#2 Public universities were originally A&Ms - agricultural and mechanical. In other words, practical education for skills the society depended upon (and still do for the fundamentals food and energy). They've long dispensed with that justification for their existence. They should go back to A&Ms - (practical) application and medical.

The other problem has been societal extension of childhood. You protect children, but adults are expected to deal with the reality of life and its challenges. As Instaprof alludes to, too many 'children' are in college. If they can't deal with it, they should not be there.

#4 I think the word you are thinking of is snowflakes. Our collages and universities are filled with delicate snowflakes who were carried around by their parents, and school teachers so much that they would melt if they ever had to actually touch the ground....
