1st degree, earned in 1986, paid off in 1995.
2nd degree, earned in 1995, paid off in 2001.

All while being TAXED at 50+ % (city/county/state/Fed and misc hidden) and still supporting a wife and 3 kids.

The LSD's sure have crapped on a lot of honest, hardworking wage-earning voters. I guess they are HOPING TO BUY enough votes for MID-TERMS.

#4 My father paid for all of my education back in the 1960s. So, following his excellent example, I paid for all of my children's education inthe early 2000s.

Guess that makes me a chump in the eyes of the current elite; but it makes me a responsible father and family man in the eyes of my wife and children. And I'll take that any day.

#8 ^ The problem with mortgaging the future to pay for the present is that the future doesn't get a vote. It doesn't even get asked. And the present being bought on credit isn't going to be worth it to the future, societal contribution wise.

#11 Biden has made the problem worse. At the same time "just pay it off" doesn't fix anything either. The kid with a $200k gender studies degree will never pay off that loan. He shouldn't have taken it, the school should not have charged so much, the loan should not have been offered, etc. But it did and the government guaranteed that loan. We were all on the hook the day it was made. It will never be paid back, and eventually that kid will die and we'll all still be on the hook. Unless we die first I guess. And all the while we are still making these loans and printing these degrees every single day.

#14 My parents worked their way through college, as did Mr. Wife and I, the trailing daughters started saving from their earnings as pre-teens in addition to parental savings, and both of my fosterlings who went worked and got scholarships...

But Mr. Wife and I also got took out small loans ($7,000 between us, as I recall). When we went to the bank to set up repayment, the loan officer tried to talk us into defaulting because, he said, the federal government would cover it so the bank would be fine — we had to fight him to get the paperwork set up. This was back in 1981, so the rot goes back long before the Obama federalization of college loan sourcing and the current Biden executive order.

Get the federal government out of student loans, starting with FAFSA applications for the parents of all students, even those who don’t want loans or merit scholarships

#15 Biden announced $10,000 in forgiveness for borrowers earning less than $125,000 and $20,000 for those who had Pell Grants

I keep seeing Pell Grants mentioned in this scheme. Pell Grants are grants, not loans. You do not need to repay a grant. No idea what is going on with that.

#20 I keep seeing Pell Grants mentioned in this scheme. Pell Grants are grants, not loans. You do not need to repay a grant. No idea what is going on with that.

The current wording is that if you received a Pell Grant ('exceptional' financial needs based), they'll write off $20G in your loan debt. Grant itself doesn't have to be repaid, just that since you were eligible for a Pell, you'll get a larger reduction of your existing student loan debt.

Notice I said 'existing'. If you've paid it off already, you're SOL.

#23 I've seen and heard about abuses of the student loan system. One kid bought a duplex with the money, another used the money to buy a new Audi, another racked up several hundred thousand getting two Phds, one here and one abroad. The last I heard, this student was paying the minimum amount each year. She won't live long enough to ever pay back her debt.
