#2 Since people aren't taught real history anymore, most people don't recall (and those who do are dying by the trainload everyday) that we bombed the living day lights out of the Germans and Japanese before we tried to rebuild them. Those generations remember what war was about and the long process of rebuild also had an effect on subsequent generations. So much for 'kinder gentler' wars.
