#5 Since yesterday Bavaria is in lock down (the German federal system leaves the decision to the länder. Rest of Germany to follow (we should have done so a week or two earlier).

Munich is quiet, so quiet. A walk to catch some fresh air is allowed but only alone or with members of your household, and you're supposed to not venture far.

We organized working from home two weeks ago, so things run smoothly. Of course we expect losses but we'll manage for quite a while.

Supermarkets are well stocked and quiet. No "hamsterkauf" (I think that German word is popular now). Even toilet paper is available, but you're not supposed to take more than one pack.

We stock up on fine foods to keep us happy- Public services work (post office, banks, trash collection).

The Bavarian Prime Minister, Markus Söder, is getting lots of accolades for doing the right thing earlier than Merkel. And he communicates the strict measures perfectly. I'm much less impressed by the German health minister.

Markus Söder might become the next chancellor of Germany.

There were some problems in a Bavarian camp for refugees. They were settled within hours after local police mentioned unused planes at Munich airport ready to take unsatisfied guests back to Turkey.

On a positive note. Quite a few supermarket cashiers are from Syria and do their job dutifully.

#9 Three countries still reporting, as of today, that deaths are increasing faster, by percentage, than infections. For more than 3 weeks now almost every day has had a bigger percentage increase in deaths than infections for each of these countries:

Iran

today- infections up about 1000 to a total of about 21.6k; deaths up about 130 to a total of about 1700.

Spain

today- infections up about 2500 to a total of about 28.6k; deaths up about 370 to a total of about 1750

Italy

today- infections up about 5500 to a total of about 59k; deaths up about 650 to a total of about 5500

In Iran both infections and deaths are probably under reported. In Spain and Italy there may actually be an over reporting of deaths as there are many people with multiple serious conditions. However, there is also likely to be under reporting of infections in all three countries as testing is restricted by the availability of the testing infrastructure.

The U.S. has 32000 cases and 400 deaths. Those numbers have been doubling every 3 days. Run the numbers forward 3 weeks. 7 doublings. That's 4 million cases and 50000 deaths by mid April.

This had better start slowing down soon.

Yea verily.

I'll take the opposite side of that bet. We won't be anywhere close to 50k deaths by mid-April.
