#1 And what an amazing thing those men created when they pledged their lives and sacred honor, forthrightly affixing their signatures to a document that they knew amounted to a death sentence should they be captured. Ladies and gentlemen, fellow Rantburgers, fellow Americans and our allies, a toast to America. And may she have 230 more years!

#5 Back in 2000 when I was trying to run for Congress (10th House District, California) a potential backer asked me how I felt about the possibility of being assassinated should I be elected.

I turned to him and with a straight face and serious intent quoted this statement,

"I regret that I have but one life to give for my country."

Would that I had the courage of the men who founded this country and fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

#6 'Tis a great and wondrous good fortune to be born an American. I pray I have earned the privilege through my actions and my service. Would that all Americans appreciated their auspicious lot, for they have won life's lottery.

#10 Every day I wake up I'm grateful my ancestors got on those boats.

Thanks, all you great-great-great-(etc.) grandparents. Your coming to America all those years ago gave me the greatest gift there is besides life itself: I was born in America.

#14 One of the best retorts I ever had in an argument was to an Irish moonbat with whom I was arguing (the war, American neo-imperialism, etc). I reminded her that 'my ancestors came to this country to get away from your ancestors.'

She didn't like that much :-)

The eternal meaning of Independence Day

#16 It's been a rough Independence Day for DW and I. We're trying to recover from our daughter's wedding yesterday, and the hectic week beforehand. Yet as with every other Independence Day we've shared together (almost 40 of them), we are eternally glad we were born Americans. We've both lived in less fortunate nations, and many less free than ours. There is no greater place on Earth than the United States of America!

#17 Here, here, OP. May you and yours celebrate another 40 with us. Just imagine the 'burg 10 years from now, much less 40. Especially if Condi runs in '08! Happy 4th everyone, and I toast God for allowing me to live in such a free and prosperous land.
