Half of Somali delegation absconds during international labour summit in Geneva

[ShabelleMedia] More than half of a Somali government delegation attending the International Labour Conference in Geneva has reportedly absconded, sources familiar with the matter told Radio Shabelle, raising concerns about the credibility of the state and the integrity of its official representation abroad.
The 23-member delegation was led by Somalia’s Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Yusuf Mohammed Aden. According to informed sources, at least 10 delegates quietly left their hotels and disappeared, allegedly seeking asylum in various European countries instead of returning to Somalia.
The sources claim the absconding delegates had each paid thousands of dollars to secure European visas in advance. They were included in the official delegation list to obtain legitimate travel documentation under the guise of participating in the conference.
The incident has stirred outrage among many Somalis, who view it as a severe blow to the image of the Somali state on the international stage. Political analysts say the episode reflects a broader failure in vetting and accountability mechanisms within the government.
"This is not an isolated case," one source told Radio Shabelle. "Similar incidents have occurred in the past, where delegates sent to international forums vanished and never returned, often seeking refugee status."
Despite repeated cases, the Somali government has yet to implement strict preventive measures to curb such incidents, raising further criticism over its commitment to institutional reform and diplomatic credibility.
Observers say the latest scandal is likely to intensify calls for Somalia to overhaul its process for selecting and monitoring foreign delegations, with demands for greater scrutiny and adherence to professional standards aligned with national interests.
