#3 The Indian military Monday cleared for production a fighter jet that will be the first plane flown by its national air force that was designed and built at home.

The HT-2 was a fairly simple piston-engine trainer but the HF-24 was a supersonic fighter design. The design team was led by none other than Kurt Tank of Focke-Wulf fame, who moved to India in the 50s and worked for HAL until 1967. Performance was disappointing, mostly because the imported engines it was supposed to use were never fully developed. It flew well enough though and saw action in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
There have been many other Indian designed and built aircraft in military service over the years.
