ruin all that is good and holy, and will not accept your comment.
