#2 Ah, TW, you know why my mother's family didn't go back to Ukraine after the war? Because they were afraid of being killed by Ukrainians - as lots of other returning Jews were.

p.s. What's Vlad is trying to do with this, and with his "Zelensky is not really a Jew", is chill Russian hyper-"patriots" who make the inference (quite logical for their kind): Zelenski is Jew, therefore all the Jews are enemies of Russia therefore "Kill the Jews, save Russia".

Now, I'm not saying that Vlad is a humanitarian, or (G*d forbid) philosemitic. Just very smart & pragmatic.

My father was completely uninterested in meeting Latvian emigrés in America, Grom. Buncha antisemites, he said. He was polite when Mr. Wife shared the photos he’d taken on a business trip to Riga in 1994, but not even slightly curious about what had become of his hometown.

Returning Jews were killed in a number of countries — Poland comes to mind — and harassed in even more. My German half-Jewish cousin, Rheinhilde, whose mother survived Auschwitz while Hilde was allowed to withdraw from society for the duration, was still being harassed by the clerks at the Hildesheim town hall when we visited in the 1990s for having not had the grace to die quietly during the war instead of insisting that she did too have the same right as her neighbours to rebuild her home and live in it, instead of letting her valuable property go to those who ought to have had it all along.

A useful insight, Grom. Russia does have a strong patriot/white supremacist movement in the culture, tied to white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups around the world— which until current events included Ukraine.
