#3 Apparently using one's helmet as a rescue scoop is verboten.

A couple reasons. Modern helmets are not good for digging as they have very blunt and wide edges, unlike the old steel pots.

Second, you have active artillery exploding around you. Helmets are designed exactly for this type of action and will defeat artillery splinters. Not healthy to take off your brain bucket when those things are flying around.

#4 In artillery school, we do a "bunker" shoot where we walk the rounds in to sub-Danger Close (<50 meters). Sometimes the rounds land on the bunker...

Anywho - we would go out to conduct a crater analysis and the frag was still hot and so jagged. I think they also wanted us to feel the effects of rounds landing on you and see the frag.
