But Zenster's point is a good one - when fishing for anything, keep a blade with which you can cut yourself free from any unexpected hangups.

Seriously, my boss lost a friend of Tobago, in his youth. The guy speared a sea turtle and had the line tied to his wrist. When the turtle dived in several hundred feet of water, he started to pinwheel and couldn't cut the the line. Never was seen again.
