My brother shared an anecdote a friend told him about trying, and failing (!), to convince a local he was training to use a torsion wrench on a jet engine fitting (he would use a normal wrench if he wasn't watched). Often peasant farmer to trained mechanic is a step too far.

Your brother’s friend framed it wrong, magpie. Mr. Wife got the workers at one of his Egyptian chemical suppliers to wear their safety shoes by telling them that the chemical caused impotence and was absorbed through the feet. He was not, however, able to think of a reason that would persuade them to cover the holes in the mezzanine floor with something stronger than cardboard...
