#8 Though she was running as a Democrat, Rao wrote in December column for The Huffington Post that she had broken up with the party after noticing "that the love has been one-sided."

That might explain her election loss. Just guessing but saying you want no part of the party you hope to elect you is probably a pretty bad strategy.
