China's power arrays 'malfunction' and accidentally destroy a major American city. Oopsie!
America retaliates by launching anti-satellite weapons (yeah, unlikely. but work with me here)
Huge debris field in geosynchronous orbit takes down the communication and observation satellites American military relies on. Mission accomplished - at least from the Chinese side.
