#1 Yeah - sadly because it confirms the "US military occupies Egypt" meme.

#2 Yes, but the cultural influence our military has had on the Egyptian military is probably why they haven't been hosing the crowd.

Though they would prefer not to, the Egyptian military have enough respect from the public to maintain order in the absence of government, until new elections can be called.

#3 One area of concern (mentioned in the article) are reports of Egyptian Army units moving into the Sinai inviolation of the peace treaty. This create a problrem very quickly.

#4 reports of Egyptian Army units moving into the Sinai in violation of the peace treaty.

There are several different reports that I've seen about events in the Sinai. I have no idea if they are rumours or straight reports.

1. Hamas is moving out of the Gaza Strip on orders from the Muslim Brotherhood to open another front against the government, and Egyptian troops are moving to drive them back behind the security wall.

2. Bedouins are taking territory. (I don't understand that one. It's not as though anyone would let them keep it.)

3. Unlike the fairly peaceful demonstrations in the main cities of Egypt-on-the-Nile, the demonstrations in the cities of the Sinai are violent, armed by weapons captured from the police stations.

#7 The majority of US troops in Egypt are either there to train the Egyptian army, or there to monitor the Sinai. We've had troops there since 1973, so it's not something new. I doubt the total numbers exceed 800, including support personnel.

#8 Occasionally, the US and Egyptian Air Forces hold joint maneuvers and training sessions too.
