#6 Romney is first and foremost a moneyfiddler, a financial engineer.

His career as a money guy will be hurt if he is seen as in any way sympathetic to Trump by those business counterparties whom he critically depends on for deal flow, exits, and financing.

Those counterparties - Wall Streeters and bank execs as well as consumer company CEOs - are now falling into line with The Resistance and signaling to the Dems, the media and various ~~blackmail~~ "activists" that they are woke, that they oppose racism 'n' sexism ''n' cis-hetero-normative-genderism.

Romney is simply trying to preserve his fortune and his business. Nothing to do with politics.

#7 All explanations in this comment thread are valid, but I would add that Romney's still butthurt that Trump did what he couldn't.

Add ego to the toxic stew of Ruling Class imperatives and you get Willard and his ilk.

BTW, the most famous character in fiction named "Willard" was a rat. Just sayin'.
