17 killed, 82 wounded in shootings during extended Fourth of July weekend in Chicago

[ChicagoSunTimes] Of those shot, 24 were in mass shootings in Greater Grand Crossing, the Near West Side, Douglas and Austin.

Seventeen people have been killed and at least 83 wounded during shootings in Chicago over the extended Fourth of July weekend.

By the end of Friday, the tally of shootings — six people shot Thursday and 62 shot Friday, 12 killed over both days — surpassed the numbers for last year’s entire holiday weekend. Last year, 11 people were killed and 62 wounded over the holiday weekend, which stretched over four days, July 1-4.

This year’s holiday violence includes four mass shootings. In all, 24 people were shot, four fatally, in the mass attacks.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement the Chicago Police Department would deploy officers whose days off for the holiday weekend were previously canceled, aiming “to maximize presence and ensure prompt incident response.”

“We are devastated by the recent violence that has left our city in a state of grief, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and communities impacted by these recent events,” Johnson’s office said in a statement.

#4 Chicago mayor blames disinvestment, Republicans after violent weekend, Johnson also blamed the Republican party.
“You have an entire political party that is protecting a lobbyist entity to make sure that illegal guns can flow through the streets,” Johnson said.
The mayor said the GOP should be brought up on charges. Chicago has not had a Republican mayor since William Hale Thompson left office in 1931.
