#1 They are preparing to leave like the Soviet troops

Or...me.

#2 Hmmm...capitalizing on over $1 billion US aid per year, while enjoying a UN subsidized presense of a couple of million Afghan refugees, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan operates a secret, dirty war against US troops. Naw...I must be dreaming.

#3 A lovely bit of writing, Sneaze Shaiting3550. It is rather a nightmare, isn't it?

#4 whatever else the Pakis are doing, they aint running Stingers, etc over the border. Ya want to know how different the current situation is from what the Sovs faced, you need details on what the Sovs faced. Let me again recommend reading "Charlie Wilson's War" (soon to be a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts)

#5 So on the same day Hekmatyar and NutJob in Iran both say US defeated soon.

Any connection on the PR?

#6

Did the Afgan Mujuhadeen defeat the Soviet forces or was it the CIA and the makers of the Stinger Missles?

#7 It was a bit of both. However it was Ishamel Khan and Ahmad Shah Massoud (both would later fight the Taliban) who did nearly all the work. Hekmatyar spent much more time fighting Massoud (and having his ass handled) than the Soviets.

Also, IIUC, I'm not sure the soviet forces were really defeated, the operation just proved to costly in all senses for the rotting Urss.

#9 As I recall, when the Sovs went to choppers, they were really cutting down the mooj and winning. Stingers changed that. The CIA gave the Stingers to the ISI who gave them to the Afghans who took them back to the 'stan and used them to glorious effect. I don't recall if the ISI gave them mainly to the pushtuns (taliban) or Massood (Tajik/Uzbek) got some too. I think Massood got some because he was very effective.
