Iraq's Shi'ites, who comprise nearly two-thirds of the population, have no reason to subsidize the Sunni minority with revenues from oil wells located in their centers of ethnic preponderance. The simplest way to deal with resistance in the Sunni triangle is to break off the oil-rich Kurdish north and Shi'ite south, and let the Sunni center eat sand.

Washington loses nothing by promoting an independent Kurdistan, except for Turkey's dwindling goodwill.

#2 When trying to cash in Turkish goodwill before the war, it was found to be worth precisely squat. If the Kurds want independence, let 'em have it.

They don't have independence now, and what they've accomplished so far has proven that they can.

#6 The defeat of the Ottoman empire won't be complete until Turkey is broken up to give freedom to the Kurds, as well as a return of North Cyprus to its Greek population, and paying compensation for the Armenian genocide.
