Is China Targeting The American Food Supply?

THE BIG PICTURE: THE CCP IS INTERESTED IN U.S. FOOD PRODUCTION.
The largest pork producer in the U.S. is owned by China. Smithfield Foods, based in Virginia, is the largest producer of pork in the U.S. IN 2013, a CCP-linked company in China purchased Smithfield Foods for $7.1 billion.
As of 2024, China owned approximately 384,000 acres of farmland in the U.S.
What about more recent actions? Is there a connection?
2023: THE SECRET CHINESE LAB IN FRESNO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
In March of 2023, California law enforcement officials conducted a search of a secret laboratory run by Chinese nationals in Fresno County, California. The unlicensed laboratory was located in a nondescript warehouse in Reedley, California.
When law enforcement officials searched the lab, they found over 700 mice. The mice had been genetically altered to carry disease.
In May of 2023, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, a CDC team entered the lab to conduct an investigation. The CDC team found over 20 infectious disease agents in the lab, Those agents included:
-HIV
-E. coli samples
-Tuberculosis
-Dengue virus samples, and
-Heliobacter pylori samples.
-The lab also contained malaria parasites.
The illegal lab was run by Jia Bei Zhu, a Chinese national. Mr. Zhu had several aliases including Jiabei “Jesse” Zhu, Qiang He and David He. Mr. Zhu was an executive at several Chinese businesses, including the Henan Investment Group Company Limited, a Chinese company linked to the Chinese military.
Notably, Mr. Zhu was an executive at al Chinese cattle company. Mr. Zhu was the Chairman of “Aide Modern Cattle Industry (China),” a Chinese company that owns other Chinese cattle companies.
In November of 2023, a federal grand jury indicted Mr. Zhu for making false statements to federal authorities. In August of 2024, the Department of Justice added charges related to conspiracy and wire fraud.
At the time of his arrest, Mr. Zhu lived in Clovis, California. Clovis is in Fresno County, California Fresno County is the San Joaquin Valley, among the richest farmlands in the America.
As of August 2024, Mr. Zhu was held in federal custody. He has filed a lawsuit against Fresno County.
The Georgia Record was not able to determine when Mr. Zhu’s trial will be held.
JULY 2024: FUNGUS SAMPLES SMUGGLED INTO THE DETROIT AIRPORT.
In July of 2024, Mr. Yunqing Liu, a Chinese national, was arrested for attempting to smuggle a hazardous fungus into the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Samples of the fungus were sealed in small plastic bags that were concealed in Mr. Liu’s luggage. Mr. Liu admitted that he was bringing the fungus to his girlfriend, Yunqing Jian. Ms. Jian is a Chinese citizen who had been a researcher at the University of Michigan.
On June 3, 2025, the Department of Justice charged Ms. Jian and Mr. Liu with smuggling Fusarium graminearum fungus into the U.S. F. graminearum can cause grain crops and corn yields to drop.
F. graninearum also produces a mycotoxins. The mycotoxins can cause illness, and sometimes death, in humans or livestock that eat grains affected by the fungus.
Mr. Liu is at-large. He is reportedly in China.
JUNE 2025: A CHINESE NATIONAL SENT ROUNDWORMS INTO THE U.S.
On June 8, 2025, a Chinese national was arrested for smuggling biologic material into the U.S. On June 9, Jeremy F. Gorgon, Jr, the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, announced that Ms. Chengxuan Han was charged with smuggling “biological materials related to roundworms” into the U.S.
Roundworms are a class of parasites (nematodes) that can affect grazing cattle, especially calves. Roundworms on grasses can be ingested by grazing cattle. Once ingested, the larvae mature to adulthood inside the cow.
Some roundworm larvae can cause damage to the digestive tract of cattle. Some infect the lungs. Roundworm infection can cause diarrhea and failure to gain weight in young cattle. Death is possible.
A preliminary hearing in Ms. Han’s case is currently scheduled for June 30.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Is there a connection? Is there a Chinese operation?
There are steps that the U.S. and California governments can take. Here are few steps that the U.S. government can be take immediately.
The U.S. State Department could demand that China extradite Mr. Liu, who is reportedly in China.
The U.S. Department of Justice could expedite Mr. Zhu’s trial.
The Department of Justice could aggressively prosecute the Han case. The June 30 hearing should be kept open to the public and the media, as should all of the proceedings in the Han case.
The Congress and the Department of Agriculture could investigate how many Chinese nationals are attending U.S. veterinary schools. A source has told The Georgia Record that it is not known how many Chinese nationals are taking seats at the approximately 4,000 slots at American veterinary schools in the U.S.
There are steps that the California government can take. Here they are:
California could counter-sue Mr. Zhu. California and Fresno County could add China and Chinese companies as co-defendants.
California and Fresno County could seek to expedite discovery.
California has two veterinary schools. California could investigate how many Chinese nationals are attending its two veterinary schools.
Municipalities in California could immediately start looking for other illegal labs in California. The Fresno lab might not have been the only one.
