#1 Yeah, who was it said that the Turks would get a footprint on Cyprus?

#2 This is a grand gesture. Now Israel needs brought into the deal. USA should broker a deal to mend things a bit. Some stability must be the end result.Look how things are going now. Do we want more tension in this part of the world. The gas has always been there. New wealth, then work a deal.Turkey desperately needs this. Should this gesture be refused then things will get much worse. Money doesn't buy happiness but it can help. Again watch Russia, they are drooling over this.

#3  Do we want more tension in this part of the world

It doesn't matter what we want, Dale. Turkey wants it. Paying this Danegeld will quickly not keep them from demanding more until the Ottoman empire is reconstituted with them in charge.

#4 There may actually be reasons in International Law why N Cyprus is entitled to some of the $.

When Cyprus became independent in 1960 or so, it got, as a unit, the oceananic resource zone. The zone may not have been revised per the split.

#6 The Turks need to back off or become a footnote in history. Their neo-Ottoman approach will make the Israelis more likely to spend the money from the natural gas fields on military equipment with which to defend the fields. And Turkey cannot take the fields and hold them, at best they can do some damage and then the Bosporus Straits are closed indefinitely, crippling the Turkish economy.
