#1 In 1971 Anwar Sadat, Nasser's successor, released jailed Muslim Brothers expecting to deploy them to crush opposition within the government, especially the strong Communist faction. The release of hardened Islamists resulted in the emergence of radical extremist organizations. They included the Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya with its spiritual leader Shaykh Abd al-Rahman (issued a fatwa in 1979 declaring President Anwar Sadat an infidel), and Al-Takfir wa al-Hijra led by Shukri Mustafa.
