#3 AlanC, the Kurds are Aryan/Iranian, whereas other Syrians and other Iraqis are Arab Semites.

Kurds = Ancient Medes from the Bible. Kurd culture extends back to the Bronze Age. IIRC emerging after the fall of the Babylonian and Assyrian empires. Jews, Persians, Kurds - have all been around for about the same amount of time - a history major may take issue with the accuracy of the statement - but as a generality, it rings true.
