#4 Actually, the Congo has never been a breadbasket, even under Leopold. It's always been about stealing everything that wasn't tied down, and a few ~~people~~things that were. It's a fabulously wealthy country as far as resources are concerned, and one very, very, VERY hard to manage. Half the population or more still live a hunter/gatherer lifestyle.
