These were Real Men cheating Murphy at every stage of the game.

They had to have nerves (Cahonas) of Titanium just it get into a piece of equipment with a 60% to 80 % historical failure rate.

To sum up his way of test piloting...
"If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing."
