After eating the drug, alcohol, bus_derangement_sydrom, BS and chomkism laden flesh of a journalist the bear would have become crazy and gone in a murderous rampage.

I think a good compromise would be to shoot the environmentalists and animal rights activists and feed them to the polar bears.

the bear climbs up after you, it's a black bear

the bear shakes the tree until you fall out, it's a grizzly bear

the bear ignores you in favor of nearby bamboo, it's a panda bear

the bear climbs up with you, says "G'day mate", and offers you a fistful of eucalyptus leaves, it's a koala bear

the nearest tree is 100 miles to the south, it's a polar bear

Usually, when I'm in a panic, I run the other way. Maybe the bear was panicked about the possibility of lunch getting away.
