Joshua Shifrinson is not a shill for Putin or anyone. He examined all the diplomatic correspondence and statements and concluded that yes, we broke our promise to Gorbachev-- and yes, the essence of a contract is a spoken promise, even if it's not formally codified in a written treaty.

We f--led the Russians. We humiliated them. It's a scar that will not heal until we, finally, forswear any further encroachment by NATO.

#4 ^ I agree somewhat. After the collapse of the Soviet Union we should have held a victory party and then dissolved NATO. A new alliance would have risen, but the old ways could have been declared dead and we could have engaged the Russians.

Instead, the Clintons wanted to humiliate them and expand NATO right up to Russia's border. A nation that had been invaded multiple times by Europe as was paranoid as hell about it happening again.

Well, now the US and the EU is weak and Russia knows it can push back now and there is little the west can do. Especially with the Russians supplying most of the natural gas to Europe. They have a twist on the west and they know it.

The Russians and Chinese both know it will take the US three months minimum to get an offensive force in place.

#7 Hey, Russia then went on to sign the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, which they were happy to sign and watch the Ukraine give up its nuclear weapons and then continuously violate for the last twenty years, talking about how much we've humiliated them for disarming their victims for them the whole time.

If we were led by intelligent and conscientious statesmen instead of poltroons and grifters, we'd end this stupid downward spiral and address the root issue: Ukraine can only and ever shall be a borderland that is next door to Russia's beating heart -- and therefore must be demilitarized and neutral. It cannot, should not, must never be part of a western or any other alliance.
