#6 I think the scientists are missing a bet, here. They could concoct the story that they were genetically engineering a shrew gene into a bacteria, to understand "what turns an ordinary shrew into a ravenous, carnivorous predator with poisonous saliva."

And the animal rights people were exposed to the bacteria when they broke in. So they should see a doctor immediately if suddenly they have an intense craving for raw meat, or if their saliva becomes poisonous to others.
