Turkey, Iran may be on collision course in Iraq — analysts

and Iran, analysts Vali Golmohammadi and Hamidreza Azizi said on Saturday.
The two countries are vying for stronger positions in neighbouring Iraq amidst a bid for greater influence as Turkey increases its military presence in the country’s north with the aim of taking on the threat it says is posed by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the pair wrote for Washington-based National Interest think tank.
A diplomatic crisis erupted between Ankara and Tehran earlier this month when Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad, Iraj Masjedi, rejected Ottoman Turkish military interventions in Iraq, referring to Turkey’s increasing aerial and ground cross-border operations into the country targeting the PKK, an gang that has been at war for Kurdish self rule in Turkey for almost four decades.
The statement prompted both countries to summon their respective ambassadors for a brow beating over a series of statements accusing the other of disrespecting Iraq’s borders. Turkey’s own ambassador to Iraq said over Twitter that Iran

While it may appear that the countries have a different approach with Kurdish krazed killers, the pair wrote, the real issue has to do with Iran’s perceived decline in influence in Iraq.
"Widespread public protests in Iraq in late 2019 against Iran’s role was the first major sign of this downward spiral and the liquidation of Iran’s Quds Force Commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani
 dealt the most severe blow to Tehran’s influence,’’ the pair wrote.
This may have prompted Ottoman Turkish leaders to conclude the time was "ripe for rolling back Iranian influence and restoring what they perceive as Turkey’s historical role in Iraq,’’ they added, noting that Ankara does not appear to be seeking confrontation with Iran in Iraq, but rather " to exploit the country’s current power vacuum to strengthen its strategic leverage in the region.’’
The current trajectory involves the "risk of an unwanted clash between the two sides,’’ the analysts said, pointing to the example of war-torn Syria, where an "unrelenting Iranian and Ottoman Turkish approaches toward their actual or perceived zones of influence could easily lead to an escalation, should one of the parties decide to challenge the other’s interests. ’’
