'This is cold-blooded murder.' Why did the Ukrainian Armed Forces shoot down a plane with its fighters?

#1 Mysterious Russian plane crash raises more questions than answers

#2 "Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reported, citing its sources in the Ukrainian military, that the plane was carrying S-300 missiles. This information was also provided to Ukrinform by its military sources."

#4 Yeah, that was a pretty big plane for a bunch of POWs.

A flying Lusitania?

#5 Russia reports that a total of 74 were on the plane.

Il-76 typically has a crew of 6-7, so that would lead to having only 2-3 guards for 65 prisoners.

#6 A curious case. We have:
1) a big heavy transport plane carrying a relatively small number of people.
2) a low guard to prisoner ratio
3) someone shot it down

Speculation:
1) perhaps the plane was needed elsewhere for another job, perhaps the plane was carrying other cargo.
2) Generally, not a good idea. But if they were headed for a prisoner exchange, there is less incentive overpower the guards.
3) It is fun to debate which side is more eviler, but stupidity also fits - maybe Private Pyle forgot to turn the switch to WEAPONS TIGHT. Note that this applies to either side.

#7 Deputy Kartapolov: Ukraine was warned about the flight plan of the Il-76 15 minutes before the departure of the Il-76.

That is, the Ukrainian Armed Forces knew the flight plan, knew that they had their own people on board, knew that they would be exchanged, but still decided to shoot down the plane.

How can you negotiate with these people?

#8 A dubious claim. If that were true, why all that secrecy? Invite foreign journalists and let them see the evidence.

#9 Could be social media lies, telegram lies, but I read apparent first hand sources from other returned UKR POWs that were flown on Il-76s.

#10 Well, it comes down to (1) you either say all enemy aircraft are subject to shoot-down, or (2) your enemy puts 2-3 pow's on every transport, so you won't fire on it.
I'd go with option 1.
