#5 That reminds me, does anyone know where I can find a good samurai sword?

If you are serious about that bit, I'd advise you to avoid both ebay and movies replicas, unless you want something cheap (and relatively expensive for what it is); for swords, I don't have as many bookmarks as for knives, I actually own a couple swords, but am really not focused on that... if you are looking for a production, industrial-made japanese sword (not very fond of those myself, by the way), I think you might want to go to
http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/swords/index.html

Customs would be :

Have you thought about kukris??? GREAT shortwords, actually the knives I've owned the longest (got my 1st as a pre-teen)

http://www.khukurihouseonline.com/
http://stores.shop.ebay.fr/NEPAL-KHUKURI-Knives-and-MORE__W0QQ_armrsZ1
http://www.gurkhas-kukris.com/

Or you could go to modern kukris like Cold Steel's ones; "best" nepalese kukris are IMHo the standard gurkha issue, or the WWII model. Other good "variants" on kukris would be the Kershaw Outcast (not a kukri per se, though), but the various bolos, machetes,... come in many, many variants, some very cheap.

You might want to go to ethnic swords

https://torablades.com/

Or historical replicas, industrial or custom

http://www.albion-swords.com/ (NB : my very favorite!!! Though, very pricey as well, am awaiting the collapse of the dollar to gorge myself, just before the eurozone collapses as well...)

http://www.museumreplicas.com/
http://www.arms2armor.com/
http://www.casiberia.com/
http://www.rittersteel.com/index.html
http://www.reliks.com/

Etc, etc... plus many, many custom swords with no particular roots, look around a bit, those tend to be even more expensive, though.

#9 The sky is the limit if you want a spectacular sword. I knew a top sword maker who gave me an hour lecture on metallurgy.

Some tidbits were that samurai swords were actually slightly over-folded, so modern versions have a "less is more" technique.

The secret of Damascus steel was that they had inadvertently stumbled on a way to concentrate and integrate carbon buckyballs into their steel, but it was a random event, with only one out of several swords having enough to make them superior steel.

Advanced alloys and ceramics will give a blade better than steel in one way, but not all ways. Ceramics can be insanely sharp, but very brittle, for example. Some alloys can "heal" from injuries, but cannot develop a good edge.

There are some efforts to make carbon nanotube and diamond hybrid blades, that would be strong, flexible, and have an edge just a few molecules thick, called a "bee sting" blade, the size of an epee, but able to slice through most things easily.

#10 What's wrong with using a 50-cal on a meerkat? If you go into a fair fight, you're doing something wrong. ;-)
